Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced the appointment of four new members to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors Tuesday. Whittington W. Clement, Tammy Snyder Murphy, James V. Reyes and Jeffrey C. Walker will begin four-year terms on July 1.
Rector George Martin expressed great pleasure in welcoming the new board members.
“[Each member] holds a deep passion for the University and for higher education,” Martin said in a press release. “Their collective expertise in the public and private sectors will serve the University of Virginia and the commonwealth well.”
University President Teresa Sullivan also congratulated the incoming board members.
“Each new appointee brings considerable experience and knowledge to the Board of Visitors,” she said. “As we approach the University’s bicentennial, I look forward to working with these new members and with the entire Board as we continue to implement the priorities of the Cornerstone Plan while advancing the University’s mission of education, research, patient care and service.”
Clement, Murphy, Reyes and Walker will replace Rector George K. Martin, Allison Crynor Dinardo, Dr. Stephen P. Long and John L. Nau III. Three of the appointees — Clement, Murphy and Walker — are graduates of the University.
Clement, of Richmond, Virginia, is a partner and head of state government relations practice group at Hunton & Williams LLP. Clements holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a law degree from the University, and is a founding trustee and member of the U.Va. College foundation, which supports the University’s College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. He is also a former member of the University’s Alumni Association Board of Managers and of the Jefferson Scholarship National Selection Committee. Clements was recently a member of the University’s Ad Hoc Group on University Climate and Culture.
Murphy, of Red Bank, New Jersey, graduated from the University with a bachelor’s in English and communications. A recent co-founder of state policy think tank New Start New Jersey, Murphy is also a charter trustee at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Murphy’s family foundation recently contributed to the financing of an endowed chair in the name of University history professor Julian Bond. She is also a former member of the College Foundation.
Reyes, of Washington, D.C., chairs the Board of Directors of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, D.C, and is an international food and beverage wholesaler. Reyes holds a bachelor’s degree in economics, government and politics from the University of Maryland.
Walker, of New York, is the vice chair in the United Nations Envoy’s Office for Health Finance and Malaria, and is a partner in the Bridge Builders investment fund. Walker holds a bachelor of science degree from the University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He was also executive-in-residence at Harvard Business School and a lecturer at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Walker serves on the board of the McIntire School of Commerce Foundation at the University, which he led for 10 years. Walker is an emeritus trustee and former chair of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, and was chair of the University’s Council of Foundations.
The four new board members will join Mark T. Bowles, who will replace Dr. Edward Miller. Miller announced April 13 his intentions to step down at the end of the term.
