Asian American and Pacific Islander Leadership Summit - Teach For America New York City
UPDATED ON 2.8.2016: DEADLINE TO APPLY IS NOW SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14th at 11:59PM!

Asian American and Pacific Islander Leadership Summit (AAPILS) February 19th-20th
For sophomores, juniors, and seniors attending college and recent college graduates  in the New York City, NY area. This application should take less than one hour to complete.

Overview:
The Teach For America New York City region will host selected students to attend the Asian American and Pacific Islander Leadership Summit (AAPILS), whose mission is to cultivate and increase the leadership skills of AAPI undergraduate students. Teach For America is uniquely positioned to make a difference in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. AAPILS will drive the work of engaging undergraduate students and recent college graduates in partnership with regional and national organizations that focus on working with and serving the AAPI community.

Summit Objectives:
(1) have participants reflect on their own AAPI identity; (2) develop participant understanding of AAPI history; (3) identify role models and advocates in the AAPI education community; (4) be empowered to advocate for and with our community partners and their work; and (5) help participants view how they can have an active stake in advocating for educational equity and meet and learn from peers invested in similar issues.

Eligibility:
Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors attending college in New York City area and recent college graduates are eligible to apply.
Applicants must be willing to commit approximately 1 hour prior to the Summit to complete preparation work, to be sent upon acceptance.
Applicants must be interested in raising awareness about educational inequity on their campuses after Summit – this can take on multiple forms, to be discussed at the Summit.
While attendance is free, we will not be able to provide reimbursement for travel or lodging expenses.

Here’s what AAPILS participants said about the experience last year:
Even though it was a very short conference, AAPILS allowed Asian American and Pacific Islanders to reflect on their identity. We don't usually take our own time to understand who we are. This summit exposes you to different people who may share the same issues that would help you realize you're not the only one who never understood what it means to be an AAPI.
It was truly empowering listening to other people share similar battles / struggles and empathize with mine. … If we don’t develop a strong sense of who we are as AAPI’s, how can we even begin to address the social and political inequalities AAPI’s face? Today, this question is becoming more pertinent.
I would definitely recommend this to others. I got to meet a bunch of passionate people who I can identify with.

To Apply:
Complete the online application which involves answering a few short questions about yourself and your interest in this opportunity.
The deadline to apply is SUNDAY, February 14th at 11:59 PM EST.
