Coach’s Corner: Dustin Byfuglien takes no prisoners

Ron & Don talk about the Blue Jays, Brad Marchand’s stellar play with Bruins, OHL playoffs and Canadian teams not making the playoffs.

The most talked-about play of the last week was when Winnipeg Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien ran over Ottawa Senators forward Mark Stone like a Mack truck.

The massive open-ice hit happened Wednesday but it was still on the mind of Don Cherry during Coach’s Corner Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada.

“He takes no prisoners,” Cherry said.

Cherry pointed out that Stone’s teammate Chris Neil, one of the veteran enforcers in the league, went over to talk to Byfuglien after the hit. Cherry figured Neil was asking Byfuglien why he’s still throwing hits like that at this point of the season since neither the Jets nor Sens are playoff bound.

Stone continues to recover from a chest injury he sustained on the play.

Cherry also mentioned a play from March 20 where Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks was rocked by Minnesota Wild defenceman Mathew Dumba while skating through the neutral zone.

The message? Keep your head up!

“Kids, how many times have I said, ‘Look who’s on the ice. Be prepared.’”
