I’ve had a kidney transplant and before the transplant was in a bad car accident which led me to be put on pain meds. I’ve taken traMADoL and Morphine Sulfate for the pain. I’ve read in couple places that it is safe and it is not safe for transplant patients. Would you say long term use of these are safe for transplant patients? Thanks!

Tramadol can interact with your transplant medication and needs to be carefully monitored. This should be discussed with your transplant physician.

Una vez que el paciente ha alcanzado la etapa terminal de la enfermedad renal, es poco probable que cualquier medicamento tenga exito en la restauracion de la funcion renal. Lo mejor es que consulte con un nefrologo sobre la dialisis … Continue reading

I have been at stage 3a CKD for 10 years now , but I had to tell my former PCP to refer me to a nephrologist in 2014 because I was so fatigued so I am not entirely sure if 10 years is correct. My question is would I not be a candidate for a kidney transplant because of an autoimmune condition? RA?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is not a contraindication to kidney transplantation as long as it is well managed. If you have extra articular manifestations such as lung disease or amyloidosis, then transplant can be complicated. Most other autoimmune diseases such as … Continue reading

A coworker had a kidney transplant Feb. 22, 2024 from live donor. Kidney is not working. She is having a biopsy today 3/14/2024. At what point is it considered a failure after one week of not working or when? Coworker is continuing to do dialysis and we are curious if new kidney will still have a chance to start working or is it past the opportunity now that we are 3 weeks in.

Primary non-function (or delayed function) of a kidney transplant can last for weeks to months, although this would be uncommon with a living donor transplant. The transplant kidney biopsy should provide information about the viability of the transplant and a … Continue reading

My sister-in-law is having complications with her 13-year-old kidney transplant. When she runs into trouble (which has become a constant) her doctor is always unavailable giving her no choice but to go to the ER and admit herself to the hospital for care. Very few doctors at Eisenhower Medical Center but there should be some provision of quality of care. What would you do? Thanks!

Your sister-in-law should be consulting with both her primary care physician (PCP) and her transplant nephrologist. Her PCP should be providing preventative health care and her transplant nephrologist should be providing ongoing transplant care as well as communicating with the … Continue reading

I was recently diagnosed with stage 2 CKD. My primary doctor advised me that there were no need to see a nephrologist at this time. My question is do you think I should be seeing a nephrologists?

Most primary care physicians (PCP’s) are able to diagnose and care for patients with early stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). In some cases, if they have a question about the diagnosis or if there is a need for a kidney … Continue reading

I apologize if this type of question is not really to be answered here, and is out of place. It is about antibodies in Good Pasture Disease. I was diagnosed with the disease 11 months ago, and started peritoneal dialysis … Continue reading

How should I explain the better benefits of a live kidney transplant over hemodialysis?

I generally tell my patients that a successful kidney transplant will double the life-expectancy of an in-center hemodialysis patient. It is less expensive to have a kidney transplant after one year of transplantation. My patients with a kidney transplant have … Continue reading

Hi. I have had a kidney transplant for 19 years now. It was a live donor. I’ve had issues with cellcept, rappamune and gengraf to the point where it put in the hospital for 5 days…my doc finally changed my meds to prograf/tacrolimus only and it seems to be working fine, however the new doc is giving 5 mg AM & 5 MG pm of tacrolimus–my tac level is reading at 8.0 and I am not sure that this is a good level to be at…Can you tell me what other meds could work well with the tac that is not cellcep, gengraf or rappamune? Thanks

I am unable to recommend medical therapy without performing a complete history and physical examination. I recommend that you discuss this with your transplant physician. The most common drugs used with tacrolimus for immunosuppression after kidney transplantation would be prednisone … Continue reading

My husband needs a kidney transplant. How can you help us? He is 44 years old. He weighs 113 kilos and  he is 5’5 tall.

Your husband will need to be referred to a transplant center near you. This is generally done by the nephrologist caring for your husband. I suggest that you review the area on our website devoted to kidney transplantation. You can … Continue reading
