Osborne dismisses plea to limit EU migrants

George Osborne ruled out a last-minute promise to limit the numbers of new EU migrants today as officials lost an attempt to delay talks on Turkey’s accession to take place the day after the referendum.

Pressure is growing on Downing Street to promise more fundamental changes to the EU’s freedom of movement rules, including limits on numbers, to prevent voters worried about immigration opting for Brexit next week. Asked whether Mr Cameron was considering going beyond his pledge to curb EU migrants’ benefits, Mr Osborne said: “The short answer is no.”
