Books and suds the focus of Booktoberfest

Kalamazoo Public Library has partnered with Bell's Brewery, Tibb's Brewing, New Holland Brewery, Tempo Vino Winery, West Michigan Beer Tours, Hop Head Farms, One Well Brewing and Shakespeare's Pub  for its second annual Booktoberfest — a celebration of books and beer. How to Select the Right Ingredients, Sept. 29

Meet John Mallett, brewery manager for Bell’s Brewery, Inc. and author of “Malt: A Practical Guide from Field to Brewhouse,” will speak at 6 p.m. Sept. 29 at Oshtemo Branch Library, 7265 W. Main St. Mallett will explain how ingredients make a difference in crafting a quality brew. From hops to malts to barley, learn how to select the highest quality ingredients while still being cost-effective.

Beer Tasting with Tempo Vino Winery, Oct. 13

Alex Mantakounis, owner of Tempo Vino, will speak at 6L30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Shakespeare’s Pub, 241 E. Kalamazoo Ave. Mantakounis is an accomplished homebrewer and the president of Kalamazoo Libation Organization of Brewers. Hop Head Farms, Oct. 20

Jeff & Bonnie Steinmann, owners of Hop Head Farms, will talk about hop plants at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at Eastwood Branch Library, 1112 Gayle Ave. Everyone is curious about hop plants, which grow 18 feet every season and provide one of the key flavors in beer. They will take guests on a virtual tour of the and the processing center that turns out top quality hops for world class brewers around the United States.
