NCAA DIII Cross Country Team Academic Awards – 2015

NEW ORLEANS — A team is only as good as the sum of its parts.

This past cross country season, everything fired on all cylinders for the UW-Eau Claire men and the Williams College women — especially in Winneconne, Wisconsin.

PAST WINNERS

MEN
2014: North Central (Ill.)
2013: St. Olaf
2012: Calvin
2011: Haverford
2010: Haverford
2009: Williams
2008: Williams
2007: Haverford
2006: Calvin

It was at the 2015 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships where the Blugolds and Ephs stepped up and won their gender’s respective national titles.

Fast forward three months and UW-Eau Claire and Williams are picking up a new batch of hardware. On Friday, the Blugolds and Ephs were named the NCAA Division III Scholar Teams of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Want to know how strong of a contender Williams was for this award? The Ephs had seven student-athletes named All-Academic. That’s an entire varsity team.

In order for a team to be deemed the Scholar Team of the Year, it must meet two criteria — finish highly at NCAAs (read: top-10 or better) and have a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or better. UW-Eau Claire and Williams had respective GPAs of 3.32 and 3.58.

PAST WINNERS

WOMEN
2014: Johns Hopkins
2013: Johns Hopkins
2012: Johns Hopkins
2011: Washington (Mo.)
2010: Middlebury
2009: UW-Eau Claire
2008: Middlebury
2007: Amherst
2006: Middlebury

Overall, there were 207 women’s teams that finished the semester with GPAs of 3.1 or better. In fact, the team with the top GPA was that of the University of Dubuque (3.739).

Other than Williams, there was one other program with seven All-Academic honorees — Hope College. Thirteen teams hauled in six honors.

For the men, there were 151 teams with GPAs of 3.1 or better and Ithaca College (3.697) edged MIT (3.67) and Pricipia College (3.67) for highest team GPA.

No men’s team had seven All-Academic honorees, but four had six — Bates College, Tufts University, the University of Chicago and Williams College.

See below for a closer look at all of those teams that earned All-Academic honors.
