Mapping the Most Dangerous Intersections in Los Angeles

Los Angeles's streets are useful, but potentially very dangerous, and car crashes hit some streets more than others—pedestrians are at a much higher risk of being involved in a collision at some LA crossings than others. Where are these hubs of peril? LA Weekly spotted a rundown on DataScience that names a Westside intersection near Dockweiler State Beach as the most treacherous for car crashes.

For their analysis, DataScience used numbers from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System that span from November 2014 to October 2015. Taking into consideration all the crashes that occur in LA (including those involving pedestrians and people on bikes), motorists are at fault in 41 percent. 31 percent of the time, pedestrians are at fault, but bike riders are the cause of the crash in fewer than 1 percent of accidents, DataScience found.

So those are the worst places in terms of general crashes, but what about the most hazardous places to be on foot specifically? It's probably not a huge surprise that the winner of that title is the intersection at Hollywood and Highland, but hopefully this is the last year it will be anywhere near any list about dangerous crossings—last month, the intersection got a new scramble crosswalk that's intended to help pedestrians move more safely through the crowded crossing. The scramble crosswalk allows pedestrians to cross the intersection all at once and in every direction, including diagonally, so it's less likely they'll be competing with cars.
