On Tuesday Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CESC) officially introduced CalgaryNEXT to the city.

CalgaryNEXT is a $900 million project that would see new arenas built for both the Calgary Stampeders and Calgary Flames.

The Flames sent out a press release on behalf of CalgaryNEXT that explains the proposal in much more detail.

CalgaryNEXT includes a Multisport Fieldhouse Stadium with state-of-the-art sports and world-class athletic training facilities. It will be the anchor for a thriving field sport community and combined with the arena event centre, will be the catalyst for new economic growth on the western edge of Calgary’s urban core. The Multisport Fieldhouse Stadium will have a seating capacity of 30,000 for football games and other events.

CalgaryNEXT also includes an innovatively designed arena event centre - a place that will host both professional and amateur ice and sporting events. It will also increase capacity for concerts and conferences. The event centre will be a community gathering place for sports and events, as well as unique public spaces and a variety of food and beverage options.

The arena event centre will have seating in the range of 19,000 – 20,000 fans for hockey and lacrosse games, cultural events, and community service.

CalgaryNEXT will be designed to host world class national and international events that wouldn’t otherwise be in Calgary: Premier events, including soccer, track & field, cultural festivals and concerts; bringing significant economic benefits to the city.

Not mentioned in the release was how CSEC plans on funding the $900 million project.

The proposed plan would see team ownership pitch in $200 million while the rest would come from taxpayers ($200 million), ticket tax ($250 million) and community revitalization levy ($240), according to CalgaryNEXT.com.

The near billion dollar project seems to have been greeted with mixed emotions - including from Naheed Nenshi, the Mayor of Calgary - so it will be interesting to see how all this plays out.
