OBERLIN (KPLC) - Allen Parish officials, led by Sheriff Doug Hebert, broke ground Thursday morning at the site of their long awaited new jail facility.

"We have waited more than a decade for this day," Hebert said.

"Lots of people said Allen Parish is never going to get a new jail," he added. "All those doubting statements come to an end as well."

The $8.3 million project is contracted to Troy Trahan, who said the new facility could be completed in 12-14 months.

"We hope to have our crews out here by the end of next week to begin construction," Trahan said.

Trahan said building a safety complex has added challenges, but he's ready to get started.

"I look forward to working with the Sheriff and the parish to get the facility completed for the people of Allen Parish."

KPLC's Gerron Jordan will have more on later editions of 7 News.
