It's official - there will be a new Indiana Jones film.

Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger confirmed that a new adventure starring the famous archaeologist is on its way in the wake of the huge success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Speaking to Bloomberg about Disney's acquisitions, such as Lucasfilm, Iger said: "With George Lucas's Star Wars - and Indiana Jones, by the way, which will be coming - we have more great stories."

The last film in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was released in 2008.

Steven Spielberg recently said he had "fervent hope" that Indiana Jones 5 would happen.

Despite continued rumours that Chris Pratt could be taking on the iconic role, producer Frank Marshall previously insisted that only Harrison Ford can play Indy.

The Force Awakens recently passed the $1 billion mark at the box office, and is the fastest film ever to do so.

It currently stands as the ninth highest-grossing film of all time.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in UK and US cinemas now. Watch the trailer below:
