The High Rise #1

The Fighter

Rate this book
When I find out the hard-bodied, tattooed god from the gym lives down the hall from me you’d think I’d be thrilled, right?

Um, how about not.

Heath Noble, construction project manager, MMA fighter and resident hottie, seemed charming at first. But after introducing myself, it was all goodbye Mr. Nice Guy, hello Sir Jerkface.

I don’t know what his problem is but guys who look like him are usually jackholes anyway, so I’m out.

Except he won’t let me be out.

Now I'm sure he's hitting on me and I'm as confused as ever.

But I know people and I'm not fooled.

I've got to find out what his game is before the line between my suspicion and my attraction to him becomes blurred and I do something stupid like fall for him.

Because I’ve done stupid before and I’ve only ended up getting hurt.

~~

The minute I find out who Laney Kyle is I want her to pay for what the Kyles have put my family through.

I'm only here to get my brother out from under the Kyle's hold by fighting in an underground ring run by her family. And if I can take all the Kyles down while I'm at it, well, so much the better.

But I have to be smooth. And believe me, I’m all about being smooth.

Or so I thought.

She’s got me so tangled up I’m not sure what I’m doing anymore.

And by the time I realize she’s an innocent bystander, I know I’ve lost her.

Now I’m going to get her back.

But she’s not giving me the chance.

Two people plus one apartment building equals one big messy situation.

And love, as usual, will just make everything messier.

Welcome to the High Rise where tenants get a new lease on love...

This book was so freaking boring! The premise of the story sounded really good, but the execution was terrible. Heath was a total jerk and Laney was too forgiving of him throughout the whole book.

I can't believe I bought the book for $.99 when it should've been free.

This book was just okay for me. The characters lack depth and the plot wasn't fully developed--the ending was really rushed.

I'm not going to summarize the plot because the book's description captures it fairly well. Aside from a lack of development with said plot, I took issue with Laney's character. Laney "is done giving second chances" to jerks, players, etc. Yet, Heath runs hot and cold almost immediately--and is a jerk. Then, after almost kissing her, Laney sees him at the elevator, saying goodbye to a woman the following morning--one who clearly stayed the night and who he's clearly been intimate with--which implies a player. We see from Heath's POV that nothing went on with this woman, but Laney doesn't know that, and Heath shrugs off Laney's obvious annoyance stating something (to himself) like "I'm sure this looks bad, but she'll think what she wants to think." Twenty four hours later, Laney sleeps with him--without ever clarifying what the woman was doing there. He's pursuing her, and she's sworn off players--yet she jumps into bed with one despite him being a jerk to her and despite the evidence that suggests that he is a player. It felt like the writer either forgot about the "Jessica" plot development or was only half-heartedly developing Laney's character. Then, there's the whole male dialogue about the implication that Heath would sleep with Chastity if he knew his girlfriend wouldn't find out (that Laney overhears). He doesn't directly say this, but agrees with the statement--same thing. Laney's mad, rightfully so, but she puts up a weak fight. His explanation? "That's how guys talk when they drink." But it's when he tells her that he loves her that all is well again. Seriously? If I heard my boyfriend laughing with his friends about wanting to screw some chick at a party--and one who would if he knew he wouldn't get caught--it would take a hell of a lot more than an "I love you" to get my forgiveness. Along the lines of this issue: Laney is told that Heath cheated on her. The only discussion about this is essentially Heath saying "I didn't," and that's that, no further questions. We know he didn't cheat because of the dual POV, but Laney doesn't really know that. He had clearly lied to her over the course of their entire relationship, proving that he's a good liar. Again, a character who states that she's no longer giving second chances hardly puts up a fight and not only gives Heath a second chance, but a third as well--and each time, she never has him answer any hard questions. And, going further on the deception angle, she hardly questions how he could have so easily lied to her throughout their whole relationship. Ultimately, I saw her as a cute, but weak, character. I prefer my heroines to have more self respect.

Heath is a likable character, but there's no real depth to him either. The sub characters serve a minor purpose, and I didn't connect with any of them. They keep some scenes interesting but nothing more than that. Heath and Laney's relationship is okay, but also underdeveloped. Their relationship seems to be one that's good, but that each would get over easy enough after enough time passes. I didn't get the impression that it was anything earth-shattering. Maybe it's because of the other underdeveloped areas of the novel. Not sure. I just know that it wasn't there for me.

Aside from this, it's a fast and entertaining read. I wouldn't spend more than $0.99 for it, however. Any more than that, and I would have returned it to get my money back.

As soon as The Fighter hit my kindle, I started reading it! It has just been too long since I've read Harper Bentley and I can't tell you how awesome it was to read her again. The Fighter was absolutely fantastic and I positively loooved it!

Laney is such a fun heroine! She has that kind of luck where if you don't want something to happen to you, it probably will - she's a good sport about it though. Laney is honest, down-to-earth, sassy, and sweet - I just loved her!

And of course, I loved Heath too! It's true that he can be a total jerkface just like Laney says and he'll make your jaw drop and be all like, "Oh no, he didn't!" but he's actually a really great guy, so I could never stay mad at him or hate him. Heath definitely has his alpha he-man moments - which I loved - but he's also so sweet and sometimes he says the most perfect thing that will having you aww-ing and sighing. He's a great hero and I completely loved him!

The Fighter is a funny, light, sexy read that had me laughing and smiling pretty much the whole time! It made me melt and sigh and gasp in shock and mostly mock outrage. I just had such a wonderful time reading this book and I'm so excited for the next book in The High Rise series!

The Fighter is a standalone, it's told from Heath and Laney's POV, and they do get a happy ending that made me "Awww!" and grin!

Holy hot cover!!!

There were definitely existing pros and cons to the first in Harper Bentley's new series fire starter, The Fighter.

It certainly has potential~~ as it without question has an engaging story there with a wonderful array of characters~. However, it simply lacks a little depth in certain areas that I would have liked for it to have expanded upon.

Some parts felt rushed or forced. I thought the beginning was great but as it progressed from the middle until the ending it was a bit debatable.

I'm not going to jump to conclusions. I will check out the second novel in this series for sure to make more of a decision. Not trying to put a damper upon this read. It was likable and like I had mentioned before, it has potential.

It's no secret I am a huge fan of Harper Bentley. I've been a fan since I met her boys in the Powers That Be series and since then, she has had me as a loyal fan. And now, she gives us a hot new series that will have you begging for more by the end.

This book was phenomenal. It was sexy, sweet, intense, passionate. fun, and had quite a few twists and turns along the way. I laughed. I smiled. I swooned. I got angry. I fell head over heels in love. Are you ready to meet the sexy Heath Noble?

Meet Heath and Laney. She's not interested in his type. He's working a plan. A battle of epic proportions has begun, but their attraction can't be denied. Secrets. Lies. Deception. Hearts will be broken. Souls will be shattered. Will their love survive?

I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book. Both characters were very likable. Heath is a project manager at a construction company moonlighting on weekends as an MMA fighter to spare his brother who is indebted to a loan shark. Enter the niece, Laney. They are drawn together by a powerful connection. Laney is a funny, caring, and hard working young woman who has no idea that her uncle is underhanded. They get together and end up falling in love. Something happens, and you have to read to see if it worked out. A fast paced read that I would definitely recommend.

The fighter is another book of Harper Bentley. It was an easy read. I am usually not a fan of reading series which aren’t finished yet or end in a cliff-hanger, ( hate the anxious wait for the next book in the series). So, I was a little hesitated about reading this book. However, the blurb had me kind of wanting to read it. I started reading the book and it occurred to me that the book didn’t have an epilogue, which added up to the doubt.

Meet the heroin and hero

Laney Kyle; 24 years old and works as a leasing agent at her dad’s company Kyle properties. A classy lady with a little bit of sass. She meets the hero at het apartment’s gym and dubbed him Hot Tattooed Guy (HTG) Her choice in men in the past hasn’t always been the best, hence her doubts at starting a relationship with the hero. Throughout the beginning of their relationship she is trying to protect her heart by ‘testing’ the hero with her little tests she made up when she was younger.

“Guys who look as good as you are usually pricks and because of that, it wouldn’t do me any good to talk to you since I’ve had it up to here with assholes lately.”

Hot Tattooed Guy a.k.a. Heath Noble; 27 years old and is a construction worker. Definitely a big alpha man. He fights in de MMA ring of Laney’s uncle (Edward Kyle) to pay off his little brother’s debt. In the beginning he doubts the actions of Laney. Even though he feels an instant ‘pull’ towards her, by her association with Edward Kyle, he thinks Laney is as bad as her uncle.

“ I don’t know him, but what I do know is he clearly doesn’t like me. I also know that even though he doesn’t like me, he keeps flirting with me, which is weird. It’s got to be the player in him that can’t help it.”

Both of them couldn’t ignore the chemistry between the two of them, and their relationship began to grow to something very close to love. Laney scared to lose her heart to Heath and have it broken in the end, and Heath scared that Laney is putting on a ignorance act towards the actions of her Uncle.
The last quarter if the book had me very curios and axiuos about a possible cliff-hanger, considering more than half of the book was about the growth of their relationship. It had me hanging with the question when Heath’s ‘secret’ would come apparent.
However Harper didn’t disappoint me, thank god. The last quarter of the book is definitely where the questions will be answered and doubts will rise. A Harper Bentley love story wouldn’t be a love story without a fight and disappearance.

Supersucky:
Heath; “My super sucky for today… Super – Being at my cabin in Big Bear. Sucky – Every day since I last saw you.”
“My S-S for today… Super – Not much that’s super without you here. Sucky – I miss you…”

Like I said in the beginning is it a quite easy read. A fun story line, and I was quite curious how both of them would find out about their ‘secret’. Most importantly, thank god, it didn’t end with a cliff hanger!!

Oh my goodness. I loved this book so much! Lainey and Heath... sweet Jesus the are great together. This is my first book by this author and I need more! The writing was absolutely great and the story flowed beautifully. I was hooked from start to finish and I couldn't get enough.

Heath is a very noble man. He puts family first and no matter what he takes care of his own. When his brother gets in a bit of trouble and barely makes it out alive its up to him to make it right. His heart is set on making this great for his family so Heath doesn't expect Laney. She takes him by storm. Only one problem... her family is the enemy. Fighting the feelings he has for her he has to know the truth. Heath is absolutely freakin gorgeous. Tall tattooed built like a brick house and a fighter. And omg is he dirty. That mouth of his had me all tore up. Whew! He is now one of my favorite book boyfriends.

Laney is a innocent little thing. Her humor and banter with her friends and family is super entertaining throughout the whole book. Having dated one too many players she doesn't want to fall for Heath. And boy does she put him through the wringer to prove himself. I did get slightly frustrated with her tests. No one is perfect and putting that much pressure on a man could drive him away. Heath is as close to perfect as a man could be though. Laney falls head over heels for the man and couldn't stop it no matter how hard she tried. Only luck and love isn't on their side. Deception raises it's ugly head and things go down hill quickly. Will they make it? Will Heath be able to have the girl and save his family too? You'll have to read and find out!

This was an amazing read. Very refreshing for me! I loved it and felt like the characters were very relatable. The story was great and the writing was also. I cant wait for more!!!!

What Worked For Me:
Harper Bentley is a new author for me but I’m happy to say that The Fighter will not be the last book of hers I will read. While slow to grab my attention, once it did, I very much enjoyed this book. Our heroine, Laney, is a fun and outgoing woman who finds herself attracted to the new man in the building, the delectable and broody Heath. She first catches a glimpse of him in the gym of their building but after a run in with him in the elevator she decides he is not the guy for her, no matter how much her body wants him. This works for him since he is pretty sure she is involved in the shenanigans of her family that have brought his brother low. He’s determined to bring her family down but that does not stop him from wanting her…and wanting her badly. No matter how these two fight it, sparks keep flying and eventually one thing leads to another…yeah, you know how it goes. While predictable, this plot played out quite charmingly and beautifully. These two have some seriously powerful feelings for one another and the eroticism behind closed doors was so hot I’m surprised the apartment building didn’t burn down with these two in it! This author has an amazing gift for writing some super sex scenes and I loved it. Watching these two build a relationship was fun, especially since we get to see it play out among an apartment singles scene (think parties, hotties, elevators, gym visits). There are a few angsty moments thrown into the plot and a pretty fun roommate of the heroine I wouldn’t mind seeing have her own story told in the future. The plot moved along at a steady pace and was easy to follow and not bogged down with incessant details that can take away from a story. Overall, this book was a fun and delightful way to spend an afternoon and I very much look forward to the next book in this series!

What Didn’t Work For Me:
The book started out slow and didn’t really hook me until about 25% in.

Would I Recommend This Book:
Yes…especially to my friends who love stories featuring underground MMA fighting.

Final Star Rating:
4.5

***************

Harper Bentley can write angst stories with Alpha males characters and sassy women with the ability to keep their men in their toes.
I was attracted to the cover and the Blurb sounds very interesting. Everything started very well, I loved the foreplay between them.
The tension was excruciating, the hot and cold behavior was entertaining.

The story of this irish bad boy trying to help his brother was a great start. Heath Noble is an honest hate worker and protective man. His family comes first.
When he crossed path with the sexy and sassy Laney, his jerk side was revelating at his best. This woman made him confused. He was smitten from the first look, even if he was in denial first!

When business is melting with pleasure, who is gonna be hurt first? Was Laney the one she pretending to be? Or was he blindsided by his emotions? Heath was playing with the fire but couldn't resist to the temptation. One taste of Laney and he was gone.

I really enjoyed this book to some point, but the constant hot and cold behavior towards Laney was a little bit too much. Heath was sometimes overreacting and changing his mind like a girl changes clothes. Hopefully Laney was giving him a taste of his own medicine.

The tension between them was very interesting and well written but I wasn’t enough to me. I wanted more and pushing each other buttons more. From time to time, some parts didn’t make no sense to me.
After the reveal of Heath’s goal to Laney it could be nice to extend this part a little, it was too rushed.

A great reading with a lot of steamy moments and an interesting storyline but the characters were somewhat confusing in their actions.

What first drew me to this book was the cover. It is gorgeous! And it had been a while since I had read anything involving MMA fighting and underground rings so I was ready to take the leap. The Fighter was good, another to add to the category of alpha fighter love stories. Harper adds a bit of intrigue with the underground ring and attempting to protect the main character’s brother but the majority of this book is focused on the very physical relationship between Laney and Heath. This story is told in both POVs which allows the reader to understand what is happening across the board and we see what Heath’s true motives are and the confusion he sparks in Laney. These two are combustible. The attraction is sparked into a flame by their banter and anger. When the inferno goes up in a rage they cannot keep apart. A big portion of this story is focused on their growing relationship. I would have liked a bit more of an expansion on the danger and Heath’s mission but it is a romantic book so romance is a huge part.Harper does a good job of sharing the chemistry between these two main characters and introduces some fun and vital secondary characters. Laney’s family plays a very important role in the book, as does Heath’s family. Their friends round out the cast and allow for more character development without the blistering chemistry to cloud what is happening.

I feel like this book could have had more in the plot line to add more to the danger and fighting theme which would have made it stand out a bit more in the genre. But the writing was good and the characters were likeable. It was a quick read and a story that MMA romance readers should check out!

This book was a strong three stars for me. There were things about it that were wonderful and things I thought got overlooked. It easily drew me in with just the blurb and that hot cover. Once I started the book I was hooked. The characters were well written and relatable. The storyline was interesting and though not entirely original there were aspects of the story that helped it stand out from similar books.

Laney is strong, sassy, opinionated, and seems to attract men who aren't worthy of her. Until she catches the eye of Heath who just moved in down the hall. But he runs so hot and cold it's hard to tell what he's thinking most of the time. Heath isn't looking for a relationship but something about Laney grabs his attention and won't let go. She may just be another complication in his life or she may be the answer to all his problems.

If you like books where the guy is kind of a jerk and the girl doesn't instantly swoon you'll like this book. Both characters have big personalities that both clash with and compliment each other. While the sex scenes are hot and fun I feel like they out weighed the actual storyline. I found myself needing more, their story was full of twist, turns, and deceit but, a lot of that went to the wayside once they gave into their need for each other. I would have liked to see this book delve into more of the dark and drama, see it played out more, and have it be about more than just their relationship.

All in all a strong book that I enjoyed from start to finish.

I have to start by addressing the cover! WOW! HOT! Loved it. The cover caught my attention from the first look and I wanted to read it. I didn't even read the description. I just opened it up on my kindle and started reading.
I really did enjoy this book. This was my first time reading this author and I was pleasantly surprised. In The Fighter you meet Laney and Heath. Laney's family owns the apartment building in which both her and Heath live. They both work out in the facilities gym every morning and that is where they catch each others eye. Heath is a super hot player looking guy with a rocking body and tattoos. All you have to do is look at that cover and you can tell. Their interactions become more and more frequent and the angst keeps building but Heath has a secret. Heath doesn't trust Laney and Laney is scared that Heath could really hurt her. You have to read this gem to find out the secrets and the drama that unfolds. I think you will be happy to read it.

If you like MMA or boxing books you will be happy with this read. I enjoyed the book very much. The writing could use a little bit of a tune up but the story line was on par. This is book 1 in The High Rise series. I have not heard or read anything about book 2 or how many books there will be but it does not end in a cliff hanger. 4 hot tattoo stars.

I always love a hot and sexy fighter and that's what you get with Heath. Heath has moved in the apartment beside Laney and it's hard for her not to notice the new hottie in the gym. Little did she know that she would make a complete fool of herself. She is so quirky and cute that you can't help but laugh at her.

Heath is quite mysterious to Laney and that draws her in even more. But he has his secrets that could destroy them both. I liked how well that worked into the story and made it different from other fighter books. Heath is thinking with his heart and knows what he has to do for his family to make things right. She may be his enemy but he wants her and nothing will stop him from that.

As we all know when secrets come out, lives are destroyed and trust is broken and that's exactly what happens. I felt so bad for Heath because he was only trying to help his family but with Laney in the picture, he had a hard choice to make. I love the instant attraction they had and I found myself giggling like a schoolgirl at times because Laney is quite a character. I did feel that she seemed to forgive and forget a little too quickly but I understand that was just her character. I felt like the ending was a little rushed but it was still a great story and Heath and Laney are perfect for each other.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I have to admit that this book did not do it for me. It was not horrible but it just did not keep my attention. This book was about Heath and Laney. Reading the synopsis I was actually really excited for the book. I like sports books and I’m starting to enjoy MMA and boxing stories.

Laney Kyle works for her family’s business. Heath Noble is a construction project manager and is a amateur fighter. They both live in the same apartment building and little to their knowledge they live on the same floor. After a strange run in at the building gym they both start to take notice. Once he finds out who she is he is convinced that she all kinds of bad like the rest of the Kyle’s. Heath is now trying to save his brother from the mess he has gotten him self into.

I really had high hope for this book. It sounded very interesting when I read the description. Once I got past the first few chapters I started to lose interest. The author does write very good. Better than I can write any day but I don’t think I need that much detail on the most random stuff, I would get lost sometimes. I really didn’t like the way Laney was portrayed. Girls like her in everyday world just annoy me. Just all in all the book was fine and it had a good story line. It just didn’t do it for me maybe you might like it.

Since I started reviewing ARC's, I've encountered great author's that were unknown to me. Harper Bentley is one of them. This story is a 4 star review.

ARC of The Fighter ( The High Rise, book 1) by Harper Bentley provided in exchange for an honest spoiler free review.

Upon meeting for the first time, Laney and Heath have this off the chart instant attraction. Even if he has an hidden agenda, he is attracted to Laney. Laney takes him for a player. Heath does some MMA fighting in order to help his brother out.

This is a romance novel full of drama with a whole lot of steamy scenes that are scorching hot.

I personally had a difficult time forming a connection with these characters. Which made it hard to fully get a feel for this story. I thought some things were grazed over rather quickly.

Overall a fast paced highly entertaining story that I read in one day. There is no slow easing into the story. I was always curious to see what would happen next. Even though there are a few things that I wish were different, I still liked this book.

This standalone was told in dual point of view with an HEA. If the readers like fast paced stories full of scorching hot scenes, this is there book.

Sexy fighter...

Sexy fighter? I was all over this book.. Plus it's Harper Bentley, so anyone who's read her books knows their worth the read :) anywho, we meet Heath and laney.. Laney works in real estate and Heath in construction. Laney sees Heath for the first time at the gym in their apartment complex,he's the hot tattooed guy ( that's what her and her friend refer to him as) he sees laney as well, she's hot and he wants to flirt, that is until he finds out she's a Kyle and his sole purpose for being there is to take down her uncles underground fighting business that he finds himself partaking in to get rid of his brothers debts. Once he finds out Laney is none other than Laney Kyle, he automatically assumes she's apart of it, Laney believes her uncle has a legit fighting thing going on and all money made goes to charity for cancer... But what happens when her and Heath finally get together and she finds out what he's been up to? This book is super sexy, sweet yet still has the a$$hole/sweetness we like in a romance, well some romance, but just trust me, get this book and read it, it's so good :) happy reading :)

This was a pretty good read, not your typical MMA fighter book, I’m giving a 3.5 star rating because I felt that the ending fell flat a bit but it was still a real page turner and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Heath Noble works in construction and used to be an MMA fighter. His brother’s wife got in trouble with gambling debt and when his brother was hurt fighting MMA to repay her debt Heath takes over for him hoping to bring the loan shark Mr. Kyle down. Laney Kyle first spots the “Hot Tattoo God” at the gym and the attraction is immediate but she just knows being that hot can only equal one thing – player, and that’s the last thing that Laney wants in her life. When Heath discovers that Laney is a Kyle he immediately hates Laney but the chemistry wears him down and his hate quickly morphs into heated attraction.

I couldn’t put this book down, I just had to know what was going to happen next but I was disappointed in the ending. I just didn’t feel like Heath and Laney’s issues were all resolved and Laney’s issues with her uncle being a loan shark were left unresolved as well.

It started out pretty strong...at least 3 star worthy, but then the end happened, and the shit hits the fan when The H fucks up...and the heroine forgives him way, way too easily. That took it down half a star. What took it down the rest? That despite the breakup, I didn't really feel any angst....now this could've just been me, but it just felt like stuff that happened with no emotional weight to it....add that to the way the H and h get back together ( keep in mind this is sorta spoilery)

....the hero finds out he was all wrong about the heroine, and that he'd was an idiot, right before he's supposed to go on a trip....so does he instead reach out to the heroine, and apologize? Does he take a second to consider that he can cancel the trip and own up to his douchebaggery? Oh No, not this so called hero.... he still goes on his fishing trip...the one he was taking on his own, to his cabin....one he easily could have called off...And the way he he reconnects and apologize? Text message!she doesn't even warrant an I'm sorry to her face?

Yeah, no. 2 stars.

The Fighter started off pretty strong for me. Heath and Laney meet in an elevator as she is singing and shaking her butt. The banter that ensues during this interaction was so cute and it made me laugh. He is attracted to her but Heath is in the middle of trying to get his brother out of a jam. Once he discovers that Laney is related to the man responsible for harming his brother he starts blaming her. Heath’s hot and cold was frustrating because he immediately assumed Laney was in on the schemes.

The story had lies, secrets, and a villain but I think this all fell a bit flat. Once Laney and Heath finally give in to each other the plot surrounding his brother seemed pushed aside. I feel like the story needed a different direction or more development here. There seemed to be a lot of focus on the hotness factor of both but the story could have been more. I think the characters needed more depth for me to invest in them. That being said I really did enjoy the banter and it was a quick and easy read for me.

Heath Noble was a man on a mission, to bring down a man who almost got his brother killed. Heath wants a clean slate for his brother and does not need any distractions, but he has one when he meets Laney Kyle. Laney is related to the man he wants to bring down, is she part of what is going on or is she is an innocent?

Heath decides Laney is worth the effort and she can be trusted. As his investigation into the Kyle's heats up, so does his relationship with Laney. He knows she is the woman who is meant from him, but in one moment everything they are building is questioned, when the dominoes fall will be able to move past everything that happened.

I was unable to put this one down. Initially Heath is a jerk especially to Laney. Laney is hilarious, she beats to her own drummer and finds herself in embarrassing situations quite often. This was a refreshing read, you were not sure how it would all unfold but what a wicked ride along the way.

Another great story by Harper Bentley!
This one started out a little iffy for me. I actually got a little nervous I wasn't going to like it (oh crap!) because I'm not a big fan of insta-love and I thought that's where we were headed. Plus Heath was kind of jerky a few times there and I was pretty irritated.
What saved it was the Laney was also pretty irritated, so I felt like I could work through my emotional issues with her. Plus the insta-love actually gained some depth as they got to know each other and I ended up LOVING it.
Heath is super-alpha. Definitely the kind of guy who leaves you feeling protected and desired, which is exactly my kind of hero.
All in all, I loved it. I almost wish the "secret" had come a little later in the book (but not possible because of the alternating POV) because that really added some intrigue, but it was great conflict and I ended up really enjoying the HEA.

4 out of 5 stars

Laney Kyle and Heath Noble weren’t an insta-love connection. Laney has had her share of losers and Heath isn’t interested in anything to do with the Kyles. But their sexual chemistry and the draw they feel toward each other can’t be ignored for long.

This book was good from start to finish. There were times when it was a little slow, but overall I thought it had good flow and the characters were likable enough. I enjoyed the “extras” and I enjoyed the storyline.

I was disappointed in the ending...after everything that happened, I felt the resolution was abrupt. I liked the ending, but just didn’t have enough of it.

The Fighter is a great book that the blurb fits perfectly. If you like a little drama, some hot bedroom scenes and the occasional disagreement between the couple, this book is for you.

Like a lot of people, I thought this book could have been more. Neither MC has a ton of depth but the heroine is pretty much a pushover. Hero disses her a lot and she just stomps off to be stunned by his very presence next time. There is a lot of time spent in how hot everyone is. The H is hot, the h is hot. I don't like such huge emphasis on the bangin bods.

Once the MCs finally hook up, we seem to get a lot of abbreviated scenes that just seem to be summarizing to get to the sex scenes. I started to get bored. The ending lack ALOT. The remorse was never there for the lies and assumptions. The apologies are half assed at best. The repercussions for side characters actions is two lines.

I wanted so much more from this. I'd give a second book a chance but not with as much enthusiasm as I did this one.

I have had this book on my TBR list for awhile(I really like Harper Bentley's books) I went ahead and gave it a go. I liked it but...... IDK? Heath was so hot and cold that I was thinking that if I was Laney I would RUN! He would say something nice look at her all sexy like, then say something mean and disrespectful and look at her with hate, then 2 seconds later say sorry. I mean HELLO! If that doesn't scream bipolar IDK what does?!?!? But he cute so she gives a shot, and a shot, and oh yeah another shot??? why? (I mean us the readers know why. But as Laney you just meet some dude and he so hot and cold then say mean stuff, then he say sorry and it makes everything ok?)

Ok so that was kinda a rant. I'll end all this and say I still love Harper Bentley books, just not this one. I'll go 3 stars.
