Godin: Connect, Lead — and Leap

Even a business model or industry that’s perfect won’t stay that way forever. But having the vision and courage to anticipate and create demand and go beyond just changing with the times can be revolutionary. That was the core message of best-selling author Seth Godin in his March 24 keynote address at the NAPA 401(k) Summit.

“Almost everyone you’re trying to reach doesn’t think they have a problem you can solve,” said Godin. What to do about that? He advocates connecting, but in a manner that treats different people differently.

Not only that, noted Godin, they also need something at the heart of what advisors offer — direction. Said Godin, “what people are telling you is, ‘We need you to lead.’”

And Godin advocates a healthy dose of courage. “Leaping with danger is the only leap that matters,” he said. He also advised, “Be vulnerable. Have the guts to say to a client, ‘I don’t know the answer to your question, but let’s find out together.’”

Godin exhorted attendees to seize the opportunity that is theirs. “Do you know how many people want your seat? You don’t have a job — you have a platform.”
