Consumers expect companies to respect the right to privacy. This means respecting the privacy of users by providing clear, accessible information about how personal data is used, rather than unintelligible terms and conditions. This means companies that handle data should not hand over this information to governments without a proper judicial order. This means companies should adopt strong encryption standards to protect personal data and be transparent about their security practices.  Salil Shetty, Secretary General of Amnesty International, will engage these issues, among others, through the lens of the right to privacy. The event will be moderated by Jennifer Granick, Director of Civil Liberties, Center for Internet and Society.

Salil Shetty joined Amnesty International as the organization’s eighth Secretary General in 2010. A long-term activist on poverty and justice, Shetty leads the movement’s global work to end human rights violations and has spearheaded a significant move of AI’s work to the global south. He preciously served as Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign, and was credited with significantly increasing awareness of and accountability for the MDGs.
