On Thursday afternoon Flames GM Brad Treliving took care of the final bit of housekeeping as he signed forward Micheal Ferland to a two-year contract extension.

Ferland was a restricted free agent and it was well documented that he was looking to be rewarded
That obviously wasn't the case as when all was said and done Ferland was given an average of $825,000 per season.

I think Treliving was smart to wait this out as he surely continued to gain leverage while the days passed.

Treliving had said that Ferland wouldn't be welcome in camp if he didn't have a contract and Ferland's absence would hurt himself much more than the team. Ferland is trying to establish himself as an every day player and missing camp and falling behind the 8-ball wouldn't serve him well when the team already has an abundance of forwards.

Ferland surely realized this and with camp less than a week away he was running out of time to settle.

Now the Flames have Ferland, who played pretty well in a depth role last season, signed for two years at just $825,000 per season.

In today's NHL it is of the utmost importance to surround your stars with cheap depth players. Treliving did that here.
