Leonardo DiCaprio will stop at nothing to get revenge for the murder of his son in the first official trailer for The Revenant.
Both intense and scenic, the almost-three-minute preview shows early 19th century explorer Hugh Glass — played by DiCaprio — almost dying after he is mauled by a bear and then being buried alive after his son is murdered by villain John Fitzgerald, portrayed by Tom Hardy.
“I ain’t afraid to die anymore; I done it already,” says Glass toward the end of the trailer.
One of the more disturbing moments in the trailer is when Fitzgerald tells the leader of their exploration party that Glass couldn’t be saved from his injuries and that they “did what they had to do.”
“He was buried right,” says Fitzgerald as the scene cuts to a still-breathing Glass laying in a shallow grave on a snow-covered ground, dirt barely covering his body.
The Revenant is director Alejandro G. Inarritu‘s follow-up to Birdman, and the film already is generating Oscar buzz.
The film will have a limited release on Christmas Day before going wide on Jan. 8, 2016.
