Rate this book
It’s said that your life flashes before your eyes when you die.
It must only happen to those whose lives are worthy.
Clearly, Bailey’s life is not.

Unwanted from the day she was born, and then discarded, Bailey’s only plan in life is to make it through to the next day.
But one hopeless night, one wrong decision, and one pull of the trigger changes everything.
Not just for her, but for Nate DeLuca too.
Born into a world of crime, he had his entire life planned out for him.
He wasn’t supposed to find her that night.
He wasn’t meant to capture her, either.
And he sure as hell wasn’t meant to save her.

Sometimes villains are born.
And sometimes… heroes are made.

After reading Combative last year, I’ve been anxiously waiting for its sequel. Let's be clear, Jay McLean is one of my favorite authors and I will read anything this woman writes. Also- I had questions! Lots and lots of questions. From the moment I started this story, I was completely intrigued. It held my attention from the first page to the last. I can’t wait for this book to be released. I can’t wait to talk about it with people. I have so much on my mind and so many theories. It’s one of those books that needs to be discussed!

It’s strange- how love can form from the most fucked-up of circumstances.

Everyone has a favorite character when it comes to Jay’s books. I have a 3-way tie. Logan, Josh and now… NATE. Nate is so different from any of her other heroes, but he was intriguing and I can’t imagine someone reading this book and not loving this man. There was something about him that was so imperfectly perfect. I couldn’t get enough. And then there was Bailey, she was great too ;)

 photo 9B66CFC5-5860-40A0-8A03-FA7D88AB7BAA_zpsctqfvzqe.jpg

Redemptive had one thing that Combative lacked for me. An intense CONNECTION. The connection I felt between these two characters was strong and it was fierce. It made the story for me. I want to talk about this book and discuss things, but I really feel like going in as blind as possible is best. I loved that I had no clue what was going on and was able to make all the connections and enjoy things as they came.

We all know I think Nate was perfection and Bailey was great, but Jay writes the most perfect side characters. I can’t write a review for this book without giving a huge shout out to Tiny. I loved that guy!

I beta read this book weeks ago and it’s still on my mind. Nate Nate Nate. I can’t stop thinking about Nate. I can’t stop thinking of this book. I can’t stop going through and thinking what could have been had these characters situations been different and what can still be in the future. I didn’t get all my answers, but some things I now see so much clearer. Any book I read that has that lasting power deserves a 5-star rating. This is a book you won’t want to miss out on. Start with Combative, then jump into Redemptive!

'Redemptive' is the second installment in Jay McLean’s series, entitled ‘Combative’ and to be honest it was like nothing I expected. However, like the previous installment was intriguing, well written and held my attention from start to finish. Jay delivered a fantastic blend of romance and suspense and again she left me wanting more. If the first book in the series centers around Bailey and Ky, this second book tells the story of Bailey and Nate. The events here take place six years earlier, which I’m not sure I enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the story, but I didn’t like the fact some of my questions are still unanswered.

“I feel your pain. I live your fear.”

Bailey and Nate’s story was fast-paced, intense, beautiful and held me at the edge of my seat for one reason or another. In this second installment we find out more about Bailey’s past, so if you like me were wondering where did she came from, you will get your answers…at least some of them. To be honest, I connected more with our heroine in this second installment. She was portrayed really well (better than she was portrayed in the previous book) and like our hero she had depth. I really felt for poor Bailey. At times my heart broke for her.

“Bailey had become my drug. My addiction. My escape. My salvation. My curious fascination turned obsessive infatuation.”

Nate de DeLuca was intriguing to say the least. His character was complex, well written and even if he was supposed to be the anti-hero of the story, he was the hero in every single way. And he was that kind of hero that I simply love – the hero that will do anything for his lady. Sweet and caring, attentive and protective, Nate won me over from the very beginning. I definitely liked him more than Ky’s character (the male main character from book1). In my opinion his character was more vivid, maybe that’s why.

“…a calm washed over me… the kind I suspected junkies got after taking a hit. Was Nate my drug? My addiction?”

Bailey and Nate’s connection was what I love the most here. It’s tangible, palpable, consuming and so well done. Not for one minute did I ever questioned their feelings for each other. The risks taken proved how much they mean for each other, how much they love each other.

“I gave her what she needed. I inhaled her cries and let them consume me, I tasted her tears and let them destroy me, I gave in to her pleas and let them control me, and then she did the same with me.”

Overall, this one was better than I expected and IMO better than the previous installment! I’m anxiously waiting for the third and final book in the series!

To say, Combative ended with a bang, and left me anxious to get my hands on the next book, would be an understatement. That ending killed me, but it left me desperate to know what was going to happen next. So, going into Redemptive I had expectations, but, I did not get the answers I wanted. Instead, I was sent back to the past. And given a glimpse into Madison/Bailey's past.

"We all need saving at some point, and I'm here to save you.'

I was given insight into that that pivotal night. The night Bailey crossed paths with Kyler's brother, and how she met Nate Deluca. And holy hell, I totally jumped Kyler's ship. I fell head over heels for Nate. The circumstances surrounding Nate and Bailey's relationship is difficult to say the least, but I felt their connection.

I apologize for the vagueness of this review, but it's difficult to get into without spoiling. Overall, it was a suspenseful read, that kept my interest. Now, to be honest, I'm nervous about where this series will go. I have no idea what Jay has up her sleeve, I just hope my Nate doesn't get crushed in the process.

McLean is a magician of words. When I started out on my journey with this series I could never have predicated how the characters and the plot would make me feel. Jumping into this book was an easy choice for me to make, any series that McLean sets her mind on is sure to be an adventure not to be missed, and the combative series is one of the most memorable that I can think of. Get ready to fall in love with more of this authors work and prepare yourself to be blown away. This book is yet another example of just how wonderfully talented Jay McLean really is.

What did I love?
This book and series has an originality that is hard to come by. I was so impressed by the depth and heart of the story telling it was hard not to become obsessed with the narrative and characters. Perfectly thought out I can't explain how cleverly this series is woven together and if you think you've figured out what is to become of these characters then you'll be pleasantly shocked at the turn of events that Jay McLean creates. Crazy, insightful, moving and intriguing McLean has created a series that has got me wrapped up it's pages full of talent. Each book has been a perfect length for a trilogy and I've fallen in love with so many of the characters involved that I'm concerned that I won't have room for them all. But don't be mistaken I'm fully confident that McLean will take this trilogy to a dramatic and life shaking conclusion, I just need to gather up all my patience to wait for what I know is going to be an unforgettable conclusion.

Why not five?
I must be crazy not to be handing out the full five stars for this novel but alas I must stay true to my book heart and stick to the niggling doubt in the back of my mind. On the one hand I felt desperate to consume this authors words, which are as always talented beyond what I could ever explain. But on the flip side I still have a heap full of frustrations and unending questions about this series which lends to my slight lack of enjoyment. Without giving anything away, because this is a series to be experienced. Nothing moved forward in the pace of which I personally needed and in the end I felt like I was left with another wait for a book that quite frankly I'm desperate for.

description

Final thoughts ...
I can't formulate the words that will be able to explain just how incredible Jay McLean really is. This series has blown me away. The authors ingenuity is second to none and I can't recommend her words more. There is a plenty of reasons why this author is a favourite of mine but the biggest and most obvious one is that I'm simply in love with her words. If you want a series that will make you glued to your kindle in anticipation and at the same time test your frustration levels then this is the series for you. Personally, I can't wait for more and I'm excited for others to join me in the Combative reading journey. Enjoy ...

Redemptive is like nothing I expected. Which is crazy, crazy I tell you. I mean it’s the second book in the Combative Trilogy, so naturally had expectations and thoughts on what would happen next after the cliffhanger we received at the end of Combative.

"We both wanted to matter. And we both needed to be saved."

I can tell you without fail that you will not have seen this one coming. I can also tell you that this turn in events will completely change the way you think about this series. When I read Combative I found Madison to be a little odd, endearing, but odd and I was constantly confused about where she came from and her motives. I thought Ky was this damaged guy, with good intentions, but it was evident he was struggling with his past.

When I read Redemptive, I thought who hell is Ky and why did I even care about this guy, because hello Nate Deluca. If you haven’t read Redemptive you are probably thinking this bitch is crazy. If you have read it you are probably thinking this bitch is crazy, he is mine! Well, I don’t want to fight over him because I called dibs a long time ago, so it’s not really relevant. LOL

"It’s that the problem with “simple” was LOVE. And within the walls of this room, with the bonds that kept us together, neither simple nor love could exist."

Okay, back on track. This story was absolutely everything I want in a book, but nothing like I expected the sequel to this mafia-type-suspense-read to be. This story made me fall madly in love with the characters. I love their strength and devotion. I loved how they love with their entire being, even to a fault. I love how their love was so beyond powerful that it was all consuming and had the ability to break them. The sacrifices and risks taken to love and protect went beyond what’s normal and natural.

Their love was so consuming it made me feel so much for them. I also was so completely wrapped up in the plot and trying to connect the dots to things I learned in Combative. Trying to discover where everyone fit together and dying to know the truths had me rapidly turning the pages. I am not even going to try to imagine what’s to come because I know this story has an epic conclusion coming.

"I guess some things are greater than the fears we hold on to."

If you haven’t read Combative or Redemptive, I highly recommend them. There are few books out that deliver so much emotion, suspense, and sexiness. This is one book I am so excited for people to read because I know it’s nothing like you expected and it will blow your mind. Jay McLean is a freaking rockstar and absolutely brilliant.

The thing I love about Jay McLean is that when I pick up one of her books, I never know what to expect and I don't know exactly what I was expecting when picking up Redemptive, but what I got was the complete opposite of what I had even dreamed or imagined. If you think you have any theories whatsoever as to what you are going to get when diving into this book, then think again, you are probably wrong!

Combative is the first book in this new adult suspense trilogy in which we were introduced to several characters, only some of which make a return to Redemptive in order to give us a more background into the mysteries surrounding Bailey. #WhoIsBailey?

Our man Nate DeLuca is integral to this part of the story and fans of his from book one will be in their element, I absolutely adored him and his relationships with both Bailey and Tiny, his right hand man.

"I protect you because you're my boss, Nate. I kill for you because you're my family."

Overall, it was a fantastic, intricate story that has left me with wanting more, but I was left feeling very conflicted as to who my loyalties should lie with, and I also feel like I am none the wiser regarding where the plot is going. I would have liked just a few more answers to keep me going until the final installment. On the plus side though, I have so much more to look forward to.

I definitely recommend re-reading or at least skim reading certain parts of Combative, because this story is so detailed and the characters have so much depth, there is so much to take in and processes. I loved how Jay has proved that she can write something different to her signature sweet new adult writing and written something that is more suspenseful and thrilling with a mafia type feel.

This is looking to be a five-star series overall, I can't wait to get all the answers in the final installment.

"We all need saving at some point, and I'm here to save you."

Redemptive is part two of three. Told in dual POV.

5 Stars for Nate

How is it that this is book 2 in the series and yet I am still completely in the dark. *Book 1, Combative MUST be read first*. While I have so much I want to say about this, I am not totally sure I could do justice to what I read, or I would take away the experience from another reader! But...WOW, never have I been so completely captured with NO definite end and so much more to go.

I admit that I had to go back and re-read Combative, as it had one heck of a cliffhanger. This series is a bit off the typical road that McLean travels. I have come to love her stories of young love and profound life changing moments with her signature sassy wit, humor and age appropriate intimacy, so I was unprepared for the Combative Series. To be honest, it wasn't 100% sure I liked or even knew what the heck was going on. I was introduced to a broken Ky and somewhat odd Madison...both endearing in their own ways, I didn't quite connect with them per se, but the whole tale was shrouded in mystery. I NEEDED to know more about the story as a whole, the ins and outs of the characters, just everything...but I was left in the dark.

Then came Redemptive. YES! finally some answers right? NOPE! Again the author took a detour and IMO wrote one of her best works to date. This was a completely different tale from Combative. Just when I thought I would get the LIGHT, I got Nate DeLuca and Bailey.

Her life was over. And I, no doubt would be the one to end it"

WHAT????? WHO???? OH, this story...these characters...I cannot even begin to explain the feels. With desperation, longing, fear, pride, and passion, I read two characters who found a deep, intense bond amid life threatening existences. Neither is perfect. Both are so unbelievably damaged and I LOVED them beyond reason!

..."the lies we lived created the perfect balance between chaos and calm. And while the chaos could kill us, the calm had us aching for one more second, one more moment of self destruction."

All I can say is that this is Jay McLean doing what she does best...weaving an intricate tale of the heart and the mind...creating characters who never leave you...dropping those profound moments of intimacy...leaving you impressed and desperately wanting more!

"You are my sunshine. My only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey…”

Wow! I enjoyed the first book, Combative but this second book, wow, seriously loved it! This takes place six years earlier and it’s Bailey’s story before meeting Ky...her time with Nate.

 photo redemptive_zpsypx8xrxl.jpg

We learn about how Bailey came to be on the streets and how she met Nate. It also gives us an unexpected glimpse into happenstance, where Bailey and Ky were in the same place and time way before their paths cross again in book one.

I liked Ky with Bailey but I must say, I fucking adored Bailey with Nate. Yeah, I’m sucker for the anti-hero, no secret there but this was more than that. Nate and Bailey needed each other but their situation was one that was destined to fail. The circumstances that bound them together would also choke them to death.

I’m rooting for these two but who knows what Jay has in store. All I know it, I’m ready! While this second book answered some questions about Bailey and Nate, I still have many and am really looking forward to the third book, Destructive.

AUTHOR: Jay McLean
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
RELEASE DATE: March 8th, 2016

MY RATING
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

WARNING: DO NOT go into this book expecting to know what's going to happen BECAUSE you will be WRONG!! There are TWISTS and TURNS, you LOVED Ky but now you LOVE Nate even more (Yes that happens)..GAH

To fully understand Redemptive and to connect with the story/characters it's vital that you read Book #1 Combative

Dual POV's Nate & Bailey (aka Madison)

After reading Combative last year, I’ve been anxiously awaiting its sequel and waiting and waiting and FINALLY I got to read it and it has exceeded ALL my EXPECTATIONS!!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Remember that sucky cliffy the author pushed us all over in Combative, and gave us all that evil laugh, yeah well this doesn't start from there, this starts well before that, shit that I didn't even see coming at me goes down..This book pretty much comes full circle..

I don’t know what came first. The sound of the gunshot, the hot white behind my eyes, or the blood on my hands. But afterward, everything was still. Silent. Blood poured from His wound, down the solid steel of my barrel and seeped between my trembling fingers. - Nate

Gods this book has it all, a botched drug deal, attempted rape, murder, a girl under protection, love

The lies we lived created the perfect balance between chaos and calm. And while the chaos could kill us, the calm had us aching for one more second, one more moment of self destruction.

Remember Madison her real name is Bailey and this is her story, but there's one surprise element and his name is Nate.

“Nate—he didn’t have to do any of the things he’d done for me, from the moment he found me, to the moment he saved me, to now.
He owed me nothing.
And I owed him my life."

There's so many twists and turns in this story that no matter where I go for this review I'd be giving away main spoilers..

The circumstances in which we came to be weren’t derived from fate, or from a blind date, or a coffee shop moment where we caught each other’s gaze from across the room. No. Our fate included drugs. Included guns. Included death.

Remember all Madison's secrets she was harboring in book#1 this book reveals all but so much more comes to light..
When I first read "Combative" I seriously thought Madison had been released from a mental hospital, saying she was odd was an understatement she just wasn't all there, this book cleared that up for me completely but left me with a lot of WTF's and WTF am I reading moments..
Book #1 there I was rooting for Ky and now here I am like a twisted biarch rooting for Nate GAH!!

I wished more than anything in the world, that this wasn’t our life. That we were able to be out there, loving each other freely and honestly, because I’d give up the world if I could’ve met her as her and have her fall in love with me for me.

MY THOUGHTS
I loved book #1 but I shit you not I LOVED this one, it's just got more of that underlying mafia feel to the whole story..
This had me racing through the pages trying to connect all the dots as the story unfolded..

Loved, loved, loved, loved, LOVED!!!!! Oh, my NATE DE LUCA! I have said it before and I will say it again, this is my new favorite book by Jay McLean. It's still her New Adult goodness, but it has a suspense, mafia mystery, forbidden love twist to it. BRILLIANT!! I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Rejection leads to an act of kindness which is followed by a boom that leads to four walls in a room, the counting of tile and a collection of leaves.
She's trapped

.....of the silence

"He was the epitome of the perfect calm, right before the most dangerous storm."
-Bailey

I knew there was something about Nate DeLuca that I liked. In Combative we are somewhat introduced to him. In Redemptive we get to piece together some things we could of never known with the little bit of breadcrumbs McLean gave us initially in book 1.

 photo REDEMPTIVE COLLAGE FINAL PIC1_zpsanqzqmfo.jpg

“So you are afraid of me?” he asked.
“Yes. No. Maybe.” The corners of his mouth lifted and he bit down on his bottom lip, trying to cover his smile. But he was too late, I'd already succumbed to the full effect of it.

Bailey becomes and I almost hate to say this but she falls prey to circumstances. I'm not sure what she could of done to prevent it or change it. Things just happened so freaking fast at first that even the reader won't expect it.

"I feel your pain. I live your fear." -Bailey

Just flip me upside down and turn me all around why don't you.

What readers should know
Combative is a mystery in theme, in plot and even in its characters. It has the reader constantly questioning things. Who, what, where, when, why and how. Total mystery. Total intrigue. Redemptive is more of a mind catcher...meaning the story unfolds and you just get CAUGHT UP in it without consequence. Your flipping the page with one question. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
So yeah, total mind catcher. Redemptive will take hold of you, grip you up then against your will release you, with no idea of where to go from here.

Everything with these two(Nate & Bailey) is at an escalated level. Their attraction, their affection, their love, what brings them together, what fights to keep them apart, their will to survive is all at an escalation throughout the entire book. The whole connection is just WHOA.
Alright, alright I gotta shut it down cause I talk too much.

My thoughts
I was not expecting this at all. And there is not much you can say without giving too much away. The book starts and ends on two distinct separate levels of desperation. In fact totally desperate, it's palpable and it will cling to you.

The writing
Jay McLean has a strong hand when it comes to capturing moments and making those moments count for the characters. In turn these moments are impactful for the readers. I looooove this about her writing.

"You are my sunshine. My only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey…”

Jay McLean is killing me!!!! Literally!!!
I just finished the book and i feel such an anguish of what will happen after all and to be totally honest with you, i really don't know which outcome i preffer....
I wasn't expecting the second book to be proceeded that way, but darn... I loved it!!!!
It's strange, but my heart is heartbroken... For Nate and his.... Bailey!!!!
For what they had and what have they lost... Even though I'm wondering... Was it real after all???
So many fucking questions and no many answers in here, only a ray of light in her past.... And then more questions and more agony!!!!
Thank you, God, for making me wait and finally i'm binge reading this series, or else i couldn't survive that's the only sure thing!!!!

"We all need saving at some point, and I'm here to save you."

Her life was over. And I, no doubt would be the one to end it"

"It’s strange- how love can form from the most fucked-up of circumstances."

Well, for once again, i don't know how much to tell you about this story...
In here, we had different main characters than the previous book, but don't fool themselves... They are connecting between them...
In here, the time has come to learn more about Nate and his Bailey....

“Bailey had become my drug. My addiction. My escape. My salvation. My curious fascination turned obsessive infatuation.”

“A calm washed over me… the kind I suspected junkies got after taking a hit.
Was Nate my drug?
My addiction?”

And as the blurb is saying...

"It’s that the problem with “simple” was LOVE. And within the walls of this room, with the bonds that kept us together, neither simple nor love could exist."

Well, my heart was aching for Nate and Bailey so badly...
They were both broken and in a weird way, they found solace in each other...
Bailey was in the wrong place and Nate, even a bad guy, tried to protect her in a very unorthodox way...
Feelings got involved, but the situation was tricky... So, these said feelings were true after all???

“I gave her what she needed. I inhaled her cries and let them consume me, I tasted her tears and let them destroy me, I gave in to her pleas and let them control me, and then she did the same with me.”

"His existence was almost as pathetic as mine.
No. It was worse.
Because he had a choice. I didn't."

And then the ending came and i was trying so hard to connect the dots between the two books and that's where i'm losing my freakin' mind!!! Because I liked very much Kyler, but i think i fell in love with Nate and now, my heart is pounding really loud from all the agony!!!
Some has to lose, but who's gonna be??? Arrrrrr..... Jay, you're killing me here!!!!
Time is running out... Tick tock... Tick tock....

"Who i am outside this room is the one who's trapped, Bailey, but with you... you allow me to be me, you love me for me. I know you think I saved your life, but the truth is, you saved mine...
You're the only freedom I've ever known, Bailey."

"I wished more than anything in the world, that this wasn’t our life. That we were able to be out there, loving each other freely and honestly, because I’d give up the world if I could’ve met her as her and have her fall in love with me for me."

First let me start by saying EVERY time I finish a Jay McLean book I try to make the 5 star rating go higher..and it just won't. Emailing Goodreads now..

This series is some of this authors best work, a different story that leaves you breathless, straddling a line between what good and bad are...what love looks like and who deserves it more? At the end of book one Combative I was left shocked, wide eyed, heart racing and thinking I knew exactly what I needed from book two when it came out. In my readers mind I had drawn up the perfect scenario to bridge book one to book three.

I. Got. It. All. Wrong.

The beauty of Jay's books is you think you know what you need from her stories. She delivers something totally different and you end the second book not remembering why you wanted what you did in the first place. Make sense? Probably not..unless you have read this and then BAM it does. She's a creative mastermind that tweaks, toys, floats in emotions you didn't know you could feel within the pages of a story. So immersed in what's happening you forget where reality ends and fiction begins. It's a gift really, a talent to fuck with your mind, but in way that makes you left wanting to thank her, and beg for book three

This is FLOVE people. READ THIS SERIES!

It was a super long week in Hungary because we had to work on Saturday, too (Sucks right? But in exchange next week we will have a really long weekend. Yay!), and then Redemptive came, and damn, the „just more chapter lie” effect got hold of me, because I just couldn’t put this book down! I had to stay up really-really late at nights because it was THAT good, so I am barely able to stay my eyes open when I write this review after this week. Thanks Jay! :D

This is my second book in a row when I have to write a review without giving anything away so I won't say too much. But I have to tell you guys, that this was totally mind-blowing! I loved it so much, but seriously what the heck!? I loved Combative too, but Redemptive was like I read a completely different story. Jay left us with a huge cliffhanger at the end of the first book, so I couldn’t wait to read the second part of the series. I thought I will find out all the questions that bothered me since I put down Combative (Who is Madison? Who is Sarah? What happened after the ending?) And then: BOOM! I was so wrong! This book left behind an even bigger pile of question marks and it left me in a deeper dark than the first book.

Jay McLean is one of my favorite authors and I’m so glad that she dared to step out of her comfort zone to bring something absolutely new and different to us. Her writing style was flawless like always, but this book was also suspenseful and thrilling, with so many twists and turns.
I really loved the characters! Nate, Bailey and Tiny were both so amazingly complex and developed! I already mentioned before that Jay Mclean is a master of creating the perfect book boyfriends. And now? Who is Ky? I want Nate DeLuca! Nate, oh Nate you "ragazzo bel rotto". He absolutely stole my heart!

This book is amazing, especially combined with Combative. Because these two books are obviously connected in some ways, but I still can’t tell you how the puzzle pieces will fit together at the end. And with this book Jay Mclean could create something really different! It is like a love triangle just on a different timeline, because after this book I really can’t tell you with whom will my loyalty lie at the end.

This was an amazing page-turner story about two broken souls, who meet under really complicated circumstances. They find their love between fear, blood, darkness and hiding, and nobody can be sure that they will be able to find the way out to the light.

It's not very often that I am lost for words. But it's also not very often that you read a book that takes over your every thought, every emotion. This book and its intensity, the writing, the mystery and the unforgettable characters have rendered me completely speechless. I usually read three books per day and I haven't been able to finish a single book since. So therefore, the word slinger, the mastermind, the insanely talented McLean has officially broken me.

I love that Jay McLean has stepped out of her comfort zone to bring something completely unexpected, but most of all a story that will have you questioning your own sanity. If you think Jay has written a New Adult romance that contains the beautiful love and emotion, you are seriously WRONG on all levels. What Jay has actually delivered is rip roaring suspense that will have you holding onto your reading device for dear life, just waiting to have your heart pulled from your throat. It is a story that pushes boundaries, builds new layers, and delivers a connection between two characters that have everything against them.

Readers NEED to read Combative- Book 1 in this series or you will not have any idea of what is going on. But for those readers who are familiar with Combative and think you are going to get all of your answers...stop right there! This book blew any thoughts or theories I originally had out of the water and now I am left absolutely OUT OF MY MIND excited for the continuation.

I cannot even find words to describe the characters. Where do I even start with Nate DeLuca...FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, THAT MAN, he has taken over every thought. I felt EVERYTHING he said, EVERYTHING he did and EVERYTHING he thought. I have been a Logan Matthews (More Than Series) girl since day one of following this author, but Nate DeLuca, officially holds the title of my ultimate book boyfriend EVER.

Bailey, WOW! I don't want to go too much into her character because it would be one giant spoiler and those things are just not cool. But I adored her, her innocence and complexity.

This is one of, if not, THE BEST Jay McLean book to date. I am beyond excited for the next instalment, I am also incredibly nervous for where this story will conclude and what will actually happen. I have a bazillion questions and new theories that have taken over every thought. Jay McLean, you are a freaking genius.

5 stars: for the writing, the emotions, everything Jay McLean is really good at.

1 star: for the choice she made about Bailey's past. I hate she had feelings for someone else, it feels like a betrayal to me and I don't know now if she is manipulating Kyler or if she is sincere. So my lonely star is purely selfish and subjective. It has nothing to do with this author's huge talent.

4 stars: because now I like Nate and I'm all "What happened? What must I think now? Who must I root for? Should I love Bailey or hate her? Poor Kyler and poor Nate, they don't deserve what will happen to them. What a messs!!!!"

Shut up!
I so did not see that coming but I am LIVING FOR IT!

I won't deny that I was a little confused at the beginning because HELLO! I thought we were suppose to be shipping Kyler and the heroine?
But damnit! I won't deny that I feel more with these two. I SHIP them!
If someone had told me a few days ago that Nate De Luca would capture my heart, I'd seriously laugh at their faces but holy book world! Boy did this man steal my heart 💓

Redemptive is thrilling and suspenseful. When I was reading Combative, I just didn't have that connection I look for when I read books like these, particularly books written by Jay McLean, but I have to say..with Redemptive..I got that connection. I got the 'feels'.
I was riding the Combative series bandwagon and I was more than enjoying the ride.

I went into this book expecting to pick up where I left off. However, I was instantly WTFing as we take it back a bit. Relationships are explored and questions are answered...only to feel turned around and have many more questions arise.

The relationship explored this round made was exciting and satisfying. It will make you question where your loyalties lie.

Redemptive is a slow ride up and a thrilling, emotional, and mind boggling descent.

UPDATED REVIEW:
5.0 stars!
Title: Redemptive (Combative #2)
Author: Jay McLean
Release Date: March 8, 2016

Let me start off by saying this book is nothing like Jay’s other incredible books. Buckle up and get ready for a suspense-filled roller coaster ride. Jay spins a slightly dark and complex web of love, loyalty and mind f*ckery. Her imperfectly perfect characters come to life with Jay’s signature engaging writing style in this mafia romance. To say this book is unputdownable is an understatement.

I was super lucky to beta read Redemptive, and I have reread the ending at least a dozen times. It’s been a few weeks since I devoured this book and I've read two dozen books since I finished it. I can't get this book out of my head. You need to read Combative (book #1) first to understand the backstory. Don’t miss this one!

To me, calling Redemptive a sequel to Combative does it a disservice. That's not what it is. This book is a prequel.

I was so excited for this book. I really enjoyed Combative. I was smitten with Ky and Madison. I wanted to see more of their love story. I was also intrigued by Madison and her secrets, not to mention all of the work Ky had going on.

I was expecting to pick up where Combative left on, and it didn't. At all. We spend the entirety of Redemptive in Madison/Bailey's past. We meet a young Nate DeLuca, who we're expected to fall for. I just couldn't. I was far too invested in Ky/Madison. Not to mention, for me personally, the Nate/Bailey relationship was disturbing and not at all attractive.

That's not to say the writing here was poor. It definitely wasn't. I flew through the first 60%, because I was enthralled with Madison's past. By about 60% in though, I realized I wasn't getting the story I had hoped for, or needed and became frustrated. We barely got any answers, only a ton more questions.

I would recommend waiting until the third book in this trilogy is released to read this one, because you're just going to be left more frustrated after Redemptive. I'm hoping the finale will blow me away and tie all of these loose threads together.

Redemptive (Combative #2) by Jay McLean
4 stars!!

“We all need saving at some point, and I’m here to save you.”

After reading Combative I was itching for this book, with THAT ending I needed to know what was going to happen, but alas, I never found out eeek!! Jay McLean totally surprised me with this one as she took us back to the past and explored Madison/Bailey’s past. It wasn’t what I was expecting, nor what I wanted, but once I started reading I was hooked, I was addicted and I wanted MORE!!!

“I feel your pain. I live your fear.”

After reading Combative, I loved Kyler and now after reading Redemptive, I love Nate and I mean real like fan girl love Nate. There was so much we didn’t know about him and after reading Redemptive I am sure that you will feel the same way too. He is adorable, despite his shady business dealings.

Jay McLean takes us to the very beginning with Redemptive, how Bailey met Kyler’s brother and ultimately Nate DeLuca. Everything is traumatic and while the circumstances surrounding both meetings were not the best, Bailey made the most out of the bad situations that she constantly found herself in. After laying so low for so long, now wherever she went, trouble seemed to follow.

“And while the chaos could kill us, the calm had us aching for one more second, one more moment of self-destruction.”

Nate doesn’t love, but when he does he loves hard and nothing is more apparent than what we are shown in Redemptive. Nate has been through so much emotionally and physically and these have left deep scars on the inside. Nate puts his life literally on the line for love in Redemptive and I felt it all. I felt their connection, I felt his devotion and it warmed me from the inside out and although while you are you reading you just know deep down it cannot work, it doesn’t stop you from wishing and wanting with all your heart that they somehow find a way.

“Bailey had become my drug. My addiction. My escape. My salvation. My curious fascination turned obsessive infatuation.”

I have to mention how much I loved Tiny in this book, he was a great side character that really brought another dimension to the story and who took part in some unforgettable scenes. He was one character that you wanted in your corner and he made a damn good best friend.

Jay McLean delivers a suspenseful read that will have you on the edge of your seat at times. This is a different side to Jay McLean’s writing but one that she most definitely excels at. This was one of those stories where you felt the build up to the loud crescendo at the end and once those rumblings began you couldn’t help but feel it in the pit of your stomach. You knew how she ended Combative, well Redemptive is no easier…now I just need Destructive and QUICK!!

“But I wish you’d pulled the trigger.”

I really cannot anticipate what way this story is going to go and I have to say that scares me. As much as I loved Kyler, I do not want to see Nate get hurt and I am quaking in my boots. Jay McLean will have my fragile heart in the palm of her hands and I am not sure I trust her with it. She has decimated me on more than one occasion and I am well aware of the pain and devastation this little lady’s words can inflict. So with bated breath the wait begins once again…

“…you allow me to be me, you love me for me. I know you think I saved your life, but the truth is, you saved mine.”

Oh man where do I even start with this review?! I picked up this book right after finishing Combative and figured that it was gonna pick up where Combative left off. Well I was wrong Jay McLean took a leap and went backwards with this and instead we get to know Nate Deluca, let's say for all intents and purposes he was the villain in Combative. We meet him six years before Kyler does in Combative. We see where he crosses paths with people Ky knows but we're getting his story as well as Bailey's. This confused me at first but I caught on and thought oh my god this is brilliant! I give kudos to Jay for going this route, she almost created more questions than she answered but this story was so compelling. That even though it didn't pick up right where I thought it was going to, I had to read this book either way. I had to, no needed to get to know Nate and Bailey. I needed to see where these characters lives were headed and what set them on the paths that they were on! Jay again made me fall in love with ALL her characters! Every single one she writes in all her books always play such a pivotal role in her books, even if you think they're just a side characters. I'm actually just in awe and shock! I NEED more!!! It can't have ended the way that it did, I just gah!!!!! #cliffhangers!!!!!

P.s again I had one issue with the book and it has to do with the order of how things work with diabetics. I've been taking care of people with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes for years and 1) you test their blood sugar before you administer their insulin, as well as calculate the carbs they're gonna eat because that determines the amount of insulin they will either inject or tell their pump to give them.
2) unopened vials of insulin are stored in the fridge, once open they need to be in a temperature controlled environment. My issue is that her meds were kept in the bathroom. It confuses me because they make it sound like she's getting injections but if she's using a pen to administer her meds than it's not as strict about needing to be in the fridge. So maybe just some clarification as to what exactly she's using.

I will say I was hesitant at first. Knowing what I 'know' from Combative. BUT, She's killin this!!! So many moving parts to this very intricate story. Once I finished this installment, I went back over Combative and if even a quarter of what I think may be coming, is coming? Jay has spun one FANTASTIC tale!!! The only thing I can compare this to is maybe something from JM Darhower. Those are big words! I know. So excited for the final installment of this!! Can't wait to see what's REALLY going on in the present :))
Nice flippin job!!!

Sorry 🙁, but I did not enjoy this book at all. Good thing it was fast-paced storytelling... I'm not feeling the 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙇𝙪𝙘𝙖 "𝘧𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳" 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 with 𝗕𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆, it feels disjointed.

It's not a matter of confusion, I fully discern the whole narrative and purpose of why Redemptive needs to be written. To give us a glimpse of the history and all.

But it doesn't change the fact that I find myself bored of everything. So yeah...

5+ Mind F&$% stars across the board from #BabblingChatterReads Reviewers!

This has been one of the harder reviews for me to write because I am lost in a daze on everything that has happened. Needless to say that I am still reeling in shock of this AMAZING read.

It's said that your life flashes before your eyes when you die. It must only happen to those who lives were worthy.

Seriously, nothing could have prepared me for this utter mind F#$@ of this book! Who the? What the? When the? Where the? WHY?!?!? I totally thought I would have answers to some of the questions that have been in my mind since that cliffy in Combative but was thrown in a loop several times over as I got distracted by the overwhelming intensity of Nate Deluca & Bailey Wright's story. <3 My heart has been broken to pieces of EPIC proportions and it still has not been fixed. No movement, no progress even as I read those last words in the book. I'm still freaking shaking as I write.

Bailey had become my drug. My addiction. My escape. My salvation. My curious fascination turned obsessive infatuation.

Nate is someone I had least expected to fall hard for. I am at a lost on everything that has happened. Soooo Logan Matthews (from her More Than Series) was one that was on the top of my book boyfriend list but damn after meeting and getting to know Nate he is gradually moving up and I am TORN! Ahhhhhh!

There are soooo many things I can rant, vent, babble on and on about this series thus far but until you have read it I'm keeping my mouth SHUT because any new reader to this series needs to experience the true journey of this read. You will be thank me you did. ;) I won't be sorry on the book hangover it will leave you though. :D ~ Cristina, ★★★★★ 5 stars

*************************

Having read Combative, I was eagerly anticipating it's follow up book Redemptive. What I wasn't expecting was a whole new twist on the story and I definitely wasn't expecting Nate DeLuca!!

Redemptive is very different from her previous books and I'm freaking loving it! The whole mafia storyline is intricately woven into a story surrounding two lost lonely souls, Bailey & Nate. I like to think I've a couple of book boyfriends, but Nate DeLuca has captivated my fragile heart. He's everything! I also really enjoyed the friendship between Nate & Tiny. He's loyalty knows no bounds.

This is a devastatingly beautifully written sequel & once again I applaud Ms. McLean's ability to reach in and rip out my heart!

Honestly going into Redemptive I thought We would get more answers but instead I was left with so many questions! This is not a bad thing at all. I know Jay Mclean and I can bet the final book in the series will kick my ass.

I need book three ASAP!!!!! I would hugely recommend this series to everyone. Jay never disappoints & all things batman, she didn't this time either. <3 <3 <3 ~ Joanna, ★★★★★ 5 stars

*************************

This is a reaction I was not expecting at all from this series. I don't know why, but I didn't see this coming. I should've known somehow. Yet here I am, crying big, fat tears. My heart shattered, lying in broken pieces on the floor. And Nate DeLuca completely owning me.

I thought that this would answer a ton of my questions and shed some light on what happens after that heart-stopping cliffhanger at the end of Combative. But no, we don't. Instead, we get a tale of two characters—two broken souls who slowly found their refuge and solace in each other. I was completely blindsided—and I don't mean that in a bad way—but these characters just had me wrapped up tight around their precious fingers right off the bat. And I let them. I let them take it—take me.

“If you ask him to, he’ll risk his life to let you go because he loves you that fuckin’ much. But if he lets you go, Bailey, you’ll take his heart with you.”

Watch out Kyler Parker, Nate DeLuca is most definitely giving you a run for your money. If you thought Ky in Combative was great? Huh, well you've seen nothing yet. Nothing. Because Nate DeLuca is everything and then some. He's that perfectly imperfect guy who'd weaken your knees, make you crave him body and soul, and leave his mark deep in your bones. I was totally blown away by this man. His love and passion was so powerful and tremendous that even I got knocked on my bum. His words cut deep and will utterly slay you. He, without a doubt, broke me—all of me. And proof of that are the tears still lingering on my eyes while I type up this review, which I really hope will do the book justice.

“I feel your pain. I live your fear.”

Bailey, on the other hand, ignited a fire in me. She gave me this hope at the beginning that people are given second chances, no matter what. And when you're given that? Grab it with everything you've got with both of your hands and try your damnedest not to ever let go. She's so strong and brave and she tried her hardest to cope with what was going on around her the best way she could. She had a lot of fight in her, but it was only a matter of time. It almost always is. Bailey was so easy to relate to, to feel everything she's feeling and see what's going on in her head. After you read this book, you'd be astounded and impressed with this girl.

I'm in love with how Jay McLean chose to lay out this story, this series actually. It's all so refreshing yet at the same time it's mind-blowing and still heart-stopping. It's a story that'll have you feeling the lingering effects even days after. This is one of those books where every time you remember it, you'd suddenly feel the rush of emotions just like when you first read it. And again, this wasn't at all what I expected from a second book in a series. Now I'm left to wallow on my own while I try and fit the pieces of the puzzle together—from the ones I got from Combative and then from Redemptive. Just like what I said in the first book, more so now after reading this, the story will tear you apart—limb by limb. And all you're left with in the end is another bunch of questions, the loudest being HOW? and WHY?

Jay McLean's words woven together just pack such a powerful punch to the gut every single time. And now I'm dying for more of it. ~ Renery, ★★★★★ 5 stars

*************************

When I started this book I was ready for it to pick up from where Combative ended and oh boy was I pleasantly surprised. I was surprised to find out I was going to learn more about Nate DeLuca and Bailey. All I can say is WOW! I couldn't put it down and was so I love with their story and Nate! I loved Ky Parker and I never thought I could view Nate the way I do now and I truly want to see a HEA for Nate & Bailey.

The emotions Jay had me feeling were epic and the style was so different form anything I've read by Jay & I gotta say she did it again and I loved every minute of this book and the ending O M G!!!!!!!! I am dying and NEED book 3 sooooooo bad!!!! I have so many questions and am creating so many ideas in my head! But all in all this book was a 5 star read and I highly recommend it! ~ Stacey, ★★★★★ 5 stars

WOW!!! Redemptive just completely blew me away! I was so invested while reading Combative but even more so with book 2.

Something about Bailey and Nate's connection took me by surprise and I was totally enthralled by them. A vulnerable Nate, an open Nate, a Nate that lets you in is impossible to look away from but also dangerous in his line of work.

Bailey.....what a survivor. I didn't quite understand her at first but the more I got to know her, the more I fell in love. So many things came to light in Redemptive. I wasn’t sure which way this roller coaster ride was going and although I still have some major questions I can't deny how supremely amazing this story is on so many levels.

I'm kind of scared to start Destructive but here I go.....

6 I CAN’T CATCH MY BREATH STARS!!!! WTH just happened here??? I NEED MORE!!!!

“It’s said that your life flashes before your eyes when you die. It must only happen to those whose lives were worthy. Clearly, mine was not.”

Before I even begin to process my review here you need to take note, if you have not yet read Combative, you MUST, before you begin Redemptive! These books are NOT standalones and you will be 100% lost if you attempt to read them out of order!

Before I even attempted to begin Redemptive, I went back and did a complete re-read of Combative, and I’m extremely happy that I did. When I began Redemptive though, I was a bit confused for the first few pages, as I didn’t understand why we were beginning where we were… The massive cliff-hanger that ended Combative meant that we were due some answers right??? WRONG!!! Never under estimate the brilliantly devious mind of Jay McLean. She does things her own way and the minute you begin to think you know where she is headed with her stories, she flips it over and goes in the different direction. The path that this story follows is honestly one that I had never even considered. This is why in the beginning I was a bit confused, but that being said once I sunk into this book I could not put it down. This isn’t unusual for me, I tend to be consumed by an amazing story but when I pick up one of Jay’s books it’s truly 10 times worse.

“I guess some things are greater than the fears we hold on to.”

I’m not going to go into detail about the story line or the characters in this review, simply because this book needs to be read without having any preconceived notions. Therefore this review will be 100% spoiler free.

“He owed me nothing. And I owed him my life.”

Jay McLean has been one of my favorite authors for what seems like forever now. I read More than This shortly after it released and I have read everything that she has published since. She is an auto click author for me simply because she never fails to deliver. Every book that she writes is pure magic. I open the pages and lose myself in the worlds she creates and the characters she brings to life. Combative and Redemptive are very different from the previous books that she has written, but that in no way makes them any less amazing. This series is a bit darker and each book gets more intense. Redemptive kept me guessing the whole way through; that being said when I reached the end I was positive I was missing pages. I mean she couldn’t possibly leave us all hanging like that again!!!! Could she??? OH YES SHE DID!!!! I wanted to launch my kindle across the room!!!! MASSSIVE CLIFFY LADIES!!!! I thought that this book would give me answers to all of the questions that I had when I finished Combative and that was my mistake, Redemptive does provide some answers but I found that when I was finished I had even more questions than I began with. *SIGH*

Jay McLean continues to prove time and time again that she is a master storyteller and with this book I found myself once again totally absorbed in the story and enamoured with the characters, even the ones that I hated in the previous book. My emotions ran completely amuck the further I read, and I found myself questioning everything. The web that has now been spun is intriguing to the point that you are unable to break away. I devoured it, I’m actually tempted to go back and read it all over again, and I just finished it. There will be a third book, that is confirmed and I could not be happier, because at this point I just need MORE! Jay McLean has once again done what seems impossible, she outdid herself… again! Each book that she writes is better than the last and up until today I would have sworn that she could not possibly top More than Enough but she did. Redemptive is, in my opinion the best piece of writing that she has ever created. I am so incredibly conflicted about so many things after reading Redemptive, but there is no question that it is a stellar piece of writing. Anything that evokes the types of feelings and thoughts that I had while I was reading, needs to commended. *STANDING OVATION OVER HERE*

I cannot wait to get my hands on book 3, and I pray that the release date is set soon; I cannot possibly wait another year. I NEED MORE AND I NEED IT NOW!!!!! Readers beware, this ride is about to get even wilder than you could have ever imagined.

5.0 "BAILEY AND HICKORY" STARS!!!

"IT’S SAID THAT your life flashes before your eyes when you die. It must only happen to those whose lives were worthy. Clearly, mine was not."

It's really not often when I'm at lost for words after I read a book. Those lingering thoughts that somehow became a part of you because you aren't done with it yet or just simply because it's more than good that even if you kept on re-reading it, you really just can't get enough.

Redemptive is that kind of book to me. After reading Combative and was thrown with that huge cliffhanger I was so eager to read the next installment. I was so intrigued that I readily jumped reading it and seriously it's more than what I expect. In fact, I never saw it coming. I thought because it was the second book, my questions will be answered...I thought I know it all...but damn! I was sooooo wrong. I was still kept in the dark and was like "whoa!this series keeps getting better and better" and I'm more than intrigued.

Jay McLean just delivered a fast paced...gut wrenching...suspenseful and intense story worthy to read..worthy to keep awake in the wee hours because when you keep your hands on it you'll be invested and you'll gonna hesitate to put it down. The plot was more than just amazing. It was written flawlessly and up to this time I was still in awe. The feels reading this is unexplainable. What Combative lacks that readers wanted, this book has it. That undeniable chemistry and connection between the characters...that more vivid description...that more intense scenes...and oh for the love of all holy....that scenes with Bailey and Nate de Luca...whoaah... I was like, Ky who???

"Bailey had become my drug. My addiction. My escape. My salvation. My curious fascination turned obsessive infatuation."

Holy shit! It's more than just a twist and turn of the story and I wanted more. That ending had me wanting to strangle someone because I don't want it to end and I was so desperate.

Overall, this story is highly recommended and to understand fully the events Combative must be read first. Trust me, Jay McLean will give you another beautiful ride that will keep you wanting for more.

5 Just Shoot Me Stars

I love Jay McLean. She is awesome. Such a creative mind. But then I read Redemptive.....

Ms McLean has been known to leave us hanging before. She likes to play with the readers emotions. She writes funny, touching, suspenseful....and now she has crossed a line. She has gone straight to evil. Evil genius but evil none the less.

Warning: This is the second book in the series. You don't have to read the first for this one to make sense but it would be slightly helpful.

Bailey is living on the streets. She is used to being cold, hungry and unsafe. She thinks things can't get much worse. She is so wrong. SO wrong.

"I won't hurt you...You're safe. It's over"....It wasn't over. It hadn't even begun.

Bailey gets herself into a situation. One you hope someone will rescue her from. And someone does. Nate. But rescue is not really the term that applies here. Not for Bailey. Not for Nate.

Why won't she let me save her?

Nate and Bailey are thrown together in a situation that is more than dangerous for both of them. Decisions are made in the heat of the moment. Decisions that will hurt them both. Life altering.

You make me forget what my life is and who I'm supposed to be. You make me happy, Bailey.

Redemptive is the story who you trust when you have no one left to trust. The trust born of desperation. A trust born in the dark.

You know I don't do spoilers, so let me just say they Ms McLean has give us a story that will blow your mind. You don't even know where to go or what to do when it ends. Ms McLean leaves you hanging. On the edge. Of the cliff. And all you can hear is her evil Ozzie laugh in the background.
