Coming up for Children and Families
We will have this month's Open Gym THIS FRIDAY, November 20th. Come on out for a potluck at 5.30 and join in the fun!
This Sunday is our Celtic children and youth-led Sunday! We will tell a Godly Play story for our sermon and once again welcome Annie Brown, our awesome fiddle player from last time! We are also celebrating PWRDF Sunday, where we give thanks for and support the work of the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund in our world.
After church this Sunday John will be giving a presentation on his time in England with the Compass Rose Society and the Archbishop of Canterbury! Be sure to come out and hear some good stories.
Clare and her fellow curate and friend the Rev'd Alex Wilson have launched a brand new project: Two Priests and a Pod, a podcast about spiritual disciplines that will include the Daily Office, interviews, and all kinds of cool stuff. The podcast will launch November 22nd at 5pm. Join us on SoundCloud here, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter (@2priestsandapod) and tune in for our first episode: "Slow Down - Construction Zone: Advent Spiritual Practices" with special guest the Rev'd Dr. Marilyn Hames!
Mark your calendars! Cancel that cruise! St. Philip's needs your time and talents at the annual Christmas Fair. Parishioners of all ages play a role in this community fair!
Continuity: We welcome new and returning volunteers with open arms. Join in!
Community: Meet new people, share your talents, and enjoy fellowship.
Cash: Raise funds to use in programs and outreach.
We need silent auction donations, lottery prizes, attic treasures, crafts, baking, woodwork, pottery, baking, knitting, preserves, gifts, and more baking.
This year the fair has two co-covenors, thanks to Marian Boyle's offer to help. Contact Debbie Matheson with offers and bright ideas (debbiematheson@shaw.ca) or contact Marian Boyle to volunteer at the fair (marianboyle@shaw.ca) Let Marian know if you'd like to return, to try something new, or to "retire."
Advent 1 is coming up so soon!!!
We are trying something new in the season of Advent at St. Philip's. We will be bringing the altar forward and worshiping "in the round," with some of the pews arranged around it rather than entirely in rows. We will return to our regular configuration by December 20th. Let this time be a time for your family to reflect on the mystery of the incarnation of God among us.
For church school on November 29th we will work on a series of themed Advent banners. Bring all of your creativity! If you don't make it out or if you want to do more, we will continue our work after church on December 6th. Marilyn will be leading this time of quiet contemplation and creativity.
Advent Wreaths: Every year in Advent your whole church family gets together to make Advent wreaths! The whole church family will gather for this fun activity after church on November 29th, the first Sunday in Advent! Be sure to come and join in the fun!
On December 2nd at 7.30pm your St. Philip's family will hold a parish meeting about refugees. A number of parishioners have asked how St. Philip's will support the arrival of refugees in Canada over the next few weeks. We have looked at several different options and would like to invite anyone interested in being part of this conversation to this meeting. Join us if you are curious or if you would like to learn more about the possibilities.
December 6th at 4pm we will hold our Advent Carol Service! Please come out to hear some of the beautiful music this season has to offer.
This year's Christmas services are as follows:
Christmas Eve
4pm Eucharist
This Eucharist is small and intimate, with harp music and carols, to get us ready for the Christmas Pageant.
5pm Christmas Pageant
This is St. Philip's most well-attended service of the year! Please come out to hear the story of the birth of Jesus, the joy of the shepherds, and the journey of the three kings, and to sing "Silent Night" by candlelight outside! There are lots of carols and singing! If you'd like to participate, please let Clare know!
7.30pm Christmas Eve Eucharist
This is our traditional Christmas Eve service, with carols, choir, organ, and Eucharist. It is a joyful celebration that hearkens back to our Anglican roots.
10pm Candlelight Eucharist
We have changed our Midnight Mass time to 10pm. This will be a service for you to enjoy the mystery of Christmas and the contemplative beauty of a smaller and more intimate setting.
Christmas Morning
9am Christmas Day Eucharist
After the chaos of Christmas Eve, Christmas morning is a balm at St. Philip's. We have gentle music and a lovely Eucharist. Start your day with your church family and enjoy the quiet in the midst of celebration.
Coming Up for Youth
It may seem like it's far ahead, but it's closer than you think! Advent starts in a couple of weeks. Are you interested in taking part in the Christmas Pageant as a reader? Please let Clare know!
Spiritual Ecology Fellowship: A youth fellowship is growing around the Spiritual Ecology movement, an interfaith movement which acknowledges the spiritual dimensions of environmental issues. "Central to Spiritual Ecology is an understanding of the interdependence and living unity of the ecosystem. Real sustainability refers to the sustainability of the whole ecosystem rather than our energy-intensive, consumer-driven culture."
