The new grand chief of a large First Nations group in Manitoba says he wants five urban reserves inside Winnipeg set up within two years.
Terry Nelson made the comments one day after his election as the head of the Southern Chiefs' Organization.
Nelson foresees the first urban reserve agreed upon within six months. The outspoken chief says he is confident deals can be established with Ottawa and the province under the Treaty Land Entitlement Process.
The chief says the urban reserves would be business-oriented developments creating 2,000 jobs, while generating tens of millions of dollars a year
Nelson has participated in several actions of civil disobedience over the years, including blockades of railways and roads.
He says he does not want to be confrontational in his negotiations over the new reserves.
