Hi Everyone, noob question I was hoping to get some help with. I wanted to start doing some video editing with my new Hackintosh. I messed around a little on my iMac in the past, but due to the amount of time it took to import videos and also export the final versions, I decided it would be a good use of my new Hackintosh to do it.

However, after getting my rig up and running, I've noticed that the amount of time it takes to import movies is the same as my 2 year old iMac. I have a much faster processor (4 core instead of 2 cores), higher amount of RAM (24GB compared to 8GB), yet the time it takes is still the same. Is this due to me not having a graphics card? I use Intel HD 4000 for the Hackintosh, and I had ATI Radeon 5670 in my 2010 iMac.

I was thinking to move my photo editing to my new Hackintosh as well (as I often get a little lag after making an edit on a photo using Aperture until the edit shows up on the photo). However, if this is also gonna be the case with Aperture, maybe I'll stick with the iMac.

The drives I tried using to import the videos were a Samsung 830 Series SSD and a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm SATA 6.0 (3TB). Thanks!

iMovie use a mix of both technologies, GPU render the interface and other apple effects while the CPU render the video in the editor and the final rendering, most video editing software works this way.

Adobe Premiere use CUDA technology to render video in realtime, it works nice in OSX using some manual patching but I have tested it and it works good.

After Effects also use CUDA but for certain effects like 3D Raytracing.

I have never used aperture but I doubt it use GPU rendering, Lightroom is CPU only too.

Importing videos depends of which cable you use to transferee the video from the camera and your hard drive speeds.

Thanks for the input guys! When I said transfers, I meant taking an mp4 or mov file from my hard disk, and importing it into iMovie so I can take clips from them and put them into a new project. Sometimes, the file will take less than a minute to import and generate thumbnails, while other times it will take over 2 hours for a single file (and it doesn't always seem to depend on file sizes). I just figured it would be a lot faster since my Hackintosh is much more powerful than my 2010 iMac.

Since I can't get displayport to work on my Z77-UD5H board, I may have to buy a graphics card so I can use my iMac as a display...so I hopefully that will help with the iMovie speeds as well!
