O
n the surface, high-end British drama Wolf Hall and the latest instalment of the Star Wars franchise appear to have little in common. Both, however, were cast by Nina Gold, who is being honoured with the Special Award at this evening’s ceremony in recognition of her outstanding contribution to casting. Gold, the first casting director to receive such an acknowledgement from BAFTA, has more than 100 television programmes and films to her name. Yet it is not so long ago that she scored her first official credit, with 1994’s Smashie and Nicey: The End of an Era, featuring the ageing DJs played by Paul Whitehouse and Harry Enfield. But she had her first taste of casting at university when asked to find 30 extras for an AC/DC promo video on the basis that “as a student I must know loads of people with leather jackets”, Gold recalls. ÒTHERE IS SO “That wasn’t casting but MUCH INTERESTING really it was exciting. WORK BEING I thought, ‘This filmmaking lark is DONE [IN BRITISH great and I want TELEVISION]. to be a part of it.’” From music WEÕRE ENJOYING videos, Gold ANOTHER branched out into television GOLDEN AGE.Ó ads. Then came the Smashie and Nicey television special. Films soon followed, including the BAFTA-nominated adaptation of the classic children’s novel, The Borrowers (1997), and Mike Leigh’s Gilbert and Sullivan biopic, Topsy-Turvy, the same year. “Mike trusted me to cast this huge film, which was amazing because I was learning as I went along,” recalls Gold, who had earlier worked with Leigh on commercials. “I was a massive fan of his work and so it was a dream come true, but it was also terrifying.” The actors Gold cast had to not only sing Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, but also embrace Leigh’s improvisational method of working. Topsy-Turvy was the start of a long and unbroken relationship with the filmmaker – Gold has cast all his subsequent films. “It gets better and better. Mike and I have been working together for 20 years and we have a great time,” she says. Films such as Vera Drake (2004) made Gold’s name internationally – Leigh’s work is “critically well received all over the world”, she says – and then casting the multiBAFTA-winning The King’s Speech (2010) cemented her

NINA GOLD Behind every great onscreen acting performance lies an even better casting director. They are the unsung heroes, whose defining role in the making of films and television often goes unseen and unrecognised. Not so tonight, as BAFTA celebrates the stunning achievements of casting director Nina Gold with the Special Award. The long list of success stories attached to her name over 20-plus years reveals just how influential she has been not only for British television and film, but internationally too. recalls. “Now, I can’t imagine what I was thinking – I find it completely compulsive and love casting it.” And, naturally, the series’ high attrition rate, with characters regularly and bloodily dispatched, offers her plenty of work. “I cast it with my colleague, Robert Sterne, and every year we say, ‘Surely this year there can’t be that many new roles’ – and then there always are,” says Gold. reputation ( it also won Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter BAFTAs for their acting, among its haul of seven wins). Gold now effortlessly moves between television and film, working on the biggest titles across both art forms. Nevertheless, even on big blockbusters, there is room for fresh faces. Rookie British actors John Boyega and Daisy Ridley’s casting in The Force Awakens, and Eddie Redmayne are just a few of the names Gold has helped on their way. “I’m not claiming to have invented Eddie,” Gold notes, by way of example. “Actors do it on their own talent. I cast him in My Week with Marilyn and Les Misérables and I really believed in him big time to play Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything – he was totally brilliant.” Redmayne went on to win a BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscar for his performance in the latter. International television sensation Game of Thrones, for which Gold won her second Emmy in 2015 (the first was for another HBO series, John Adams, in 2008), offers further opportunities to break new talent, including Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington. “Seeing people grow and develop as actors is great,” she says. Gold was wary when first approached to cast the fantasy drama, but the show has since gone on to earn her five Emmy nominations. “I can remember thinking, ‘This isn’t my cup of tea at all,’” she
