Cal U plays to double-overtime tie with IUP, 1-1

Vulcans snap scoreless streak that dated back to Sept. 19, a span of over 625 minutes

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 7) – The Vulcans snapped a five-game scoreless streak on Wednesday night with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 4-5-3 overall behind a 4-4-3 mark in league play. In the contest, the Vulcans snapped a streak of over 625 minutes without a goal, as their last goal came on Sept. 19. Meanwhile, IUP now stands at 6-4-2 this season with a 5-3-2 record in conference action.

The Crimson Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Mackenna Miller scored her third goal of the season off a give-and-go into the box. Cal U nearly tied the score at the 30:30-mark when senior Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) placed a shot on goal that was initially stopped by the goalie before the ball rolled just past the left post without a Vulcan able to redirect it into the net.

IUP nearly added to its lead in the 61st minute when a shot attempt deflected off the post. The Vulcans later tied the score at 1-1 at the 69:43-mark when McCann recorded her first goal of the year off an assist from sophomore Kira Carberry (Odenton, Md./Arundel).

McCann is now tied with Kim Kottmeier (1992-95) for sixth all-time in school history with 30 goals.

In the first overtime, both teams attempted one shot with McCann hitting the post in the 94th minute. Each team then tallied two shot attempts in the final overtime period.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) recorded seven saves and has now posted at least five saves in seven-consecutive games.

The Crimson Hawks finished the game with a 13-11 shot advantage, while both teams attempted three corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action this weekend when it travels to face Millersville on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m.
