Halloween Roundup: Where to get your scare on

CHIP CHANDLER
Connor McLean prowls 6th Street Massacre before performing in Lone Star Ballet's "Wolf." Get details on that and more in our Halloween Roundup.

The things that go bump in the night have two more weekends to scare you silly.

Halloween is still days away, but Amarillo is howling with fun. Here's a roundup of celebrations, mostly for grown-ups, going on through Oct. 31.

Boo at the Zoo

Amarillo Zoo brings back its family-friendly Halloween celebration, set to run today through Sunday. Activities include trick-or-treating with costumed animal characters, natural oddities like the world's largest species of toad, pumpkin "stomp and chomp" activities with some of the zoo's animals, costume contests, music from Andy Chase, games and more. Attendees also can purchase paintings created by giant cockroaches, rats and other zoo animals.

Boo at the Zoo, 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Amarillo Zoo, 2401 Dumas Dr. Admission $5. 806-381-7911 or www.amarillozoo.org.

"Santa Muerte: A Celebration of Life, Death and Womanhood"

Artist Karly McCutchan opens her first solo show, an exploration of death that she says is actually life-affirming. "I don't believe that death is the end. My artwork celebrates that - that death is not the end. My work explores the roles and stages of womanhood, including death," McCutchan said.

"Santa Muerte: A Celebration of Life, Death and Womanhood," opening reception 7 to 9 p.m. Friday; hangs through Nov. 13, Chalice Abbey Center for Spirituality & the Arts:, 2717 Stanley St., Suite A. 806-576-2480 or www.chaliceabbey.org.

"Wolf"

Lone Star Ballet's season opener has its dancers jeteing on the wild side.

Inspired by werewolf legends and the 1941 film "The Wolf Man," "Wolf: From Twilight to Dawn" hits the stage at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, 500 S. Buchanan St. For more details, see related story.

Some familiar costumed faces will be roaming Historic Route 66 in a Saturday afternoon event. "War of the Worlds" Listening Party

The 1938 radio broadcast by Orson Welles allegedly sparked a national panic. What will a free listening party of the historic event do in Amarillo? It probably won't spawn any riots, but the gallery is downtown-adjacent, so who knows these days?

"War of the Worlds" Listening Party, 6:30 p.m. Oct. 31, Gallery on 7th, 513 S.W. Seventh Ave. Free; reservations required by Oct. 30. 806-681-0821 or 806-437-9728.

"This is a party for the people." He'll spin alongside DJ Saga, DJ Gemini and others.
