A Glenham man is determined to bring whoever shot and killed one of his cows to justice.

Casey Perman said he discovered one of his cows dead Friday from a gunshot straight through its lungs, leading him to believe that it was a deliberate act.

“This cow was an old cow, so it’s not a big loss, but in this herd there’s some worth $5,000 to $10,000,” Perman said.

The shooter could have easily chosen one of Perman’s more valuable Herefords.

“It happened on Friday afternoon sometime,” he aid. “My uncle was in that pasture later in the morning and he saw that cow and she was alive.”

The cow, along with the rest of Perman’s cattle, was in a pasture along state Highway 1804. He said that makes it more difficult to narrow down possible suspects.

Casey and his father, Campbell County Sheriff Lacey Perman, were able to extract a bullet from the cow, but found no other evidence.

“We found the bullet, but we didn’t find anything like a bullet casing or shells,” Casey Perman said. “The bullet was sent off to forensics.”

Without any solid leads, he took to social media where he posted a picture and description of the incident along with an offer of a $1,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to an arrest.

“Enough is enough. We will find you and you will pay,” Perman wrote in the Facebook post.

After only two days, the post had more than 51,000 shares, resulted in a few leads and sparked Perman to increase his reward to $2,000.

“I think we’re getting kind of close, and we’ve got a few people checking things,” he said. “It’s not hunters or anything of the sort, it’s some locals.”

The post has also sparked other area livestock owners who have found animals dead from gunshot wounds to speak out, Perman said.

“One has had a horse shot, and one has had a cow shot,” he said of others in both Campbell and Walworth counties.

Perman believes solving his case will reveal more about the other animal shooting cases.

People who have information about animal shootings in the area should call the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office at 605-955-3355.
