The 'backwards brain bicycle' looks like a normal bike but has one simple mechanical change: when you turn the handlebars left, the front wheel goes right and vice versa.

You might think that if you knew this before you got on the wheeled vehicle you’d be able to conquer the technique to ride it - but you won’t be able to.

Just check out this incredible demonstration by Destin Sandlin, creator of massively popular YouTube channel SmarterEveryDay.

Sandlin shows time and time again how people assume they can take up the challenge to ride the bike over a short distance - and they always fail.

“It’s always the same. People think they’re going to try some trick or they’re just going to power through it. It doesn't work. Your brain cannot handle this.”

Our brains, says Sandlin, are in such a rut from learning how to ride a bike at a young age that it’s extremely difficult for us to change the way we use one.

“This bike revealed a very deep truth to me. I had the knowledge of how to ride a bike but I did not have the understanding,” he says.

After EIGHT MONTHS of practice, Sandlin could eventually ride the bike. “It was like I could feel some kind of pathway in my brain that was now unlocked.”

Intriguingly his five-year-old son, who had been riding a bike for three years, was able to pick up the new mechanics within just two weeks.

“It’s clear from this experiment that children have a much more plastic brain than adults,” he concludes.
