Kalla and the Abyss

Rate this book
Kalla is a young woman with no memory of her past and only a bleak future in front of her. She spends her nights in a tiny cell with a lone window she can barely reach and spends her days with three people she calls the Witches and a scientist who loves to torture her named Thales Mercer.

What is so special about Kalla? She is a tech, a type of person born with a malfunction in the brain that alters the way things affect them. Her ability? Cryotech, the ability to control the heat (or lack thereof) around her. At the time she doesn't understand her gift but as she discovers more who are similar to her in the organization Myst she begins to train and perfect her ability.

However, she is still stuck in her current prison and has to escape. Will the Myst be there or she be trapped within the abyss of this hell forever?

I received a request for a review when I had some free time, which of course I penciled into my review schedule… otherwise I would have forgotten immediately (mom brain). I was excited to start a new adventure with Kalla and the Abyss, next on my TBR list. In the beginning I had no idea that this was a short story, then again I didn’t even know the book’s name before messaging Amber Morant (the author) to let her know I had some free time. I suppose I could have reader-stalked her and her work prior to the fact, but half of the fun is not knowing what to expect. In hindsight; I would have let Amber know I was ready for a review copy as soon as she had offered it. I didn’t know that it was a short story; the first part of a serial even. I prepared my late night salty snack, coupled with a chocolaty treat - all key factors in full reading immersion. I was ready to read. I never once touched my snacks, I was sucked in the moment I read the first paragraph, and before I knew it I was left swiping the screen eager to read more… but there was nothing left to read. I purchased, part two in the serial trilogy. I wanted more and needed answers. 3.5 Stars - I probably would have rated this read higher had I known that it was a micro read in the beginning. There were some editing errors, or it could have been a dialect issue - US vs UK.

Great Introduction To Kalla's World

This short story is a great introduction into Kalla's world. With only hints of the magic and the greater hands at play, we are left questioning the roles of Abyss and Myst. Looking forward to the next in the trilogy.

An interest start.

Loved the book. Kalla is a most interesting character and keeps you wanting to read until the end to find out if she actually escapes. First time reading from this author and not the last

I love the whole Kalla series. Amber has made a wonderful fantasy world and I really enthralled with the idea of reading and learning more about it. Kalla coming into her powers over the course of the books so far has been an enchanting ride. Can't wait for the next one.
