Khawaja misses out for opening ODI

There's no room for Usman Khawaja in Australia's XI for the opening Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series match tomorrow, with Shaun Marsh to partner David Warner at the top of the order.

Khawaja has been in stellar form throughout the summer, but it's the older Marsh brother who gets first crack at New Zealand in Auckland.

"Shaun (Marsh) has been in the squad, he played well in Australia and I think he deserves the first opportunity, so he's going to get that out here tomorrow," Australia captain Steve Smith said.

Smith confirmed Khawaja will feature in the three-match series at some point.

"He's unlucky to miss out but Shaun's going to get the first opportunity," Smith added.

"He'll play one of the (three ODI) games at least.

"He does need a hit going into what is a big Test series and he's batting extremely well.

"(Marsh) deserves the first opportunity." 

"No doubt he'd (khawaja) be frustrated. He's hitting the ball extremely well.

"But the one-day side is a tough side to break into.

"We're the current world champions. We've been playing some very good one-day cricket and the batters have been scoring lots of runs.

"We scored 300 on every occasion in the recent one-day series (against India) at home."

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum did not name his side for tomorrow's match, and was "surprised" by Marsh's selection over Khawaja.

"I was a little bit surprised about it (Khawaja's omission) to be honest," McCullum said. "He's been the form batsman in the Australian summer, across all different forms of the game as well.

"He's in some incredible touch. The guys who has replaces him, Shaun Marsh, is a very, very good player as well. We saw that when we played against them (Australia) in Adelaide.

"The thing about Australia is that they've got so much depth they can afford to have guys missing from their line-up but they're going to be replaced by guys who are equally as strong. "

Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood returns to the one-day XI after resting the final four VB ODI Series matches against India and the entire KFC T20 INTL series.

"We've got quite an inexperienced bowling attack. We've got quite a few guys that are out but the guys are learning quite quickly," Smith said.

Uncapped leg-spinner Adam Zampa was not selected, leaving the spinning duties to allrounder Glenn Maxwell.   

New Zealand are the current holders of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy following their thrilling one-wicket win over Australia in the 2015 Cricket World Cup clash in Auckland.

Australia got their revenge in the World Cup final, defeating the Black Caps by seven wickets at the MCG.

Wednesday's match will be the first time the two teams have met in 50-over battle since, starting at 2pm local time (12pm AEDT).
