IACET
Congressman Donald Beyer Jr. (VA-08) has asked for IACET's input and assistance in promoting a bill that would allow individuals providing adult education the same above-the-line deduction as is allowed for expenses of elementary and secondary school teachers. To view the complete bill, link here.
IACET's leadership is requesting members complete this very brief survey to express their support or opposition of the bill.
As the global defacto ANSI accredited standard for professional education and training, IACET is appreciative of Congressman Beyer seeking our input prior to filling the bill as early as next year. Take the survey.
Take the survey and be entered into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card.

Association Now
Research shows that credentials are valuable to associations. A survey of 228 association leaders and credentialing representatives found, for example, that roughly 95 percent reported that a credential provides some benefit to their organizations when it comes to reinforcing its values. The study from the ASAE Foundation and North Carolina State University's Institute for Nonprofits also found that additional benefits of a credential can include promotion of ethical conduct, safeguarding the public, and increased prestige and a competitive advantage for credential holders, depending on the industry.

Massive open online courses saw great growth in 2015, and according to new data from Reportlinker, more demand for this affordable education option means more growth. Driven by increased platform connectivity and device-based computing adoption, as well as the emergence of online and collaborative learning and technology personalization, Reportlinker estimates the MOOC market to grow by nearly $7 billion by 2020.

The world's most popular online course is a general introduction to the art of learning, taught jointly by an educator and a neuroscientist. "Learning How To Learn," which was created by Barbara Oakley, an electrical engineer, and Terry Sejnowski, a neuroscientist, has been ranked as the leading class by enrollment in a survey of the 50 largest online courses released earlier this month by the Online Course Report website.

Organizational learning is becoming increasingly essential for businesses to remain competitive in today's global, fast-paced reality. Ensuring that employees maintain competence in their field of practice assists workplaces in staying proficient amid constant change. Businesses in the coatings industry are no exception to this rule. We live in an era of constant change and, consequently, the need for constant learning. Simply communicating and completing daily tasks require the most current knowledge of how people and businesses are accessible.

The Tennessean
Gov. Bill Haslam has talked for months about the need to get more adults into Tennessee colleges, and the state is putting that message on billboards and TV screens across the state. The advertising is part of a $1 million push to encourage adults with some college credits to return to campus to earn their degrees.

Brian Kreissl, a contributor for Canadian HRReporter, writes: "I have mentioned a few times how there is a growing backlash against formal education nowadays. With the high cost of tuition, the lacklustre job market for post-secondary graduates, the popularity of skilled trades and STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the rise of massive open online courses, e-Learning platforms, video-sharing sites such as YouTube, Wikipedia, instructional books, online forums, discussion boards and coding academies/boot camps, many people are starting to advocate foregoing college or university altogether in the pursuit of practical knowledge and skills."

The Associations
As the new year begins and we all turn our attention back to work, it may be a good time to take a closer look at how your organization approaches its online learning (a.k.a. e-Learning or eLearning) offerings. Despite the (often significant) impact of online educational programs on an association's mission, member value, and non-dues revenue, such efforts are often underfunded and understaffed. Business proceeds as usual; after all, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

We instructional designers hope that the learning experiences we create will garner similar reactions from our learners. Now, Adam McKay is not an instructional designer by trade. He's a film director and screenwriter. Nevertheless, The Big Short adopts some pretty solid instructional design principles. Here's a brief analysis of each and some ideas about how to use similar strategies to make Oscar-worthy training.

If you'd asked farmers a few hundred years ago what skills their kids would need to thrive, it wouldn't have taken long to answer. They'd need to know how to milk a cow or plant a field. General skills for a single profession that only changed slowly — and this is how it was for most humans through history.

Chief Learning Officer (commentary)
Bob Mosher, a contributor for Chief Learning Officer, writes: "I've always been tickled by our industry's obsession with buzzwords and trends. There have been many in my 30-plus years in this industry. My one pet peeve with all this is that we often 'brand' first and 'define and refine' second. This has gotten us into trouble a few times. Setting expectations and boundaries for learning efforts too early can slow down adoption and inhibit growth. Many a great idea or method has taken way too long to develop because we jumped to an early assumption regarding its preferred or most effective format."

In some cultural training sessions — particularly in North America — a number of participants find the whole idea of our ways of thinking and behaviors being significantly influenced by cultural context uncomfortable. They might intellectually grasp the idea in the abstract, but fail to recognize the depth of the influence, particularly on themselves. North American culture, of course, is driven by the belief of individual self-determination and independence from others. The idea of being shaped by external or even internal forces doesn't sit well (just look at badly we treat the mentally ill).
