A Savile Row bespoke tailor has been inundated with last-minute requests to alter morning suits in time for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral on Wednesday.

Dege & Skinner said it had received dozens of calls on Tuesday from customers needing black ties and asking for their waistcoats and suits to be modified, after realising the garments no longer fitted.

A dress code issued to guests attending Baroness Thatcher’s funeral said that men should wear “full dress ceremonial without swords” if appropriate, or otherwise morning dress with black waistcoat and black tie or a dark suit, while women should wear a day dress with hat.

“We have had a number of panicking phone calls - people calling up after finding out that their morning suit doesn’t fit anymore,” said Dege & Skinner spokesperson Cass Stainton.

“There’s been a number of calls coming in for the first time today. I was aware of the last one coming in at around lunchtime.

“A number of our existing customers have had their bespoke morning suits rushed round to them in cars.”

She added: “We haven’t disappointed anyone today, but it’s involved hard work and quite a lot of running around. The team have been able to pull out all the stops to look after our customers.”
