Well, now we know why Game of Thrones‘ Melisandre likes to drop her robe so much.
Think about it: If you were a zillion-year-old woman using mystical jewelry to fool people into thinking you were a powerful, if a bit nutty, young hottie, wouldn’t you want to show off the goods as often as possible?
Yep, as the Red Woman prepares for bed at the end of the HBO drama’s sixth season premiere, she removes all her clothing and her ever-present necklace… and we soon see that she’s actually an ancient crone.
We also get a definitive answer to whether or not Jon Snow is among the living — as we were warned, he is not — as well as to the question I’m sure you’ve been asking yourselves since the Season 5 finale: “What have the Sand Snakes been up to?” Just kidding; Bronn is the only person alive who’s been wondering about those naughty ladies.
Read on for more of what goes down in “The Red Woman.”
THE MEN OF THE WALL | Ghost lets out a long, mournful howl, and many of us are right there with him, because Jon Snow is very dead. Davos finds the body of the Lord Commander, who has succumbed to his multiple stab wounds and is lying in a pile of bloody slush, and has a few of Jon’s friends help carry him to his quarters. Meanwhile, Melisandre wonders how she could’ve possibly been so wrong about what her visions foretold. “I saw him in the flames, fighting at Winterfell,” she says, brushing his cold cheek with her hand. “I cannot speak for the flames,” Davos replies, “but he’s gone.”
It’s immediately clear to the men that only one Night’s Watch “brother” — and I used that term very loosely — could have masterminded Snow job: Alliser Thorne. The man in question argues to the rest of the brotherhood that Jon was going to disband the Night’s Watch. “He thrust a terrible choice upon us, and we made it,” he says, defending his actions.
Not much later, Thorne knocks at the door, demanding that Jon’s friends surrender by nightfall and promising amnesty if they do (and that Davos will be able to leave Castle Black as a free man.)
Given that Thorne has the face of a used car salesman behind on child support payments, none of the men believe him — and the idea of killing the traitor quickly becomes very popular. But they’re heavily outnumbered, and when Dolorous Edd is your best bet, you’re pretty screwed, indeed. Hold up, Davos says, what about asking Melisandre for help? The men scoff, but Davos has seen some stuff, and he maintains that Stannis’ mistress is the way to go.
Cut to the aforementioned bedtime scene, in which the Red Woman stands before a looking glass, slips out of her robes, and then removes the choker she always wears. The result: Think a female Gollum with osteoporosis, all wispy white hair and sagging… everything. Also, she looks really sad as she climbs into bed.
HOUSE BOLTON | We open on Ramsay standing over Myranda’s corpse, eulogizing her with a long, stirring speech (sample quote, “she smelled of dog”) about how he’ll avenge her death. “Your pain will be paid for a thousand times over,” he swears… and then tells the maester to dispose of her body by feeding her to the dogs. (Heh.)
Roose informs his son that he’s simultaneously proud of him for besting Stannis in battle and disappointed in him for losing Sansa, their biggest advantage in negotiations to come. The North “won’t back us without Sansa Stark. We no longer have Sansa Stark,” Roose reminds him. But the shamed younger Bolton assures his father that he’s got his dogs and a team after the missing pair. Still Roose, subtly threatens his bastard son by bringing up the point that without Sansa, Ramsay won’t produce an heir. And the maesters say that Lady Walda’s probably going to drop a male baby sometime very soon…
In the frigid lands around Winterfell, Theon tries to divert the hellhounds from finding Sansa, but it doesn’t work. However, the duo is saved at the very last minute by… Brienne and Pod! Hi guys! I missed you most. Theon jumps into the fray at the end, helping to kill the last of Ramsay’s men, and then the knight once again pledges her services to Catelyn’s older daughter. This time, the redhead gratefully accepts them. (Side note: I loved Pod prompting Sansa in the correct wording of the vow accepting Brienne’s promise of protection.)
HOUSE LANNISTER | A grieving Jaime brings Myrcella back to King’s Landing. But since Cersei’s walk of atonement (or, rather, “Shame!”), Jaime’s twin isn’t the feisty woman he left behind, so she doesn’t have the reaction he expects when he gives her the bad news about their daughter. Hearing about the poisoning only convinces her that the prophecy she heard as a child is coming true; as such, she accepts that “three golden shrouds” fate with a defeated resignation that, unlike her slightly grown-out short hair, isn’t a good look on her. But Handsome McGoldhand has news for her: “F—k prophecy. F—k fate. F—k everyone who isn’t us,” he says, bucking her up and promising to take back everything that has been taken from them.
And unbeknownst to either of them, far away in Dorne, Ellaria Sand seems to have made her peace with Prince Doran. Then she kills him with a knife. The last name on the sickly monarch’s lips? That of his son, Trystane… who finds himself with a Sand Snake spear through the forehead on the boat in King’s Landing harbor. “Your son is weak, just like you, and weak men will never rule Dorne again,” Ellaria tells a dying Doran.
HOUSE TYRELL | A very dirty Margaery, still in the High Sparrow’s jail, demands to see her brother. “Sinners don’t make demands. They make confessions,” the septa informs her. They’re interrupted by the holy man himself, who also encourages her to ‘fess up her sins. She refuses. “You have started down a path, but you have many miles to go,” he says mysteriously, leaving her in her filthy cell.
HOUSE TARGARYEN | While Tyrion and Varys try to figure out how to return an absent Daenerys to the people’s favor in Mereen, and while an increasingly greyscaled Jorah and Daario search for the missing Mother of Dragons (but find only her ring), Dany herself has been swept up by a massive khalasar. She’s brought to the leader, Khal Moro, who intends to make her his mare (if you know what I mean). But when she tells him absolutely not in Dothraki, he soon realizes that she’s the widow of Kahl Drogo and therefore should be treated like a divine creature.
She assumes that means she gets to leave. Dany, would a people who made you eat a horse heart as if it were an apple make things that easy for you this time around? Nope, she’s being sent to a holy temple where all khaleesi live out their days after their husbands’ deaths. Drogon, take the wheel!
HOUSE STARK: FLYING BLIND EDITION | When we catch up with Arya, she’s still blind and getting by as a beggar in the streets of Braavos. (Side note: Her eyes really creeped me out. Anyone else?) The Waif stops by to mess with her aka train her by beating her with a stick. Sadly, it’s one of the most caring things that happens all episode.
Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the premiere? Grade it via the poll below, then elaborate in the comments!
It was… Fine, I guess. Not worth the build up. •shrugs•
Too choppy. I can understand the show wanting to catch us up on all the major issues left from last season’s cliffhanger, but there was too many plot lines in too little time–why HBO limited this episode to less than 50 minutes is bewildering. The reveal of Melisandra was not that shocking–seeing my grandma naked when I was around 4 years old–now, that was shocking. I really don’t need a Dorne plot–obviously this is the worst feminist representation ever, and I think Sand Snakes should become hiss-tory from upcoming episodes.
Kiss of fire. melisandre can bring jon back stilll. come on do your Song of ice and fire research boys
But that doesn’t REALLY bring someone back. It’s not a good enough existence for Jon.
I was like “Oh look Melisandre getting naked agai- WHAT THE F IS THAT?”
Thank the old gods and the new for Brienne and Pod. If not for them the entire episode would have been tragedy after tragedy. I’m still (naively?) holding out hope that Jon will be resurrected somehow, but overall this ep was really depressing.
Liked it. I do feel like it should have been two hours/episodes as it was a lot of setup and little payoff, like most of their premieres… Well, next week looks a lot better.
Hopefully folks will start to accept that Snow is really dead and isn’t coming back.
Until they show Jon’s body burning in a pyre to prevent his rising as a White Walker, he’s NOT dead. No matter what the show says. And maybe not even then, if he really is a warg.
This. It ain’t over until he’s ash. :)
Actually he’s quite dead. They showed his corpse in the episode. Did you not watch? Of course being dead doesn’t mean he can’t be brought back to life, but that doesn’t change the fact that at the present he is quite dead.
even if he’s a warg it’s still not even then, because if he’s really a Targaryen he won’t burn.
Not exactly Shiraz – not all Targaryen walk through fire and come out to tell the story. Viserys was Targaryen – he wasn’t “blood of the dragon.” There was another nutty Targaryen king that was convinced he was fire-impervious and died drinking wildffire.
for all we know, he could be dead the hole of season 6 and then rise for season 7
Melisandre should have more faith in her vision. I just hope that Davos avenges Shireen before it comes to pass, though, and that she has nothing to do with the resurrection—don’t want her getting the credit/satisfaction. There’s an amazing scenario with the funeral pyre that I’m really hoping for instead.
No. These folks are gonna live in denial even after the series finale. Ned Stark never came back, why is it so hard for them to accept this?
Ned’s head was removed, Jon’s body is largely intact and he has a red priestess in the building
Ned Stark was beheaded. Jon is still perfectly intact. Besides, none of us are saying EVERY character has to come back from the dead. There is, however, a precedent for characters being brought back to life by the Red Priests. This happens both in the TV series AND in the books. Remember Beric Dondarrion from season 3? He came back from the dead several times. Yes, there’s a price to pay for that, but it CAN be done. With Melisandre at Castle Black, I think many fans are following the same train of thought: She has the ability to bring him back but WILL she?
Because in both books and show there is enough foreshadowing that a) characters can be resurrected and b) Jon will be one of them.
Didn’t get the Jon Snow revival I was hoping for….yet, but it was still awesome. Happy it’s back. As for the Melisandre, yikes my eyes! lol
Amazing start to the season. This episode did not disappoint…
Biggest WTF moment was the Red Woman…dang that blood magic is powerful!
Loved the confirmation that Stannis is dead..
Where to now for Sansa & Brianne?
Can’t wait to see the Wildings defend Jon’s body against those traitorous nightswatch men.
I do also think Ser Davos will get that wildling guy w the red beard and get the rest of the others to help them kick Alliser Thorne and half of those crows assess!
I can’t wait to see what Wun Wun ( giant ) does to them, lol I’m hoping Ollie meets an especially spectacular end… Lol. That little F’er killed Ygrite and betrayed and killed Jon. F Ollie
YES Phoenix! For me too it is Olly most of all I long to see meet a spectacular end. After that it’s the ridiculous “confess!” septa who kept hitting Cersei with the ladle. You just knew when Cersei vowed vengeance it’s going to happen.
That Red Lady is a OLD GEEZER!! Hahaha what the hell?As for the Jon situation I think this one is going to be played out I HOPE so that bitch better bring him back to life or somewhat form of life. The opening scene of Ghost howling I felt like crying! Overall the episode was alright.
How long of a wait for that b.s…. Producers are just toying with the audience… So pissed off right now
They said all along “Jon Snow is dead” so I don’t think it’s the producers to blame but maybe you’re expectations
Pretty sure Jon Snow is “the fire and ice” saga… r +l = j theory.. Only character in entire series that makes sense to
I agree that Jon’s story isn’t over and dead doesn’t mean dead. I also think that there were multiple threads to gather up this episode. The Jon thread needs to develop and be done well. To do that tonight, we’d have idea where Sansa ended up or how Dany was doing or what Kings landing was screwing up. It’s on it’s way. We’ll get there.
R+L = J doesn’t nessecarily make J = TPTWP game of thrones is always good for a fakeout or 2
Lol. Toy? I don’t. Blame them, I’d exploit this mass denial to my benefit as well. He’s gone. Money on. If his body is reanimated, it won’t be Jon Snow, what aren’t ppl getting?
Beric Dondarrion is basically the same after his resurrection
What are you talking about? All they have said the entire time is that Jon is dead. They actually were emphatic about it. You are the one that didn’t listen.
What was the point of GRRM making a big deal of John’s heritage if they only kill him off? Hated this episode. Except for Brienne & Pod. Missed them!
Eh, the Wall had maybe 10 minutes of screen time and part of that was Melisandra’s reveal. Dead Snow tonight still doesn’t mean he isn’t resurrected. I get past episode three and he’s still a corpse or he ends up on a pyre, I’ll accept he’s gone for good. The blood stain under Jon looked like a dragon. With the Tower of Joy on the horizon….I still think Jon’s story isn’t done yet. In other Stark news, I might have literally yelped and then cried when Brienne showed up. You had one job, Brienne, thanks for finally doing it. ;)
Well, now we need a helluva backstory on Melisandre and why her real age and necklace’s powers are relevant.
Not a lot to say about the premiere, which isn’t what I should be saying. I think it needed MORE, even with the twist, if that makes sense, but glad the show is back.
I did really love Dany’s sequence though. The Snakes and their mother are nothing but snakes in the most repugnant way possible, and I hope whatever this lesson is actually teaches Arya some humility.
If want they to explain Melassndra properly, they will have to go to As’shai or Et Ti. That’s the lands beyond the Grasslands, if you remember Jorge referenced shadow cats and dragons in season 2 I think. And Tyrion or Balish referenced a boat from that side of the world…. But I have a feeling they are ripping us fans off and trying to explain it without simply other priestesses like her.
I’m just wondering, did Benioff and Weiss actually write this, or did they just look for the worst crack fic they could possibly find and use the obscene budget HBO undeservedly tosses at them to film it.
Disappointed that Jon wasn’t resurrected but I’m not going to give up hope yet. If he stays dead, that may be the deal breaker for me. Oh my!!! Felt like covering my eyes when Melisandre did her reveal. Glad to see Brienne and Pod back and that Sansa finally had something to go right. Can’t wait to see how the Snakes and Lannisters settle their score.
well well well… a lot of interesting stuff packed into the hour.. Melisandre’s “Gollum” changeling was in tune with her character, and Arya was good, time for Sansa to come to the forefront, and Davos is much needed, and something to happen with Tyrion… ahhh…
Melisandre may be doubting her visions but that doesn’t mean they won’t yet come to pass. I think the question is less about whether Jon Snow comes back and more about how.
I always thought Jon Snow was the ice to Daenerys fire. I’m not convinced he’s dead, dead… But he may not be “Jon Snow” again.
.
I liked the episode, it was well balanced. Glad it’s back.
Okay episode, if mostly for just checking in and setting the rails on where the plot goes from here. It is nice to have Sansa and Brienne united with two men that, between them, are about as well hung as two average men (I decided to write the very safe version of that despite what show we’re talking about). An apparent coup in Dorne is interesting, I suppose, though not entirely clear on what effect it’ll have on the larger plot at this point, aside from perhaps the Sands planning to infiltrate King’s Landing and go after the Lannisters. Also nice to know what’s happening with Dany. Melisandre’s reveal was interesting, definitely a solid shocker moment.
“Trystane Martell ..is with them on the boat, and Jaime cautions him to stay there……”
I don’t recall this at all. Was it actually in the episode?
My bad. Fixed! — KR
Can anyone explain to me how the two Sand Snakes ended up on the boat with Trystane that’s at King’s Landing? At the end of last season, as Jaime’s boat sailed away with Myrcella and Trystane, the Sand Snakes were seen remaining ashore in Dorne with Ellaria.
–
Did I miss something? When did they get on the boat? The boat is docked at King’s Landing and not at Dorne — which isn’t just a stroll away — so how/when did the two Sand Snakes get from Dorne to the boat? Are we just supposed to assume the Snakes followed on their own at some intervening point and boarded the boat with no one noticing?
I want to know as well. Last I saw they were in Dorne and Trystane was on the boat which docked at King’s Landing. That is huge plot hole that should not happen again.
Bold prediction: As they are bringing Dany to temple, and things are looking most dire for her… SHE’S SAVED BY HER FRIGGING DRAGONS AGAIN!!
Love this show, but I’m very disappointed already in the pace of this season. It’s shorter scenes than usual, and more hopping around the world. It’s like the showrunners are trying to make it a shorter series, like they mentioned, and that’s disrespectful to your fan base. Not happy! But staying hopeful since this is my favourite series.
I’m hoping this episode was just checking up on each plot point from last season and showing us how our theories played out, a little anyway.
The best season of the show was the first one because it stuck to the books. That hooked the audience who has remained loyal if a little more disappointed each season that goes by without any of the big book payoffs except for the Red Wedding. When it veers so far away from the book material it fails. The best parts of the Dorne subplot were excised, which in my opinion is a crying shame. However, the best segments from last night’s opening episode were of Sansa and Theon escaping, then meeting up with Brienne and Pod, followed by the haunting scenes at the Wall. These made me want more, much more. Since the series is based on the books entitled A Song of Ice and Fire, this is what it’s all about. Ice and Fire, or Ice vs Fire, and this is where the focus should always be. Not on Kings Landing and the stupid stuff going on there, because seriously who cares? Dany’s story arc always should have been more compelling than it was after the first season, but since large parts of it were cut away (Quentyn Martell, Jon Connington, Young Griff, Arianne Martell) then that left the Dorne sub-plot empty and the remnants flapping in the wind. Dorne has been such a huge disappointment but it wasn’t that way in the books. It’s a shame.
I ended up watching the marathon for Season 5 before hand and found myself fast forwarding and skipping everything in King’s Landing and Dorne, and still feel like I didn’t miss much… Also turned 10 hours into about 6.5.. Basically I watched scenes with Starks, Dani and Tyrion.
Posted this before but will repeat here. On Game of Thrones Bran is a critical character but we didn’t see him at all for the whole of last season. I firmly believe that Jon Snow will be treated in a similar way. We’ll see his body. They’ll Weekend at Bernie’s him for a bit: possibly for most of the season. But we won’t see a living, breathing, talking Jon Snow this season. The final moments of the season will probably end with him opening his eyes.
The end of last season, all 4 sand snakes with Ellaria are on the dock watching the boat leave the harbor, feeling quite self congratulatory about having killed Myrcella but magically 2 of them catch up with the boat get on board and kill Trystane (wouldn’t have made a little more sense for Trystane to kiss his uncles former paramour goodbye as well), in the meantime Ellaria has somehow managed to turn the entire royal gaurd of Dorne into traitors. I know that the Dorne story line must be going somewhere, but really the lazy writing in every scene involving Dorne since Oberyn died is ridiculous and reflects badly on the rest of the plots that are well written. For one thing it makes absolutely no sense that the Dornish would support a bastard (Ellaria) over the royal family, but like Kermit I gues I will sip my tea and deal with the lack of believability in the hopes that the story line is resolved and the awful actors and writers involved won’t sully the screen for too much longer.
I just hope we don’t have to deal with the Sand Snakes in King’s Landing, and Ellaria’s coup just falls apart offscreen and we learn about it in dialogue.
