Danish woman gets lost hiking, sets off 3-hour search

Authorities conducted a search of Stephens State Park after a hiker dialed 911 to report she was lost Sunday afternoon.

MOUNT OLIVE - A 46-year-old woman was found safe late Sunday afternoon after she got lost hiking in Stephens State Park earlier in the day, authorities said.

The search began shortly after 1:30 p.m., when Mount Olive police received a 911 call from the hiker, who reported that she was unable to find her way out of the 805-acre park, Mount Olive Police Sgt. Mike Cordileone said.

Officers from Mount Olive police, along with members of the Budd Lake Fire Department, Budd Lake First Aid Squad, Morris County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit and New Jersey State Park Police, responded to the area and set up a unified command center, he said.

After three hours of scouring the park, one of the teams found the woman "who was tired and thirsty, but otherwise ok," the sergeant said.

Following an evaluation by EMTs, the woman, who was visiting the United States from Denmark, was brought back to her car in the park's lot, he said.

"Mount Olive Emergency Services continually strive to provide the residents of Mount Olive with quality services. Combined with the assistance of the Morris County Sheriff's K-9 and NJ State Park Police, this is just another example of that great teamwork," Cordileone said.

Stephens State Park is located in western Morris County, just north of Hackettstown along the Musconetcong River.
