A Jacksonville officer shot a dog police say had attacked a child and another person Monday afternoon in the 2900 block of Meadowbrook Boulevard - on the Southside near Beach and Kernan boulevards.

The loose dogs had also entered a residence and attacked another dog, a news release from the Sheriff's Office said.

An officer was attacked while trying to control one of the dogs, then tried to fend it off with his baton, police said. The officer then shot the dog once. That dog ran back to his residence and was secured by his owner, police said. The injured animal is expected to survive.

Police say all who were attacked by the dogs suffered minor injuries. No information was available on how many dogs were involved in the attacks or the breed of the dogs.
