Rylee Adamson #5

Blind Salvage

Rate this book
"My name is Rylee, and I am a Tracker."

When children go missing, and the Humans have no leads, I'm the one they call. I am their last hope in bringing home the lost ones. I salvage what they cannot.

Crossing into Ogre country is dangerous when you're a polite, respectful gal. Which means I already know I'm in for a wild ride, despite the back up I've brought along.

Even when things start to go sideways, and enemies close on us from every side, I still believe we have the upper hand.

How very blind can one person be when it comes to a salvage?

I'm about to find out.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.

I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)

Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.

I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)

As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.

Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.

Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

I’ve been hemming and hawing about this series since the get-go, but Shannon Mayer dropped all of the white noise in BLIND SALVAGE, and at long last got down to the nitty gritty. No new secondaries were added, and some of the plot threads started to make sense. The story also revolved mainly around the heroine for a change, and Rylee got her butt handed to her more than once which is exactly what I’ve been holding out for. Weird I know, however this book is what Urban Fantasy is all about in my opinion, and what RYLEE ADAMSON has been in short supply of—a good sucker punch to the guts!

A lot was unmasked in this novel; the cause of Milly’s betrayal, Berget’s master plan, Faris’ hidden agenda, and the Tracker prophecy gains steam. Yet, despite all of the above, this installment felt like a carefully honed edge. Past occurrences clicked, future possibilities were divulged, and the protagonist’s road to date albeit winding, no longer seemed as though it was simply dumb luck. It took five books for this series to come together, but come together it did, and in a rather dramatic way I might add. I guess in this author’s case, slow and steady wins the race!

Even though I’ve read hundreds of pages that have starred RYLEE ADAMSON, I still feel like I barely know her at all because her crew has been priority #1, and up until presently, at least one extra member has joined in every volume. Adamson had to go at it alone a great deal in BLIND SALVAGE, and when allies were needed they actually HELPED her instead of adding more problems to the pile. I was ecstatic with the amount of face time that fans got to take in, and that was the push I needed to sign my name on the dotted line to be counted among Rylee’s ride-or-die.

The O’Shea / romance saga was mostly put on hold which had me exhaling a sigh of relief; he still has some alpha issues to work out, and has yet to learn how to play nice with others, however Mayer drops a discreet grenade in this book, and if (when) it detonates, I might regret sending so much hate his way. The author also axes another character while taking steps to recoup a lost soul, so at this point I can only cross every body part I have, and pray that my favourites make it out of this series alive. Either way, I’m locked in, so do your worst, Shannon Mayer!

BLIND SALVAGE activated phase two of RYLEE ADAMSON, and it was 5-stars all the way.

I won't lie: I love the Rylee Adamson universe, and when Blind Salvage was released, I gleefully tossed aside the other books in my TBR pile (if you can figuratively send an ebook flying). The "child" that needs saving is a reminder of the harpy battle that brought Eve to Rylee's care, but this time with a twist. There's foreshadowing about a future at stake (har! pardon the pun) for Rylee's long-lost sister... building the kind of tension that makes me think, "ooo!" while reaching into the bowl of popcorn. Seriously, who needs DVDs when writers like Mayer offer so much scope for imagination?

But, a prophetic message from a Reader about Rylee's future knocked me back from the e-page. I love to hate the former-bestie wacked-out witch who is off limits because of her pregnancy; I am all on board with the tension surrounding the situation between Rylee and her sister, which hangs very much in the balance. There's so much to like: yes please, ogres! And yet the deal-breaker for me is the portent of loss ahead for the heroine and hero of books 1-5.

I'll rummage around my e-reader files for another urban fantasy series and wait to see how this dire prediction plays out. A little foreshadowing makes the reader feel smug about events as they unfold, but not when the predictions go so far as to cast a shadow over the romantic fate of the heroine. I'm all in favor of the Happily Ever After.

Action packed. Doesn’t pull any punches. An emotional roller coaster. Does end on cliffhanger, but the series is complete so you can dive into next book.

Blind Savage, by author Shannon Mayer, is the Fifth installment in the Rylee Adamson series. First, let me say that since I turned a bit older this year, I have decided to do what I want when it comes to reading what books I want to read. You never know when it might be your last day as a reviewer. If that means going back to earlier years from some of my favorite authors, so be it. Second, the Rylee Adamson books are not meant to be a standalone. As always, I suggest that you read these books in order so that you don't miss important things and events and characters.

After being thoroughly excited over the last book in this series and giving it 5 stars, I'm back to disliking the heroine. She had a blip of reasonable behavior in the last book, but now she's back to bitchy. *sighs*

Not much I can say about the plot because some major things happen. Rylee and O'Shea end up on a salvage (kid rescue) that seems pretty straight forward and ends up being anything but (as per usual in UF, right?). There are major implications for future books so this one is a bit of a bridge. And the implications are extreme, so I'm definitely going to read the next one.

It's a rough story this time. There are things I'm not happy about and there are hints at something potentially happening that make me VERY unhappy. How's that for cryptic? I guess I'm just saying that this series is not a must read for me and each book is a possible deal breaker. Since I'm putting off reading the next in the series (the last installment available), I won't know until later if I'm still on board. But if it goes the direction she's hinting at, I'm not seeing a strong future commitment from me. That's due to my personal preferences, anyone else's mileage may vary.

Not to put anyone off of this series, it's pretty good. But the first book of the series set the bar pretty high so I have expectations. :)

Wow. I am in shock over how the events in this book played out. This was nonstop action and there was so much foreboding for Rylee’s future that I’m not sure whether to be excited or to hide from it and pretend the danger lurking isn’t really there. Everything in this book happened for a reason and the danger really upped the ante for this series. No one is safe and this time, Rylee lost some close friends. It was heartbreaking and I know much worse is still to come. Excellent writing, fantastic plot and a must read series for fans of all things paranormal.

3.5 (still 4 stars given though, it needs a higher rating and more ppl to start reading it).
Yup, I like this series.

Again, the ending left me itching for the next one and as soon as I could I started reading it.
There were things that I didn't expect and, to say that after already reading 4 books in the series, is a really big plus in my book.

Why??

Tears galore, why so many deaths. I'm grieving more than Rylee she is one strong cookie. I'm trapped in this series it's like I NEED to know the ending, I just hope it's worth it.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in this book. There was a lot of senseless death, as well as a few characters brought in for a few pages to add further motivation and plot twists -- something that was not in short supply to begin with. These things just frustrated me and left me feeling quite dejected at the end. I also didn't feel that there was much in the way of character development. Liam seemed to be there purely as someone to boss others around and exert his dominance. Riley continued to fly by the seat of her pants and disregard much of the advice given to her by those who knew what they were talking about.

It was also annoying that those characters who spoke in Riley's mind (Calliope and Blaz) didn't have their dialogue in italics. I had to reread the dialogue each time because I didn't realise it WAS dialogue until I'd already read it.

It wasn't all negative though, there were quite a few positives too. There was plenty of action (albeit mostly gruesome and resulting in lots of death), we were introduced to some new and original characters, and we caught up with the characters we have got to know throughout the previous books.

I will read the next book because, despite my criticisms, the books are engaging and I do feel invested enough in the characters to want to know what happens to them.

I enjoyed this series, especially seeing how it intertwined with the Elemental Series. However, I'm not so sure my teenagers would enjoy it. There is a fair amount of language and gore that even I skipped through. In addition to that there are some sex scenes to skip over, and a few crude/lewd moments that I could have done without. I understood the language was a way of distinction with the Trackers in that world, and if it hadn't been for how well done the story was I don't think I would have finished the series.
I did appreciate the moral to the series, that love for family and friends really can help us conquer the darkness in our lives. I also liked how the chain of events that was her life was realized at the end in a way that led her to where she was, and how necessary those events were to building who Riley was and developing why she was loved so much by her"family ".

What a ride! Rylee's shit creek is getting wider and her paddle is straight up broke.

Rylee has enemies coming from everywhere. On one side, she has the vampire Child Empress wanting her to do her bidding and on the other side, the vampire Faris is forcing her into an impossible situation so she can do his bidding. Her loved ones keep being held hostage and we almost loose more than one of them. Rylee herself is mortally wounded and has to call in a few favors owed. Good thing she actually gained some allies in the Unicorns and the Ogres. Just in time for the demon Orion to start rearing his head.

My last thoughts about this book were "damn, shit is getting real" just before I realized that there was only 3 minutes left of the audiobook.

I am not a fan of leaving so many things dangling after the biggest action push and plot changes. It feels a lot like a cliff hanger. I wanted to give this one four stars, but that end just felt manipulative.

Oh my god, the ending! What a shocking finale!

Quick warning, spoilers ahead!

Ahhh Faris the bloody arsehole! Can someone please just kill him already?! Like now?! Rylee really should tell her family what she swore, I mean, not so the world knows but just enough, she cant fight all the battles on her own and maybe Liam could use his mad guardian skills and kill Faris.

Does Faris not know that Rylee has the blood of the lost in her? So maybe hes mistaken that drinking their blood will make him ruler of all vampirekind? A possible theory im throwing out there. Also can we please have some more information on these people!

I just cant believe the ending, and how many of the characters were killed off in like a page! Dox! :(

I really liked the Milly storyline, I mean if its true that shes been trying not to obey the demon and to juggle all these different plans while trying to save rylee, ill be very happy. And I hope that somehow she can redeem herself.

The fake out with Eve was annoying. I mean im not saying I want her to die but having her die and then miraculously be brought back to life just doesnt have the same shock value. Still, im glad shes still alive.

Its odd that the book is named blind salvage yet this doesnt happen untill the final 75percent, and only lasts a short time. (like 10percent of the book I think)

Okay now for my biggest gripe. Doran's stupid prophecy. Please let there be no love triangles or killing off of Liam! I would hate both so much! And also, the whole point is the prophecy's are possibilities and Rylee is immune, so even though Doran read her that one moment in time, the possibilty of Liam dying or her loving another could change through her actions and choices. (please dont ruin this series!)

Also, Liam's a guardian now and arnt they impossible to kill? I know the demon said he killed the beast of bodmin, but did he really or does he just think he did? I mean the guardians supposedly heal anything.

Also shouldnt Liam maybe have a chat with the other guardians to find out everything he can do now?

So yeah I obviously thought this book was brilliant, but please I cant take any love triangles or liam dying! Dont torture me like this!

I think im way too emotionally invested in this series.

"Blind Savage" reminds us that the bad guys just keep coming when you are Rylee Adamson. When your name is Rylee and you are the tracker foretold in prophecy, there is never a dull moment.

Rylee is contacted by Charlie, her intermediary. He has a new assignment for her that she will soon learn she has no choice but to take because her new client has Eve, the harpy in captivity. Oh, did I mention that her new client is a unicorn and wants Rylee to rescue his fold?

In order to save Eve, Rylee must venture into ogre country. As much as her ogre friend, Doc doesn't want to go to see his people he accompanies Rylee, Liam, and Alex. They discover the foal, Calliope has been taken by a mindless creature called a Roc. In order to rescue Calliope they must slip past a bunch of warring, sex crazed ogres and the Roc. What Rylee does not realize is that there is also something else waiting to be unleashed on her.

Once again the action in the book is superb but, I have to say that this book needed some serious editing. I was extremely put out with errors. On the other hand, you can feel the tension building to the upcoming epic battle. The question is who will be left standing in the end and with the losses that will surely come will Rylee be able to live with herself?

Although I am really enjoying this series, it is time for it to be wrapping up. In my humble opinion very few series can continues to remain fresh and on top after five or six book and this series is edging close to that number. I hope Ms.Mayer knows how to quit while she is ahead.

Where do I begin? This adventure was edge of your seat fantastic! So much action and suspense that kept you going to the end. We said goodbye (for the time being) to some characters and got a deeper glimpse into old friends, I'm looking at you Dox (tear). Rylee never ceases to amaze me with the depth of love and loyalty that she has for those that she cares for. She will do anything to protect them and keep them safe even if it means putting herself in harms way. I've always loved that about her. And I absolutely love that she has friends who will face down old memories and inner demons to make sure she's safe. This story was a way of cementing her friendships, love and new alliances.
I loved this series from the beginning and it continues to grow as the Rylee's story progresses. Shannon Mayer has a way of keeping you completely engrossed with Rylee and her life while finding a completely believable way of weaving in all types of mythical creatures are amazing into the storyline.
I am excited to see what is in store for Rylee, the prophecies and the general mayhem that seems to follows her everywhere.
Minor spoiler (if you can call it that): Shannon if you are reading this please, please, please, please for the love, do not give us a love triangle! I am so OVER them!! I am not happy that you even hinted that she may fall for another!!! I love Liam and would die if something happened to him or if they weren't together anymore. I mean geeze look at how long it took to get them together and everything they went through. End of rant!
Definitely worth 5 stars!!!

I seem to be having trouble getting into a lot of my books at the minute, mainly paranormal, which is why it's taken me a week or so to read the 200-odd pages in this, which is ridiculous really when I used to read that in several hours.

I think sometimes a bit too much happens in these books. Rylee and the gang jump from one scenario to another with no breathing space and sometimes they cope so well, it's a bit unrealistic.

I do like the series but I think it's going on hiatus for a bit.

Really..the acting by the seat of your pants is getting old. If you know you might end up getting people you care about hurt, why not take time and evaluate the situation. Also Rylee is suppose to have trust issues, but she's pretty trusting with the wrong guys.

Despite irritating qualities, great action read. Will continue with series because I'm curious where it will go. Hope she matures and accepts her destiny..

I listed to an audio book and that is my chief complaint. The narrator kept mispronouncing the name of the unicorn foal and it was infuriating. She kept saying 'cal-E-ope' instead of 'cal-I-O-pee' and it would take me out of the story every time. Otherwise I liked it.

I picked up the first book in the series, Priceless on a whim a few years ago. It was on sale for $0.79, I liked the cover and the blurb drew me in. I hadn't really read any urban fantasy prior to it but I've always loved fantasy and the idea of a more grown up fantasy grabbed me. And it was perfect. Everything I expected and so much more. I proceeded to demolish the remaining available books and Shannon Mayer has fast become one of my favourite authors. All of the books are full of fast paced, well written plots, hysterically funny lines and lots of heart. The characters worm their way under your skin until you're cheering with them at their successes and sobbing with them at their failures. Couldn't recommend the series more highly and will certainly be rereading many many times.

I really really really don't get it. How on earth does this book have a rating of 4.2+???
Does nobody actually account for basic logic in the ratings? Do plot holes, like all over the place, both minor and major factor in? Are obvious, impossible and ridiculous contrived events and situations simply to tie off a storyline even considered when giving out ratings?
Or are the important things like, "I'm Team Liam"! the only thing many actually consider or pay attention to when giving out 5 stars?
Seems that way from the majority of the 5 star reviews on here which is shameful.
5 out of 5 stars is a PERFECT book.
Enjoyment, captivating your attention and time, creativity, characters, storyline and yes, even structure.
And this book isn't even CLOSE to being a 5 star book in any way, shape or form. It's actually pretty awful.
The series was doing pretty good and I was enjoying it....it wasn't great, but I was decently enjoying it to kill time though it started going off the rails a bit towards the beginning of book 4 and that train was wobbling something fierce by the end of it. Instead of buckling the train down and saving the whole thing with book 5, Mayer went and embraced the ridiculous , went overboard with the bullshit and straight up got lazy with the details and storyline, so that in book 5, the train didn't just derail, but actually flew off the tracks, took out a strip mall, condominium and 2 streets worth of cars and because the train was carrying only gasoline and other highly flammable materials, the ensuing crash was so spectacular and disastirous, it took out any hope of any kind of a recovery or redemption. It was so awful that I would say she mailed it in but you can tell that isn't the case and there in lies the problem. She actually put an effort into the storyline, plot characters and breathe something fresh into the series...and somehow she completely missed the mark on every single one of them. It was actually quite impressive.
Such as thinking her lead character was a no nonsense, anti-hero, badass (and in an attempt perhaps to not make everyone wonder why this character wasn't named Katniss Everdeen) let's make her have a dirty mouth and edgier... going for that cool, cynical vibe.
Yet the character is easily one of the most obnoxious, and hard to get behind, lead characters I've ever read. She didn't come across as cool, edgy, no nonsense or anti-hero at all.
INSTEAD, she came across as stupid, ignorant, spoiled, prideful, self absorbed, foolish and downright obnoxious (as many people noted, this change was brought about in book 3). She is unnecessarily bitchy and rude in absolutely regular conversations and confrontational for the purpose of being confrontational. It's ridiculous. And really as a lead character, she is just annoying and obnoxious...sadly, she isn't the most annoying or obnoxious character in the series which really says something. That title easily goes to another major character and another major miss in how Mayer obviously thought she was writing the character one way but damn! It didn't translate and that is the sidekick, Jar Jar Binks... I'm sorry, Alex the submissive werewolf...yeah, which while creative doesn't mean that it isn't completely stupid. The Jar Jar comparison is apt though Alex, is far more pointless, annoying useless and obnoxious yet we're to believe that nobody in her "family" sees any of this and the reader is apparently meant to empathize and cheer for this team.
As far as logic, I get suspended belief for the sci-fi aspect of any book where it's called for.
It's crap like the terrible miss on the main character that just got way to much. She has all of these people continuously throwing themselves at her and becoming allies for life after interacting with her....
Yeah, bullshit.
This character wouldn't be alive. She wouldn't have anyone standing with her, helping her or fighting alongside of her. Sorry, if the character traits and qualities and behavior were real, this person would be hated by everyone...yet her family is loyal to death despite her showing no care except maybe an odd word here or there amongst the 100 insults, rudeness or other words which contradict tenfold a kind word from her.
And the once in a million kind word from her isn't backed up by any action because of her stupidity and the choices she makes due to her pride. Choices that see her "family" get hurt over and over. Eve especially. That Harpy would have killed her based on how Mayer portrays Harpies and she damn sure wouldn't have remained in the family...and she DAMN WELL sure wouldn't be loyal to the death, ride or die, committed to her "mentor" as she is. A mentor who through 3 books has taught the Harpy absolutely nothing, used her as a taxi only, pushed her aside to hang out by herself on missions, pushed her off on someone else to teach her, gotten her killed (someone else had to bring the Harpy back) and severely hurt twice because Adamson needed her as a taxi.
Mayer makes it seem like Adamson had no choice in these matters thus ignoring her own writing just a few pages back showing Adamson making the wrong choice again and thus creating the whole problem.
Don't get me started on the sister...so for 3 books, we're told about how this main character was forged and created by the events surrounding her little sister. Adamson, her whole being and life are entertained in her sister whom in book 4's twist, Adamson sits around doing nothing for 3 weeks doing nothing about the twist only to then choose the werewolf O'Shea over the sister and we're led to believe that she had to choose between the death of the 2...or how about (because of course she is) Adamson is prophesied by all of these groups as the savior of the world in which she stereotypically and emphatically proclaims (to show her humility of course) to be no hero (the one thing that I agree with her on).... meanwhile, she chooses the werewolf over pretty much the entire world when a vampire is going to kill Alex if she doesn't join him (which would usher in the starting of the doomsday crap)...and yes... the savior of the world chooses the obnoxious dog wolf...OVER, THE WORLD....
I mean, geez. 5 stars? People, get real. Sure it was a potentially entertaining story...one which Mayer (an author I actually like a lot) and her editor have completely botched with incompetence, laziness and a lack of planning/study.
This book was awful

This one had tears of joy and sorrow...

In this installment Rylee actually does two salvages successfully, but there is a price. Nothing comes easy for our Rylee. Her heart is her greatest strength, even when it's trying to be ripped out, once you are hers there is no limit to how far she will go for you.

The team is all present, however briefly in spots. Liam is all alpha as he deals with his inner problems, adapting to all members of the "crew" and being there for Rylee even when he's not a fan of the current plan. Doran is proving to be a very interesting character and becoming a stronger ally it appears. Milly's sharing of secrets gives us some answers and I feel sympathy for her, but trust is another story. Faris... he's bad, he's almost good and he's bad again; will the real Faris please stand up! Pamela is an excellent character she's already loyal and incredibly strong and I can only imagine what she will be as she grows; looking forward to seeing it! Eve and Alex are just lovable and there are hints that Eve may be very important. My only real complaint is there wasn't nearly enough of Alex in this one and he was sorely missed!

Red Hats, Giants, Ogres, Brownies, Unicorns, and Dragons; oh my! You will have to read Blind Salvage to see which ones bring the tears of laughter and which ones are tears of heartache.

Rylee and most of her "pack" finally make it back to the USA after fighting off Red Caps and a Giant, barely making it through the veil (portal).
A new assignment of rescuing/retrieving a missing child splits the group and the adventure continues. The child was surprising for me as I expected a little human.
As it turns out, Rylee must save three children, fighting ogres and Rocs and shadows and vampires, spanning from Washington state, Colorado, North Dakota, and London, through rain, water, mud, snow, and lava. Several enemies levy threats, deals, blackmail, complicated alliances, including responsible for deaths of those known and/or close of Rylee.
What an exciting read! How heartbreaking for me the reader! Each book I've read increases in action and adventure. I myself have become confused as what was seemingly a one dimensional character is now so complex that I am unsure of a his/her motive.
I have a deep fondness for Ms. Mayer's writing. I'm wanting the tale to end for my closure; yet I'd like the series to continue onward as the characters have become real breathing beings that I'd be at a loss at the saga's end. ***** (5 stars)

Ehhh, good, maybe not quite as good as the previous couple in the series. It felt like they were jumping all over the place, people dying, alliances made, friends becoming enemies, enemies becoming friends, then switching roles again. It remains true to the genre, a nice twist on it, where the author is using more than just werewolves and vampires, lots of epic mythological creatures are included. Love story continues to progress. Guess I'm saying that it's a good middle of the series book that keeps the action moving.

"Potty mouth" (main character's term) is highly prevalent in this book, almost every sentence has some form, and the supporting characters are starting to pick up her habit of inserting the 'F' word liberally into their speech too....frustrating because it's so unnecessary, as in the author can have a tough as nails character who can converse like a normal adult, yet she chooses to put extra rough language in....as in it doesn't even make sense sometimes when she's put the words in the sentence.

Ps. The prior book had a ton of grammatical mistakes, this one has a few, but not nearly as bad as that one.

Shattered Ending

A lot of the prophecies in the previous books play out in this one. In fact there are two salvages in this book, and both blindside Rylee in ways that bring the new big baddie Orion to the forefront.
In this book Rylee encounters Giants, Orges, Red Caps and more vampires. The freaking vampires need all put down, as neither are a good option. New Allies are made, and allies also fall as this is by far the bloodiest book yet. Mayer has Rylee pulled in several directions which is straining her focus, which is great as a plot device.

Now what would make these books five star reads is if Mayer gave me time to catch the quiet moments between the characters. I really do like these books but it's the quiet moments where characters connect on a deeper level that makes me care and mourn a characters passing. Milly's betrayal would sting if I had ever seen Milly as a true friend. But I as a reader only saw mean Milly. Mayer in my opinion needs to work on this, to reach the level of writers like Briggs and Andrews.
