Small Girl Scout Makes BIG Difference

Thank you GSHNJ Brownie Girl Scout Olivia Mendez for seeing a need in the Belleville community and becoming an advocate for a local playground being rebuilt!

Two years ago, Olivia Mendez was a five-year-old Daisy Girl Scout who noticed that a local playground, which burnt down a few years ago, was not being rebuilt! As part of her Daisy Journey work, she wrote a series of letters to Mayor Ray Kimble about the importance of rebuilding this playground for the local kids to enjoy and even included illustrations of what she envisioned the new playground to look like.

Much to Olivia's surprise, Mayor Kimble read her letters and not only responded to thank the girl for her suggestions, but also approved renovations for the new playground –and of course, Olivia earned her daisy petals for the project.

Two years later, on Saturday, April 23rd, Olivia’s efforts were honored by cutting the ribbon at the playground grand re-opening. Because of Olivia, the neighborhood once again has a playground!

From all of us here at Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, we would like to thank Olivia and Troop #22912 for helping make our world a better place, and leaving a place better than when you found it!
