2 teens indicted in slaying of 14-year-old girl at Birmingham park

Antonio King, 17, and Jason Wade, 19, are charged with murder and two counts of assault.

Two teens have now been indicted in the shooting death of a 14-year-old Birmingham girl during a group fight that started on Facebook.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Antonio King, 17, and Jason Wade, 19, in September, according to court records made public today. Both were indicted on charges of murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

King and Wade are charged in the February death of Kiera'Onna "Keke" Rice, a freshman at Fairfield High Preparatory School. Rice went to Washington Park that Friday afternoon to settle a score that had been brewing since sixth grade, according to her friends and family. The shooting happened at 5:48 p.m. Keke was pronounced dead at Princeton Baptist Medical Center at 6:12 p.m. after friends rushed her there by private vehicle.

Friends said it wasn't long after the fight started that it spiraled out of control. "It didn't go as planned,'' said Destiny Senior, Keke's 15-year-old cousin. First someone pulled out, and deployed, a Taser stun gun. Next there was gunfire. And then there was chaos Keke was one of three people wounded.

"Everybody took off running,'' said friend Arreonia Westry, 14. "I turned around because I knew Keke was behind me, and she was on the ground." Friends and authorities said after being shot, Keke was run over by a car in the panic that followed the shooting. "She was reaching for her cousin, and she just kept saying, 'my legs, my legs.'''

Someone scooped up Keke and threw her over his shoulder. They put her into a car and rushed her to Princeton Baptist Medical Center where she died.

King and Wade have also been indicted on a first-degree assault charge in the wounding of Jawaune Damonte Morris, and second-degree assault in the wounding of Quintez Antonio Williams, both of whom were shot during the incident. They both recovered.

Authorities said both suspects, neither of whom was in school prior to the shooting, have previously been shot themselves. King and Wade have been in the Jefferson County Jail since the shooting. King's bond is set at $300,000; Wade's at $150,000 according to jail records. According to the murder indictment, the suspects "recklessly engaged in conduct which manifested extreme indifference to human life and grave risk of death."

Court records don't list any pending court hearings.
