on inviting yourself to someone’s home

Sometimes I invite myself over to other people’s homes.
It has a lot of awkward potential, as I’m sure you can imagine.

But there’s something about being in someone’s home that helps you get to know them better, you know? It’s like you see them in their place surrounded by their stuff and doing what they’re comfortable doing and instantly you know them better. I love it.

I’m not suggesting you just bomb in on someone you barely know and stay for 4 hours. Or even 1 hour, really.

But sometimes it’s nice to drop by. And bring food.

I’ve discovered that bringing food helps alleviate any symptoms of awkwardness.

Of course, the food doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Goodness, it doesn’t even have to be homemade. Let’s be honest – sometimes it’s better if it’s not homemade, right? It’s okay if baking is not in your skill set. We’ve all ruined our fair share of recipes.

I’ve mentioned before how I love to keep frozen cookie dough on hand for myself last-minute treats. But we’re currently depleted in this area because we took 2 bags of frozen cookie balls on vacation and ate them allllll.

So over the weekend, Anna Grace and I hit up Publix {see her cute shopping pose here} for some frozen goodness in the form of cheesecake. I got the Sara Lee® New York Style Cheesecake because it was the biggest one available. I have no idea what the difference is between New York Style Cheesecake and regular old Cheesecake, but I know it was 30 oz as opposed to 17 oz and I was all, “WE NEED THE BIGGEST ONE.”

We perused the syrup section and noticed this lovely sign:

It says: Receive a FREE 17-24oz Hershey’s® Syrup when you buy any ONE (1) Sara Lee® Frozen Dessert item now thru 10/09/15 while supplies last.

After I got home, I texted a friend and invited myself over. She’s a very kind person and said yes.
But I think the mention of cheesecake might have softened the blow of my brazen request.

Oh yeah, a friend to enjoy it with is always a major plus.

So to all you who are building relationships with other peeps (that would be all of us), next time you want to build a bridge with someone, try inviting them over to your home. And if you’ve already done that? Maybe it’s time to drop on over to their home. But always – always – bring food.

  1. Love this idea and that dessert…YUM! Its definitely important to not ALWAYS meet at a coffee shop…but to get cozy in friend’s domain to really get to know them 🙂

  2. thanks, Brittany!
totally agree! besides, I can’t normally watch a movie or wear my PJs to a coffee shop, but I CAN to my friend’s home! 😉

  3. And now I want cheesecake… and chocolate! But need to do a bit of cleaning in my home in case of some late night, uninvited visitors first! 😉 Love those kinds of friends that we can invite in or invite ourselves over with no worries of what our house looks like, what we are wearing, or if the food we come bearing was homemade or found in the aisles of Publix – THOSE friends are the best!

  4. Lol! Totally agree!
