NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Women's Discus Final Results Michaela Dendinger and
Sara Wells of Wayne State College each earned All-American honors with second and third place finishes in the discus Friday afternoon at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan.
Dendinger, a sophomore from Coleridge (Hartington HS), unleashed a new school record throw of 178' 3" on the second throw in finals to earn her second place finish, trailing only Winona State's Alissa Rausch at 181' 2". The prevous school record of 175' 6" was held by
Sara Wells, who recorded the mark in the prelims less than an hour earlier. Dendinger entered finals fifth with a top prelim throw of 159' 1" before recording her school record throw in the finals. It's the first-ever All-American finish for Dendinger.
Wells, a senior from Albion (Boone Central HS), was in first place after the prelims with a short-lived school record mark of 175' 6" on her second throw in preliminaries. Wells then slipped to third place after Rausch and Dendinger recorded their marks in the finals. It was the second All-American performance in the discus for Wells, who placed fifth in the 2013 nationals as a sophomore.
Dendinger and Wells will both compete again Saturday in the shot put at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships starting at 10:15 a.m.
