Breaking Habits #2

Forfeiting Decency

Rate this book
“Sleeping with married men doesn’t bother me as much as not having a place to live does.”

Kaley Monroe lived a life of privilege until her father went to prison four years ago and all of her family’s assets were seized by the federal government. Fending for herself, she relied on what comes naturally to her—her beauty. Having sex for money isn’t glamorous or ideal, but it’s manageable. She doesn’t expect life to show her any mercy, and she won't live in ignorance.

It’s not until Kip Foster is released from prison that her life starts to feel complicated. Somehow, Kip unearths desires in Kaley that she never knew she had. A desire to be more, to feel more, and...to be loved more. However, lies by omission are the most dangerous secrets, and they refuse to remain hidden.

Sometimes, easy isn't always a choice.

Please note: Forfeiting Decency is a spin-off from the Breaking Habits Series. While it can be read as a standalone, it does contain spoilers from book one in the series, Taking Mine.

Sexy, suspenseful, sassy, stupid good.

Rachel did an excellent job with character development. I adore Kaley. Her sass and strength drive this story. And Kip - oh Kip. I think I love Kip.

Every person in this book was well thought out and perfectly written.
The story is paced beautifully and unfolds so naturally.

I actually fist pumped the air and screamed the following out loud: WHAT! OMG! HOLY SH*T! YES!

Since I hate spoilers, this is the end of my review. If you can call it that.

Read this book, because its an excellent and utterly enjoyable piece of art..

I really enjoyed this book, the two man characters Kip and Kaley were both complex and difficult characters but loved them both but Kip stole my heart.
Kaley's life changed when her fathers life imploded and to make ends meet she sleeps with men for money. Does she want to, does she enjoy it absolutely not but in a sense she's trapped.
Kip is a friend from her past who's recently been released from prison, they've always been close but when they meet again sparks fly.Lilly is Kip's sister and was Kaley's best friend but they've been out of touch for years.
You may not like some of the decisions Kaley makes but as the story develops you understand why she does it. Until Kip I think that Kaley really was on her own, I understood Lilly's anger but I felt Kaley's pain at her indifference I must admit I wanted to shake her more than a few times.
The love between them is strong, deep and felt so real. Love isn't easy and this story shows it warts and all it's definitely not plain sailing for them.
It's a story full of twists and turns with lots of secrets. This is a book I won't forget.

There are things I enjoyed and thing I scrunched my nose at in this book. My biggest complaint is that this is book two. I received it from The BookWorm Box monthly subscription, and it spoils book one. I doubt I will ever read book one now. Also, I wonder if the parts where I didn’t feel connected to the characters were because their personalities were laid out in book one.
The story flows well and the two main characters are interesting and enjoyable to read about. Some of the story was skipped over or summarized and that was annoying, but still it’s an enjoyable story overall.

Forfeiting Decency and Taking Mine are hidden gems. They are unique and a little mysterious. They have a great plot and writing. There are always little things that make the book special and so lovable. You can’t help but wanting to know everything about the characters and you will fall in love with them, flaws and all. Kip and Kaley definitely have their flaws. Kaley’s life has been turned upside down a couple years ago and Kip also had a few difficult years, but they are determined to change their lives.

Kaley visits Lilly and she doesn’t expect Kip to be there. Kaley runs into Kip a few times and they become good friends. They spend all their free time together and grow closer. I absolutely adored Kip and Kaley together, first as friends and then as a couple. They belong together. They are so hot, supportive, comforting and not judgmental. They encourage each other to do things that they won’t do on their own. Kip is protective, caring, passionate and strong. Kaley is a little lost, but also strong.

Lilly and Justin appeared sometimes. They were there when they were needed. Justin and Lilly are still the same. Justin would do anything for his Lilly. I’m so happy that they are still a solid and strong couple.

I went in blind, because I loved Taking Mine so much and the cover of this book is one of my favorite covers ever. I didn’t even know who the characters were. You can read this book as a standalone, but be aware that all the twists of Taking Mine are revealed in this book. I highly recommend both books and I will definitely reread them! I already look forward to the author’s next release.

This was a DNF for me. I am sure that this story is great, as much as I read had great promise and I was starting to get into it, but this book needs an edit/proofread. A few errors I can let slide but when they start to mount up and detract from my enjoyment of the book I just get irritated and lose interest. In such a small percentage of the book there were a lot and if that is a sign of things to come then I’m giving up now.

Forfeiting Decency is heart stopping and raw. Rachel Schneider gives us a book about two characters, Kip and Kaley, that have had a history together, which has neither been easy or unemotional. Rachel Schneider just created brilliance with Forfeiting Decency in all of its rampant emotions, anxiety ridden plot, and silent but strong passion fueled love. No other story has made me feel this way and this book has now become a favorite of mine this year. The characters had so much hidden complexity that I was feeling their every thought.

Forfeiting Decency had me feeling unhinged with need, want, and passion for Kip. Kip is everything to me and he is MINE. Mine, I tell you. I didn’t know that I would fall this hard for him. In book 1, Taking Mine, I saw some good characteristics in him but I just never really connected with him as a book boyfriend. BUT boy was I wrong. Rachel you outdid yourself with this one. He is amazing and real and a complete heartthrob. Everything that came out of his mouth, and even his facial expressions, had me wanting to jump him. He did everything right and everything about him just felt humble. The way he loved was silent but he loved harder than words can describe.

Kaley wasn’t my favorite and I am so jealous that she has memories with Kip. She has flaws, lots of them. She is not likeable but at the same time she is so unlikeable that she makes you like her. That makes no sense at all but it will once you read it. She just has this air about her that drives you insane with wanting to make her see the light. Her mistakes are real and I love that she accepts them and after so much going on in her life she owns up to them. That is the thing I admire most about her. Even though she made me angry, I know she did the right thing. By the end, I felt connected to her and I understood everything.

Another incredible part of this book was that I was able to get more Justin and Lilly, from book 1. I can’t tell you how much I missed them and seeing them in this book just stole my breath away. They were adorable together. Though I was angry at Lilly. She just made me angry. Her interactions were Kaley made my heart hurt. I understood it but I wanted to defend Kaley. She really had very few on her side and I wanted to stand up for her, but I got everything. I knew that words needed to be said and I am glad they were spoken.

This love story isn’t like any other. Kip and Kaley are different than any other characters I have ever read. Their love felt true and deep. Real and understanding. Desperate yet needed. Even though not a lot was expressed I felt it leap through the pages. The unspoken words were the strongest in this epic love. I have never read a love story with so much quiet love but overflowing depth. I don’t even know how best to describe Forfeiting Decency because this is a story you need to read to be able to understand it’s meaning. I just love this story so much.

I didn't think anyone could overcome the love I had for Justin from Taking Mine, but BOOM! Here comes Kip Foster, a.k.a the dream man of every woman's fantasy.

Here is a guy who is good to his core, sexy as hell, sensitive and not afraid of commitment, uhmm where do I sign up please? Can I volunteer Hunger Games style? Pretty please?

I read the first book in 3-4 hours, but I devoured this one in less than 3 hours. I couldn't put it down. It riveting, this book hit me in all the feels, ALL OF THEM, but watching the journey between Kip and Kaley unfold at times warmed my heart and at others was like watching a train wreck happening, it was painful but you just couldn't look away.

That was this book, Kaley's choices were at times to me mysterious and painful. I couldn't understand her reasoning behind her decision until much later on in the book, but in the end I understood and she kinda broke my heart.

Kip is fresh out, recently released from jail, he sees Kaley after four years and there is a connection between them he wants to explore and he cannot understand what is holding her back.

Actions has consequences, and sleeping with men for money for survival has dire consequences that is coming back to bite Kaley. There are prices to pay, and Kaley can't escape it and it becomes an obstacle in her relationship with Kip.

God, I don't even know where to begin in describing how much I loved this book, it dealt with a lot of serious issues and had darker element to the story line than Taking Mine did. It had depth, freaking amazing characters. I admire and respect Kaley, while I didn't always agree with what she did, she made some tough and brave decisions that I don't if I or most women could even do. I wish I had half the courage she displayed in this book.

This book was really great, so great in fact that when I finished it at 2 AM, I was an emotional mess so I heated up some pizaa and ate my feelings out. And even then, for days afterwards, I haven't been able to pick up another book because I cannot let this story go, it's still in my head.

I'm truly amazed at this author's writing, for a debut author and this only being her second book is truly remarkable. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Forfeiting Decency is the second novel in Rachel Schneider's Breaking Habits series. This mysterious & sexy best friends older brother romance was a beautifully layered. Kaley Monroe hasn't had the easiest past 4 years. Going from having everything at her fingertips to scraping to get by can change a person forcing them to do things they never would have thought they would stoop too. Kip Foster has spent the past 4 years in prison and now out wants to make a life for himself. Running into Kaley has changed his perspective about his little sister's best friend and Kip can't help but be drawn to her.

First lets discuss this book's stunning cover! After reading this story it only adds to the beauty. I adored Taking Mine, book 1, in the series - it is one of my favorite reads of 2016 and Forfeiting Decency is an excellent follow up. Kip & Kaley are both interesting characters and their chemistry is off the charts! I personally found the pacing in the last third of the novel a little off but it didn't take away my enjoyment of the story. What I love about Rachel's stories is that everything isn't always roses and chocolates and that actions have consequences. I hope the next novel will be Lance's story - pretty please! 4.5 Stars for Forfeiting Decency by Rachel Schneider

This was a story filled with choices and consequences. Kaley finds herself in a position where life isn't fair but you have to keep pushing through no matter what. Instead of leaning on anyone she finds her own ways to survive this harsh world. Her choices definitely aren't what everyone would chose but she does what she has to. There were times I wanted to slap some sense into her but her character really grows on you as you find out more about her and why she makes the choices she does. Kip is definitely the hot bad boy and starts to show who he really is under all the facade that he has built up. I fell for Kip his character really develops and you instantly want to know everything there is to know about him. Will Kaley and Kip finally find someone they can lean on or will hidden truths be the things that destroys anything they could possibly build. You must read to find out. I read this as a stand alone and it was smooth flow ku and I didn't feel as tho I was missing anything by not reading the first book.

Rachel Schneider is definitely one to watch. She did an amazing job with her debut novel, Taking Mine and her writing has only gotten better with this follow up novel. While this book is considered a romance, it lacks the swoon and cliche fairy tale feel of a typical romance novel, which for me was a great thing. This story has dark subject matter, raw real-life material, and content that is certainly of no fairy tale. The author depicts a grittiness in her art and in her characters that is spot on. Kaley, the main female character, has seen way too much in her young life and has struggled to make it, resorting to less than desirable activities to try to improve her situation. Kip, the main male character, has a colored past himself but only wants to love and genuinely be loved in return. How the story unfolds isn't what you would expect or predict. The plot flows smoothly and hits you with twists at exactly the right moment. The character development was flawless, including support characters. I only wish there was a little more to the story. Bravo, Rachel Schneider.

It said this could be read as a stand alone. Maybe I should have read the first in this series. I felt that once I was getting into a groove in this book it jumped somewhere else. I did enjoy my time with Kaley and Kip. But I would suggest reading the first in this series and not doing this as a stand alone.

You don't need to read the first book in the series but I think it helps. I didn't read book 1 and there were definitely some things I missed. And I didn't have the backstory.

Kaley is an escort, trying to make money because her father was sent to prison and all his assets were frozen. So Kaley isn't the priviledged princess she once was.

Kip has just been released from prison and is working on getting his life back together. He and Kaley have known each other for years (Kip's sister is Kaley's BFF) and there's always been a spark, just now it's grown into a 4-alarm fire.

This was a good book and a good read. It wasn't an overly sweet romance but was definitely more suspenseful and I liked it!

Once in awhile, you come across an author whose book you read and you think "This can't possibly be the first novel they have written." I felt this way when I first read Rachel Schneider-Author 's debut in Taking Mine. She has done it again in her second novel Forfeiting Decency. Her writing style is that of a seasoned, well published author, creating a world and characters that are so well thought out that they have to be real. But they are not. Her storylines are unique and fresh and her characters pull you in and make you want more. Forfeiting Decency is a true gem in the romance world. In this world, behaviors have consequences and some of those are truly painful.

Kaley is a beautiful character. Her downward spiral into an abyss she feels she cannot climb out of is painful at times to read. This book has some dark and serious issues it deals with, but Rachel Schneider does so very truthfully. I admired Kaley eventually, even if her choices in life are not something I could ever do, because I got it. I understood why. Through the storytelling you feel Kaley's pain and revulsion she even has for herself. This story is brutually honest in ways that will make you look at your reasoning for your own life choices.

Kip is no stranger to the darker side of life, yet he cannot begin to understand why Kaley is not honest with him. Especially since they already know each other and have a history that is entertwined. Does he want to know her truth? Can he forgive her for her choices? Can he still love her? Can she love him? This story unfolds at a fast pace, full of suspense and raw emotion. It has so many layers and as you peel them away, you will fall more in love with Kip and Kaley than you ever thought possible.

Rachel Schneider is a brilliant author and one who has taken her place on my list as a MUST READ FAVORITE. A 5 star rating just isnt enough of a rating for me. Get this book. Stop what you are doing and get it now. Read everthing she puts out. You will understand. Rachel Schneider will leave you attempting to keep turning the page in your kindle multiple times, even though it says complete. Bravo.

Kaley Monroe has lived her life in the lap of luxury, until her father went to prison, and all the families' assets were seized by the federal government. Four years later has changed Kaley, as she's been fending for herself, and at this point, she has no illusions that life will show her any mercy. She's used her beauty in order to live, and selling herself for sex isn't great, but at least it keeps things manageable. Kip Foster is finally released from prison after four years, and when he runs into Kaley, he feels a strong connection to her that he seriously wants to explore. But Kaley is holding herself back, even though she feels it too, and its confuses him. What will happen when Kaley's past career choices come back to bite her?

I'm not even sure how to write this review, as I'm not sure how to pinpoint how I feel, other than to say, the dramatic girly girl emotions are running rampant. But I do know that when a story affects me this much, then a 5 star rating simply isn't enough. The character development is all out fantastic, as Kip and Kaley are complex characters, who come off very realistic. A high octane, raw, and gut wrenching storyline made me want to curl up into the fetal position, and yet, I couldn't stop reading to save my life. Rachel Schneider's diabolically brilliant writing style has me all tied up in knots, and grabbed me by the throat from the get go, while keeping my heart racing at a high level until the end. The emotions that she invoked in me, gave the ride of my life that I really needed medication for. And if that wasn't enough, the silent, and all consuming love was powerful, and brought a tear to my eye once or twice. Bottom line, I WILL be reading this amazing author again, so I have to HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Rachel Schneider is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her storylines are unique and so intriguing that I could not put the books down. I absolutely loved Taking Mine, so when I heard that Rachel had another book coming out in the series, I was waiting not very patiently to get my hands on it. It was definitely worth the wait. I loved seeing what was happening with the characters from Taking Mine and learning more about Kaley and Kip. I liked Kaley, but I LOVED Kip. He couldn't have been more perfect if he tried. His patience, understanding and love for Kaley was amazing. I would love to see more of Kip and Kaley in the future. And I'm REALLY hoping Rachel continues the series so we can learn more about some of the other characters too!

So I read this book without reading Breaking Habits #1 and now I feel like I need more of their world. But you totally dont have to, I was able to read this book without feeling like something was left out by not reading the first one. I'll be honest at the start of the book I did not think I was going to be into this girl Kaley and her world of dumb mess but I learned fast that I loved this jumbled mess of a girl. And right away I feel in love with this Kip guy, I mean how could you not.

I really enjoyed the dynamics of each relationship within this story and it really had me on my toes, needing to know what was next. It was a great book about love, learning to love, accepting love and giving love truly and unselfishly.

"Loving someone isn't a sacrifice, Kaley. It's a reward."

This is a book I will recommend to all those lovers of books I come across.

A little confusing dia!ogue and scenes at times.

Kaley appears normal at times and then seems like a total misfit in the next sentence. I thought I missed a page or even a chapter somewhere several times while reading this story.

Rachel Schneider does it again! Yet another super book from this author in the Breaking Habits series. I would recommend you read the first book in the series beforehand as you will gain a much better idea of where all the characters have come from, who they are, why they are where they are etc. There are also some major spoilers in book 2 regarding things that happened in book 1, so to me, reading this in order is a must!!

Kip and Kaley's love story is a difficult one. They both have pasts - as we know from the first book Kip was sent to prison at the end of the first book. Well, he's out! And him and Kaley embark on a friends to lovers romance. Their story is deep, it's complex and extremely meaningful.

I loved their characters. Kip was SWOON!!!! Loved him - his character was lovely throughout and I could really understand all his thoughts and feelings. He's a kind, thoughtful soul and was a brilliant hero! Kaley I also found to be really likeable. She has a lot of difficulties and has had a tough time of it, so could really sympathise with her thoughts, feelings and actions. She is in such a difficult situation throughout this whole book, but the support both Kip and Kaley gain from each other is second to none.

Rachel has managed to weave so many layer to this story. The characters are really well developed and the plot line is exquisite. It's hard to read at times, and you know things aren't going to go well, but you simply can't put it down. Rachel's writing style is out of this world and she writes in such a way you just can't fail to connect to all of the characters and the entire story. It's gripping, full of suspense and raw. You have no idea what is going to happen at any one time, with a great build up to a lovely ending. There is a layer of darkness to this story with the way the storyline goes, but there are also some tender moments, funny moments and some HOT and STEAMY moments. The perfect mix of all you could possibly want!

I liked the fact we saw a lot more of the characters from the first book, including Lilly and Justin. I loved them in the first book and was happy to get more. Although I wanted Lilly to be a teeny tiny more supportive of Kaley!

My one tiny criticism (if I had to) - I needed an epilogue (but that's just me!!)! It finished a bit too quickly for me and do like just that little bit more as to what happens next! I really hope we get more from this series, and would quite like to see a book for Lance.

I was totally hooked from beginning to end, falling in love with the characters, the story and the brilliant writing! I cannot wait to see what this author brings us next - She's definitely one to watch out for!!

Here I was in love with taking mine, adoring the couple that was Justin and Lily. Waiting patiently for the next book in the series and wondering if it can reach the exquisiteness of the first.

BAM! Rachel did it again, she has honestly flawed me on how perfect and at ease she is with her writing style, the words comfortably flow of the page and before you realise it you are totally submerged in this crazy world she has created. Not able to put the book down.

We met Kip and Kaley in book 1 and there's some major spoilers relating to book 1 in this book so I would highly suggest reading them in order.

In taking mine you didn't really get to know too much about Kip, he was Lily's brother and didn't have many likeable or redeeming qualities. But this book totally changes everything and you see him for the person he is, caring, sweet, deep and beautiful. He loves hard and falls deeper, but let's you see more in his actions than in his words and you feel everything along with him.

Kaley is misunderstood and complicated, her actions are questionable, but at the same time you root for her and she becomes so likeable that you can't help but want to be her friend and gently push her in the right direction.

The relationship between her and Kip, is as infuriating as it is beautiful, both having complicated pasts to overcome. But it's written with such complexity that it's stunning.

This story has plenty of twists and turns to the plot and the dark edges you expect from book 1 continue and keep you on the edge. I live the fact you aren't sure where this story is going or what's happening next.

It's great to see returning characters, getting to see the continuation of Justin and Lily's story is wonderful and seeing and hearing Lance again is fab as he was a favourite of mine in book 1 and I'm hopefully that book 3 will be his !

I adored this book as much as Taking Mine and Kip is definitely on par with Justin as the male hero.

Rachel doesn't disappoint and has definitely become a firm favourite of mine. She is definitely one to watch and I can't wait to see what she does next

While I love sweet happily ever afters with little to no drama, there’s something gripping about a story that’s real, raw and gritty. And that’s what you get with Forfeiting Decency. This isn’t some fluffy sweet romance. It made me feel so much—want, passion, frustration, anxiety and anger. It is breathtakingly beautiful in all its complexities. I was immersed fully into Schneider’s world. And I didn’t put it down until the last page was read.

Kaley was independent, fierce and a whole lot broken. I don’t think she even realized how broken she was until Kip came back into her life. There’s something vulnerable about her. But she’s not a character that’s easy to like. She has a lot of flaws and makes a lot of mistakes. Eventually she won me over but it was a hard won battle. Kip…Kip is all that is good and decent in a man. Yeah he’s made mistakes but sometimes good people do bad things. He’s hard working, tender and a natural caregiver. He’s a dream boyfriend. The character development was out of this world. These two are complex characters with real flaws, problems and dreams. It makes it easy to relate to them. We also get a glimpse of the rest of the characters from book one.

There are plenty of twists and turns to keep anyone excited and hooked on this book. Add in some passionate love scenes with desperate need, characters that make you just want to hug them and tell them it’ll be ok, and plenty of feels. This is a recipe for an incredibly brilliant story. I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nails. I cannot wait to see what Schneider does next.

FORFEITING DECENCY
by Rachel Schneider

Forfeiting Decency is book 2 in the Breaking Habits series and the first one i've read from this series. This book is a well written book about Kaley and Kip and their journey to love for themselves and for each other. Kaley is an escort and waitress who has lost the meaning of self love and respect after her father was sent to prison and she looses all that she knows and is familiar with. Kip is a man who is just discovering himself and who he wants to be in the future after he has just been released from prison. You truly get to feel the trials with themselves and with the relationships with those around them as they learn and grow from the twist and turns in this book. Kaley and Kip bring out emotions of sadness, anxiety and sorrow along with feelings of hope as they travel down the path to their self discovery and self redemption together and apart. I loved the book as a whole it is well written and the author really helps you feel and understand why they made the choices that they did. I do give it 4 stars as there are times during the book that it seems to go too long and you begin to lose what you believe they are feeling and going through.

Can you imagine living a life where one little decision made by your corrupt father has a significant outcome on the lives of you and your childhood friends? This is exactly what happens to Kaley. Her father caused so many horrific problems, childhood friends going to prison, parole, because of running drugs through a chop-shop. The chop-shop was under investigation and people who didn't know anything about the drug ring, got caught in the middle. Kaley's father was very wealthy, but when the drug ring was disbanded and the courts took everything, it left her homeless and no employment. So Kaley becomes an escort at the Hudsons, where it's all run by politicians, judges, and that's where everything begins to unravel once again. She is reunited with friends and becomes involved withKip. Kip is the brother of her long time friend!! This book is about steamy romance, rebuilding friendships and love relationships. Will Kip and Kaley become involved? What will their future hold? Will this group of friends be able to withstand the reach of her father from prison?? What a roller coaster ride for everyone involved. Loved this great book - full of mystery and intrigue!! Reviewed By Hot Box Reviews on FB. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

i voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

let me start by saying Taking Mine was one of the best books i read in 2016, and Forfeiting Decency did not let me down in any way! learning more about Kip, who i knew would have my heart from the previous book, and Kaley, who i knew i would have a love/hate relationship with, was the highlight to end an intense year. i loved watching their relationship grow from friendship to something more and all the in between drama. Kip is seriously swoon-worthy, and beyond perfect. i need to find me one of these guys in real life.. for real!! watching Kaley's growth through this novel was harder than i expected but was pleasantly surprised with her.

the ending was perfect for this novel and i fell even harder for Kip at the end.
Rachel Schneider wrote another amazing novel.
READ IT. READ IT. FALL IN LOVE WITH KIP! i dare you not too.
