Riley is a broken woman. Desperately trying to hold her life together and start over after leaving a nine year marriage to a drug addicted ex-husband and his vile treatment of her. Her 3yr old is slow to start speaking and running through one speech therapist after another, that’s how she meets Liam, the last therapist in a long list.

Liam and Riley quickly become attracted to each other. Liam is the perfect guy. Strong, patient and protective. He’s a sexy rock star by night and a speech therapist by day. He’s survived a world of travesties all his own and it’s through these experiences that he can help Riley and her son move on.

It’s when her ex comes back with a vengeance and demands to see his son, or else, that this book really became a page turner for me.

Riley was an awesome character. I loved her snarky and quirky personality and I respected her for not relying on others to fix her but rather taking the steps she needed to in order to move on herself. The secondary characters of her twin sister and mother were both funny and charming.

I loved the author’s writing style and the ways in which she incorporated Riley’s past and present. It was a relatively quick and fast paced read with a good amount of drama and angst without it feeling overly or needlessly so. Ultimately this is a feel-good story about moving on with your life, depending on the bond of family, learning to love yourself as well as finding love with another again.

I recieved an advanced copy of this book for my honest review. The 5 Stages of Riley Winters is a debut novel from RD Berg. Let me tell you for a first time writer, she knocked this one out the park. The story grabbed me from the prologue, and kept me intrigued throughout the entire book. The story of Riley Winters and how she crawls her way through the 5 stages of grief is told in such a way that you feel as if you are living the story yourself. Her words gripped me in such a way that at times I had to put down the book and think about what I just read. This book will take you on a journey and you better hold on tight for the ride.

How rude of me to put this book off for so long? What was I even thinking? RD Berg should slap me. Wow.

“You can leave a toxic situation, but the scars that are left behind or almost harder to deal with.”

And RD is absolutely RIGHT with that line right there.

The main character, Riley was fantastic. As a woman who has been in her position, and with a child, RD Berg depicted it perfectly. The guilt, the grief, the way you shut down and fight for your child. The author just did a fantastic job at making you understand what being that woman can seem like.

I just wanna say though, I’m not a fan of pet names so there were one too many “babes” and “babies” in this book for me. I could have done without that.

But moving onto more good, HOW ABOUT THAT COVER!? OH MY GOD. It’s beautiful.

While you have deep topics of domestic violence and drug use, the author still have us some swoon worthy romance packed into a character named Liam. And boy was he something. He truly was the perfect fit for this family, which I’m also a softie for.

RD Berg did a phenomenal job at constructing her first novel. I’m blown away by the thoughts she provoked and the strength she showed within Riley. It was inspirational and moving, a must read for every one!

5 Stages of Riley Winters is an endearing debut novel from RD Berg that address the realities of divorce and abuse while still giving the reader a sweet romance to swoon over. This story has it all: drama, healing, hope, love, and contentment. The sappy yet sweet romance is balanced by the realities that come with the end of an abusive relationship. As you read this story, you walk through the different stages of grief with Riley and watch her find hope for a future that is bright.

This story has quite a bit going on but Berg does a good job of covering all her bases. Liam and Riley fall head over heels fast, a sort of insta love that I usually get frustrated with, but I let it slide because they are perfect for each other. The acceleration of their relationship allows them to jump right into the mess of Riley’s life and start to deal with what is happening. I enjoyed reading this story from Riley’s POV. She left an abusive relationship and her inner workings are vital to what is happening around her. Each emotion she deals with is justified and watching her work through those inner demons is sad but tinged with a hope for healing. Her suffering has a realistic feel to it. She is hurting and some days are good while others are bad. She makes progress and then backslides into the pit. She fights for what she wants and learns to embrace the pain. It becomes a part of who she is but she denies that pain the control over her life.

Liam is the perfect fit for this family. He is understanding and kind. He is all in from the very beginning and learns to take his cue from Riley, never pushing too hard. They make sense together. Their chemistry is smoldering and their connection is sweet. The way he interacts with River, Riley’s son, is heartwarming. He is attentive and kind, everything they both need. He is protective and made of the best qualities you long to read of in a book boyfriend.

This book balances a romance with a tragedy quite well. What starts as an instant love romance turns into something more as the hardships come. They go from 0 to 60 in the love story but when it evens out, it is a tale of healing, unconditional love, and fight. I loved how this story is focused on Riley and her journey to peace. There are moments when the hurt and abuse seems to win, but it is a war that she rages constantly with the help of her family and friends. I loved seeing her triumph in the little things and learn to embrace every part of herself. 5 Stages of Riley Winters is a sweet story of love and a journey of healing, one that will make you smile and cheer on the main characters to find hope and a new start in the end.

This is one of those stories that had all the prerequisite elements to being a great book. In theory the characters and storyline along with certain dramatic incidents should have produced an exciting and sensual read but unfortunately what I found was a fairly unconvincing plot along with weak and unengaging characters that tended to use over flowery and saccharine sweet dialogue, which in turn just seemed to highlight how schmaltzy and cheesy everything was. I love romance, I live for romance but in The Five stages of Riley Winters it was overkill and at times I felt like I was reading a nineteen-eighties Mills and Book with Fabio on the front cover. It is as though she used every known cliche in the romance genre and amplified it.
There were parts of this book I just could not get into, others I liked well enough and others that just didn’t make sense. The timeline of events is much too quick. Our hero Liam is a speech therapist by day and rock star by night, who after only one day of knowing our heroine Riley, decides it is great professional practise to join his new client Riley’s son and her on a family outing. The relationship is harried and never develops fully, there was a ton of potential to prove how strong and resilient Riley was after suffering at the hands of her ex-husband but she came across as rather whiney and unrealistic. Unfortunately it wasn’t just the main characters that felt a little stuffy. The relationship between Riley and her sister didn’t gel either, it felt forced rather than fun and loving. Liam was an okay hero. He had all the right words to say and at times was very sweet but he too often seemed too good to be true.

‘He removes his hand from my hair and places both of his hands in his pockets. “Riley, I’m sorry if I am freaking you out, but I have never met anyone like you.”
“What do you mean, like me?” I ask confused.
“No, no, nothing bad, Riley. It’s just that your eyes tell me that you have a story that is hidden there, but your smile says otherwise. You’re just a pretty little mystery.”’

The Five Stages of Riley Winters was an okay read but I wouldn’t say it had a lasting effect on me. It will be one of those books that you will either love or dislike depending on your preferences but for me it just didn’t work out. I can see definite potential in the author however, and I would read another book she writes but I feel that time and experience would better benefit here.

I am going to keep this review short and sweet...

I was intrigued by the book's blurb. I thought for sure this was a book I was going to fall in love with. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Now before you sigh... This isn't a bad book. It actually is a good book, but it wasn't a book that I fell in love with like I had hoped.

The story overall is a good one. I just couldn't focus on it. It moved slow for me. Although the writing is good, it just seemed to be missing something for me.

I was hoping to need some emotional therapy after reading this. However, being the tough cookie I am, I didn't. I am very saddened over this. This story has emotional wreck written all over it. I just didn't receive it like I hoped. However, many others seem to have. It just may be me.

Overall, this is a well written book that I think many will like if not love. Don't necessarily count this book out just because it didn't do it for me. Not every book is for everyone!

Not good. I love the cover and the blurb but the love ends there. I almost didn't finish this book and this is surprising because I always finish a book. This book however really tried my patience. I commend anyone who has the courage and creativity to write a book and publish it but this book was just bad.

I just finished the 5 Stages of Riley Winters and I liked it! Riley has not had it good in the relationship department. Her ex, Aaron is a world class douche that treated her like crap. She finally leaves him but she is dealing with depression. She lies to her family to hide in her home, the only thing that gives her light is her son, River. River has a speech delay so she has had multiple therapists try to help him to no avail, they decides to send a guy instead. Boy, does Liam make the cut! He's hot but very supportive of River, he knows what he is doing. There is an instant attraction between them two but Aaron being the douche canoe he is, doesnt want her to have any good in her life. Will she be able to stand up to him to get what she wants?

I liked the story. The story had me from the get go. I thought that the characters were developed good and you could feel their vulnerability. I liked the secondary characters too. Dylan and Annie, they were a hoot! Would love to see more of them! What kinda of got redundant to me what the lovie dovie stuff. I totally get it, I really honestly do, Riley has never had that but I am not a fan where the I love you's are continually said, just was a little irritating, plus it changed my way of thinking about Liam. I loved his whole bad boy imagine, therapist by day, rock start by night but then it changed for me, into a more softer character when I liked him the way he was. My only other complaint is Riley. I thought she was weak in areas where she should have shined. I wanted her to be the woman that I could sense she wanted to be, but at times fell a little flat.

Other than that I did really care about the story. River was a great rendition that had a strong voice for being so little. I love happy ending when it comes to these types of stories and I was wondering if we were going to get it here. Glad to see that I wasn't disappointed!!

"You have to become a seamstress and learn how to stitch together the pieces of your heart until it's whole again."

As soon as I read the synopsis of this book I simply had to read it. Why? Single mother with a cute wee boy, a hot speech therapist and the possibility of love. That's how easy it is to entice me. You just know there is going to be a whole lot of cuteness involved and I cannot resist it.

Riley is a single mother to 3 year old River. He has a serious issue with his speech development and this is how Liam Bowers come into their lives. He is freaking gorgeous and Riley practically drools at the sight of him. He has an amazing connection with little River and the bond between them only strengthens with time.
Liam is very interested in getting to know Riley in a non-professional way and she cannot resist his sweet charm. There are so many cute moments between this couple as well as a huge pile of heart warming scenes between Liam and River, so adorable!

I must remind you however that this story is called the 'five stages' for a reason and that is because Riley is still dealing with her break up/divorce from River's father. Unfortunately for Riley, her ex is a nasty, vindictive type and continually pops into her life, leaving her exhausted from the stress of dealing with his awful antics on her own. She is very stubborn and independent. If she would just open up to those who care about her, she could get the support she really needs. Riley is going to have to make some tough decisions and some of them are going to really hurt.

This was a really sweet story, intertwined with an undercurrent of suspense.

When I read this synopsis I jumped on the tour. I felt it would be a book easy to connect to because marriage , divorce , kids is such a reality and never easy. I have not been through the struggles Riley has with her marriage BUT drug addiction and abuse have been in my life by way of family members and exes so I have watched it rip through and destroy. I fell for River right from the start , OMG that little boy was special and I was so invested in his growth. Liam was probably my favorite character in the story. Riley was just as I assumed she would be, making dumb choices and although she wanted the right thing she had a hard time pushing through her own walls to get them. The one thing I would have loved , as weird as it may seem , would have been some POV by way of Aaron. You get the story from Riley but to lead up to the major event it would have been nice to have snippets from his mind to alert us to just how intense he was. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time regardless due to his threats and just wondering where and when we would meet up with him. This book had fear , devastation , hope , love , HOTNESS and a very sweet and happy ending. It was a quick read and I enjoyed Liam and River so much !! Riley was plagued with an impossible situation and luckily for her a knight in shining armor rode in by way of River's speech therapist and brought her back to life. Liam not only saved Riley and River but he saved himself by finally finding love again. He was amazing and to boot he plays guitar and sings !! I just cannot say enough about him. LIAM LIAM LIAM LIAM
Definitely worth the read and I am interested to see what else this author has to offer.

I liked the book. I was not drawn in from the very beginning but I stuck with the book and enjoyed pieces of it.

Riley, bless her heart, has had it rough lately. Her ex-husband, Aaron is a jerk who treated her like crap. After finally coming to terms with the situation and realizing what needs to be done, she leaves him but falls into a depression. She does not want to be around people and often avoids her family.

The only thing that keeps her going is her son three year old son, River. River is a sweet little boy but has a speech delay. Each week, River sees a speech therapists, but he does not like them. After the last one quit, the agency decides to try again. This time a male is sent to work with River. Liam not only gets through to River and has him talking more than the others, but there is also an attraction between he and Riley. Will Riley be able to open up and live again?

I did enjoy the story but there were parts that seemed redundant. I understand why it was written that way, Riley needed it, she had never had it with her ex Aaron, and now she did with Liam. When these two finally had sex, I honestly skimmed it. I usually don't, but it was not a big part of this book for me. Like I said, I enjoyed this book but it was one I could put down and come back to after a few days. For that reason I will rate it 3.5

5 Stages of Riley Winters is an powerful tale of a woman trying to pull herself out of the hell that has become her life.
It's highly emotional and at times I found myself wanting to smack some sense into Riley.
Liam makes up for her occasional stupidity.
He's truly amazing. Patient, kind, honest, trustworthy, an did I mention patient? That's something he really needed to be to get through to Riley, the road she traveled was a rough one and I understood her hesitancy where Liam was concerned but he had more than proved himself to her and yet she still kept the most important information to herself. I understand being afraid and pushing Liam away to protect him seemed like a half decent idea initially but River was threatened as well and he should have been her priority. Keeping him safe meant not hiding what she was going through. Had she reported it sooner River may not have gone through what he did towards the end of the book.
This is also one of the few books where I felt relieved when a character died, in this case it was the best for the story and remaining characters.
This was my first RD Berg book and I'm thoroughly impressed and look forward to reading more soon.

Without sounding like Julie Andrews "Let me start at the very beginning ...." The cover art is amazing !! Not only is it artistic but it captures the essence of the book, the cover alone will leave you breathless !

Riley is an emotional mess and this woman brought me to my knees more than one occasion ! I think precious little River is her reason for survival well him and Liam. Liam is patient, kind and gentle. ok let's be honest he has the patience of a saint!

Liam is a speech therapist by day but damn me his moonlighting job is hot!

Riley's path crossed with Liam's when River has to go for therapy sessions . The chemistry between them is almost instantaneous and Liam has some life experience of his own and I think this added to his patience and understanding.

The douche ex also makes his appearance and he's like a bad rash but he's dangerous on so many levels ,the wheel turns and karma isn't blind.....I'll leave it at that....

Riley makes mistakes in her journey ,hell she's only human after all but I did get upset on occasion especially where River was concerned . But , having said that I have the world of respect for her . She is a survivor .

This is a story of survival ,healing ,family, love and finding peace .

A 5 star read !

Before I even opened the book to read it I fell in love with this cover. This had to be one of the most beautiful and well done covers on a book I have ever seen. I felt like it really reflects the different sides of Riley.

From the moment I started this book I could not put it down. Riley's character was so relatable. I absolutely adored her son and the relationship she had with him. It felt very real. I understood her journey and all the stages that she went through when going through a major life change.

The relationship between her and Liam was amazing to witness as he helped her heal and move forward with her life.

This book made me feel so many different feelings and believe me when say I felt them all from the sweet moments between her and her son, to the romantic moments between her and Liam, and the angst of it all!

It is hard to believe that this is the author's debut novel. There is nothing better for me than when a book can make me care so deeply for the characters and their stories and the author did just that. I never wanted to put it down and did not want to see it to end. I look forward to reading hopefully more books by this new author!

A Great Debut!
This is R.D. Berg's debut novel and let me tell you that she is definitely going to be one to watch. She did a totally awesome job with this one. I was sucked in right from the prologue and held fast turning page after page after page. I have to admit though that what drew me to this book in the first place is the awesome cover, I mean how could you see that and the title and not be intrigued? We are pulled along with Riley, right there with her as she finds her way through the 5 stages of grief, and it is a totally emotional journey. I absolutely loved Liam, and River. I won't say too much more except that I am hoping that Dylan and Annie get their own story, they were just great. I will be watching out for more from this talented author. I was generously given a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review.

I absolutely LOVED this book and must say that Liam has been added to my list of book boyfriends....SIGH!!!

The story of Riley is one that hit home for me. The struggles she faced and needed to overcome were heartfelt and I completely imagined myself in her shoes. She has a wicked past, yet through her strength and love from those around her she is able to see the light.

Liam....O.M.G!!! He was my knight in shining armor. Having been dealt a difficult past of his own, he finds that there is more to life and strives to overcome his demons by helping others. Ohhhh and he is in a BAND.....yowza!!!

Not only were the main characters well written, the various others who played a large role were on point. I enjoyed this story from start to finish and found a deep connection to each character.

Well done RD Berg :)

Wow. This is the first book I have read by the author and I have to say I am so impressed. Not only was the story amazing, it flowed brilliantly and I was in love with the whole process of the five stages.
Riley is broken. To say the least. I love that she finally takes control of her life even though there are some aspects she needed a quick boot in the bum for!! Enter Liam. He is perfect is so many ways yet flawed. These two together was pure magic. I loved the way music was intertwined in with the story and how it helps both of them.
The ending had me on my toes which to me is a great thing as the book has kept my attention throughout the whole thing! If you want a book that is different and unique, I would highly recommend this one as it is very much outside the box!!

I received advanced copy from United Indie Book Blog for my honest review. Riley went through so much heartbreak but will she find love to able to save herself from the darkness hanging over her head. Sometimes the person you thought you new isn't the one who you love. But always wondering how they became that way so much hatreds and sadness that you trying to fight to not lose your relationship also realizing that you losing you self in the process. Liam is so understanding and have different scenario of his life but will he able to keep both of their hearts unbroken. Love the author work and can't wait to read more future books.

Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The five stages of grief we feel right along with Riley.
I absolutely loved this story. My heart broke for Riley and for River until Liam came along. Liam is perfection and he was there when Riley needed him the most. He's the reason she made this through the things she went through almost unscathed. And she went through a lot. I wanted to hold her myself because my heart was breaking right along with hers. She pulled through though. She came out stronger and happier when she got through The 5 Stages of Riley Winters.

This book is about change in life and how it can be hard and rewarding but how it takes 5 stages to get to where you want or need to be. Riley is moving on from her ex but this is hard for her and she has to deal with these five stages of moving on. The brightside to this darkness is her son and the gorgeous Liam but there are many surprises through the book which will keep you on your toes. A very enjoyable read that pulls at your heart strings and gets you truly invested in the characters. Also as a final note that cover, it is totally gorgeous

To Think I Almost Didn't Read This Book

Riley Winters is having a tough go of it. She's recently out of a crappy marriage and her ex is still a problem. Her son, River, is the bright spot in an otherwise tedious life. Worst of all, she thinks she has to carry her burdens alone and not let her family and friends share the load.

Liam Bowers is so many good things. I leave the details for you to discover.

I didn't want to read this book. Something about the cover and the blurb made me think it would be maudlin and weepy, over-angsty and depressing. Since I read romance to be uplifted, to find joy and hope, I figured it was not for me. But I'm so glad to be wrong! Riley and Liam's story does have it's drama, both within the relationship and from outside. But it's necessary and useful drama - the kind that lets characters grow and triumph, the kind that creates a compelling story - and not just a lot of boo-hooing and navel-gazing.

I highly recommend this book. It's one of the best stories I've read this year and I look forward to reading more by this author. Took away one star for weak editing.

I am a place in my life right now that I am going through the stages of grief, So this was a heavy read for me. It is not the same as Riley Winters I am not leaving a abuse relationship, and moving on from a divorce. This girl was cut down so much I am sure she feels two feet tall. Her saving Grace is her baby boy River who I adored, he has a speech delay and has to have a speech therapist come for so at home therapy, ( My daughter was the exact same way, we had speech therapy, and when Liam was saying his words it all came back). After going through several therapist Liam finally shows up and not only changes everything for Riley but for River too. Riley is finally starting to live again when her ex decides that he wants River and he wants Riley dead.
I really felt connected with Riley all her feeling are so real and raw. Liam was a White Knight, a prince charming. I loved Liam so much he was the perfect boyfriend...almost to perfect, way to perfect always saying exactly what Riley needed to hear, and he put his life on hold for her. I just felt like it was all give and no take.

Wonderfully Angsty Read

This was a "real" book. Riley became so real to me so fast, it blew my mind. Her heartache and triumphs became mine. She was trying to overcome her first marriage and all of the scars it left behind. Meeting Liam seemed to be a great start for her. Just as Riley thought everything would be smooth sailing, her ex was back in the picture wanting to see their son, River. I absolutely loved this book and how it completely drew me in.

A great read!

This is my 1st book that I have read from R.D. Berg and I'm not disappointed at all. I absolutely loved Riley and Liam's love story. Riley is a single mom with a 3year old son who has a speech delay and an abusive ex husband. When she least expected love can for a second chance and she took it. Although heartache struck again Love concurred in the end.

This book had me feeling like I was going through all the stages of grief along with the characters. I felt like I could totally relate to the story with the exception of being in and abusive relationship but the author makes you feel what the characters are going through and made it very relatable. This book is wonderfully written and can't wait to check out more from this author.

This book is all kinds of bad. The writing is mediocre, the story premise isn't bad, execution is lacking. The writing is almost juvenile. Riley, the main character, is annoying and just dumb. So many things she should have done and made the most sense to do...she didn't.
I really really tried to finish this book, just couldn't do it. Done wasting my time.

"...you can leave a toxic situation, but the scars that are left behind are almost harder to deal with."

This is one of those novels where the story begins before you even start the first page. The cover of this one....absolutely beautiful. I hate to judge a book by its cover, but I will say that the story inside is just as breathtaking.

Riley Winters is struggling through life after her divorce. She does what a lot of women do and she doubts herself after being a relationship that has damaged her self esteem. She has shut out everyone in an effort to gain control back of her life. That is.. until Liam.

He is the steady breath that revives my soul when the unrelenting sea of life attempts to drown me.

I think a lot of us can see part of ourselves in Riley Winters. She has hung on too long to a marriage that was slowly sinking her. Depression then grabs hold of her and she goes through a period of self doubt. She slowly works on herself on the inside, in order to move forward with her life that has come to a stand still.

This novel held my attention, right through to the end. Did I see some of it coming? Well, yes. BUT. Who cares? It was all about the journey. You slowly see Riley's character emerge from the darkness. Sure, she makes some mistakes... but who doesn't? She learns from them and turns her life around for the better.

Liam. He is just the perfect book boyfriend. He has his own 'demons', but when he first lays eyes on Riley.... it's done. He knows she may be slightly broken, but he wants to stick around for the long haul.

Thank you R.D. Berg, for this one!
