As part of National Rail Enquiries (NRE) on-going aim to provide the best and most useful information to the train traveller, it has partnered with University College London and Microsoft to analyse the results from Darwin, its real time train prediction system to identify trends that could further improve predictions.

Working with Dr Dean Mohamedally, a lecturer in the Software Systems Engineering Group, Department of Computer Science at UCL and a team of Advanced Masters students, NRE is using Microsoft technology to:

·    Measure the accuracy of forecasts
·    Review the historical performance of individual train services
·    Find stations where the forecasts could be improved

The changes and updates made to National Rail Enquiries’ multi-platform offering all originate from customer observations or technical enhancements and designed to facilitate easier journey planning and converting online.
