Egypt's military spokesman said on Wednesday (July 1) the situation in North Sinai was "100 percent under control," following clashes with militants that left more than 100 people dead.
The spokesman, Mohamed Samir, was speaking by phone to state television.

"The latest developments are that the situation on the ground is completely 100 percent under control. The toll for our heroic martyrs today are 17 martyrs and the number of terrorists killed was near to reaching 100 dead. Thank God, the forces on the ground are completely under control and everything is under control," he said.
Samir added that some other militants were in captivity and under interrogation.
Egyptian state television broadcast images of the bodies of the militants who were killed in the attack.
Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate, Sinai Province, had claimed responsibility for attacks on more than 15 security sites in one of the deadliest militant attacks in the country's recent memory.
The militants' assault, a significant escalation in violence in the peninsula that lies between Israel, the Gaza Strip and the Suez Canal, was the second high-profile attack in Egypt this week. On Monday (June 29), a bomb killed the prosecutor-general in Cairo.
It raised questions about the government's ability to contain an insurgency that has already killed hundreds of police and soldiers.
The insurgents want to topple the Cairo government and have stepped up their campaign since 2013, when then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi removed President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood after mass protests against his rule.
