A Close Look at Close Reading for Teachers of Kindergarten - Fifth Grade

This 20 hour intensive course and follow up study group, provides authentic demonstrations, one on one professional training and models of student work.

Part 1 (15 hours)-Teachers need specific and responsive professional development by mentor teachers in an intensive and focused environment. This 15 hour intensive part of the course partners participants with experienced teacher mentors who will provide model lessons, authentic examples of teaching materials and student work. Teachers will be shown a variety of ways to document student growth and learning. The participants also need an opportunity to develop lessons and reflect on them with collegial support and critique.

Mentors will provide example lessons demonstrating:

  • >Close reading strategies
  • >academic vocabulary
  • >text based questions
  • >text evidence to support claims and opinions
  • >writing and speaking from sources
  • >electronic documentation of student work
Participants will have guided practice:
  • >choosing meaningful and engaging texts
  • >developing close reading lessons
  • >creating student activities
  • >developing classroom management strategies
  • >electronically documenting student work
Part 2 (5 hours)- Teachers need continued follow up support with their mentors before, during and after implementing of new Common Core E.L.A. aligned lessons before they are able to effectively shift classroom practices. Mentors will be in contact with participants as they return to their classrooms to pilot their lessons. Furthermore, all participants will come back together for a final sharing and reflection of products and student work.

Meals/Lodging Fee for Mar. 7-8: $226.92 (single) $200.23 (double per person) payable to the Carey Center. Call Sue at 518-797-5100. Professional Development underwritten by the Teaching is the Core grant.

Participants may be eligible for a $550 stipend. Evidence of classroom implementation required.
