House Democrats’ Make It In America plan is focused on creating jobs, strengthening our manufacturing sector, and growing our economy. Several pieces of upcoming legislation, including the reauthorization of the Export- Import Bank, offer an opportunity for Congress to work together towards bipartisan proposals that benefit American businesses and families.
EXPORT-IMPORT BANK
The Export-Import Bank helps create jobs, expand manufacturing, and make our economy more competitive by helping manufacturers access markets and sell their products not just at home but around the world. That’s why reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank has been added as a key priority of the Make It In America plan. Taking action well before the Export-Import Bank’s authorization expires on September 30, 2014 will give certainty to businesses and provide important resources to keep American exporters competitive. There is wide-ranging support for a reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank:
Tom Buffenbarger, President of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers: “As the only federal institution that was created to support U.S. Jobs, the International Assoc. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers fully supports the U.S. Export-Import Bank and we applaud Congressman Hoyer for making the bank’s reauthorization a key component of the Make It In America plan. The U.S. Export-Import Bank makes it possible for U.S. workers to compete in the global market place.” [4/9/14]
Tom Donohue, President and CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce: ‘The Ex-Im Bank is an important engine for job creation in this country and is vital to companies of every size. The work of the Ex-Im Bank is essential to put trade opportunities in the hands of American companies and workers.” [4/9/14]
Sean McCormack, Vice President of Communications, Boeing Government Operations: “Boeing manufactures its industry-leading products right here in the U.S. We appreciate efforts by Congressman Hoyer and other members of Congress to keep U.S. companies competitive in the global economy and sustain jobs in the U.S. The Export-Import Bank is an important competitive tool for U.S. exporters, large and small, to facilitate the sale of U.S. goods and services. It is imperative that the Bank be reauthorized in a timely manner. With over 60 export credit agencies around the world actively supporting their exporters, allowing Ex-Im to lapse would be akin to unilateral disarmament.” [4/9/14]
National Associations of Manufacturers: “Manufacturers, especially small and medium-sized manufacturers, cannot afford a lapse in the financing support that helps them stay competitive in the global marketplace. … Unfortunately, manufacturers are already facing the consequences of the uncertainty surrounding Ex-Im’s reauthorization. … The NAM appreciated Rep. Hoyer’s outstanding leadership during the last reauthorization of Ex-Im, and we are very pleased that he continues to make this issue a priority. It is a critical tool that allows our small, medium and larger manufacturers to compete globally. Rep. Hoyer announced at a press conference earlier today that he is including Ex-Im Bank reauthorization in his manufacturing initiative.” [4/9/14]

USW Voices Support for “Make It In America” Agenda
[Released April 9, 2014]
(Pittsburgh) -- United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard issued the following statement today:
“The Make It In America agenda focuses on the most critical economic issues facing our country today: Expanding production while creating and retaining jobs in America. Since it was announced, the agenda has helped provide hope to the millions of manufacturing workers, their families and communities.
“The Make It In America agenda addresses many of the pressing issues facing the manufacturing sector such as ensuring that our nation’s budget priorities fuel innovation, production and job creation. It will make sure that we can expand exports and respond to the predatory practices of our trading partners. It would also reauthorize the ‘America Competes Act,’ first signed into law by President Bush, to improve our nation’s competitiveness.
“Unfortunately, the many common-sense, job-creating bills comprising the Make It In America agenda are being blocked by the Republicans. Millions of manufacturing jobs have been lost and more than 60,000 facilities have been shuttered, but Congressional Republicans continue to focus on ideological initiatives and renaming post offices. It’s time they went to work putting America back to work.
“The USW supports Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-5th-MD) in announcing the Make It In America agenda, which if enacted, will help create and maintain good family supportive jobs in a vibrant manufacturing economy right here at home.”
The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries that include metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining and the service and public sectors. For more information on: www.usw.org/.
