Flexible display technology has been in development for years, but these days the closest thing you can get to a smartphone with a truly flexible display is one with curved edges.

But one day you may actually be able to buy a phone that bends… and to use that feature to interact with apps.

Researchers at the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University in Canada are showing off a prototype of a new flexible display solution called ReFlex.

It lets you do things like flip through pages of a virtual book: press the right side and pages flip from right-to-left, as if you were thumbing through the pages of a a book.

The technology can adjust the speed of the page flipping depending on how much pressure you’re applying.

The FeFlex prototype uses an LG Flexible OLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and the screen is powered by an Android computer built into the side of the screen.

While this is an early prototype, Human Media Lab director Roel Vertegaal says he thinks this type of technology will be ready for consumers within the next 5 years.
