DX50 Bug List, Wish List Fix
Sep 14, 2013 at 4:09 PM Post #286 of 1,212
Hey guys I figured I'd create this thread so any owners of the DX50 can report the bug issues they are encountering with the DX50. Try to be as specific as possible and simply forward the link from this thread over to ibasso so they can check what is going on and implement the fixes appropriately.

Good luck.

Hi lots of head-fiers came up with bug lists, would you think it'll be great to put a consolidated follow up list on the first page and knock them down as they get ironed out for every one to see?

Just a suggestion.

Would be nice if there was a delay or something before the volume is turned on, while the device is powering so that there isnt a loud pop during startup =/

<<SNIP>>
- Gapless
  - Close (no gap)
  - 5 seconds (why?)
  - 10 seconds (why?)

<<SNIP>>

One of you DX100 (former) owners my be able to confirm this, but I believe the 5 and 10 sec is the amount of buffer time the DAP spools up so the track gap is eliminated. At least that is what I am sure I read somewhere... it keeps getting asked so nice to clarify this.

That's what I've been assuming. It does seem slightly pointless to have this choice though, since 5 sec works just as well as 10 sec... it would be better just to have On and Off. Unless there is a difference that someone could explain to me.

I got my 64GB card today and learned how to deal better with the immature firmware. Even after editing out all single quotes from file names and all meta data many of my albums don't scan and the scanning process aborts pretty randomly right now. However, I found that when I select each file after the other in the directory browser they get added to the database and from then on are available. Doing this incrementally is tedious but doable however every time when I add content to the SD card and pull the USB cable the player offers two options

Scan SD card or Browse Files. Ibasso really offers you a blue and a red pill. By picking Scan SD card the database gets reset and you wake up with your database wiped clean and the unfortunate prospect of repeating the manual import process. However, if you select Browse files you can just add the new files and keep growing your database.

This is a strange workaround but it seems to work for me while I am waiting for better firmware. The scanning process seems really brain dead. Instead of skipping the files that the parser can't process but continue the overall process the firmware just stops on the first issue.

Cheers

I'm impressed with iBasso. I emailed a few more wish list things tonight and got a reply shortly afterwards... The reply was welcome news I think for us all... Especially since it's Sunday night there.

Hi John,
Thank you for your sugestions.
I think we have to solve bugs first, and improve the supplied formats.
We will consider the new features when the firmware is more completed and stable.

Sincerely
iBasso Audio

I want soundstage become more deeper. Also more melodic and little warm notes in the sound signature, like Teclast T51 and iHiFi760,812,960 can.
It will be perfect player in all departments.

Hi,

got the 3rd batch and so far satisfied, except that the media scanning time takes so long whenever I switch on the device and seems still can't play the music with file name that contained the symbol '.  also I'm not sure if this is my problem or not, but some how when i play the music it can't display the album image.  hope someone can help answering my queries.

many thanks

After trying to mod DX50, I'm going to stop now and enjoy the music!

The DX50 seems very well developed to be a niche device much like the fuzzy logic washing machine. It will have one job and do that well, but also has less brain to do anything else, making it very dumb device to make use of android and linux kernel. The whole device is programmed as MangoPlayer (/system/bin/MangoPlayer + additional libraries + data files), the bootloader/kernel loads this MangoPlayer, which is native android application seemed to be coded in C++, I tried to disassemble it and found from initial booting to system shutdown is coded in this player, which includes drawing the screen. To my knowledge it doesn't use any APIs android provides, since from init to shutdown is controlled by native application,  so trying to run android launchers, apps will require much hacking and attempting. As my first android device, it was fun! I will leave it to experts to bring some real android goodness.

Initial firmware came with recovery that is rooted, connected to ADB and showed much promise. I was able to install ClockWorkMod recovery, able to backup/restore. The I soft-bricked my device by corrupting bootloader by trying to install custom ROM from similar rockchip based device, thankfully I was able to get my system back by using RKBatchTool. Version v1.15 closed ADB connection, for those adventure souls who wants to have CWM recovery, ADB, even original v1 recovery (if you have dump), you can try (and could become proud owner of expensive brick), unpack the update.img (use XDA forum), add generic CWM recovery from androtab.info, repack it, update through DX50 or RKBatchTool v1.7 with rockchip usb drivers.

A couple of things I've noticed that could be added/fixed...

1. Lack of Artist -> Album view. That way, scrolling through artists would be smooth, and the albums by that artist could have their art displayed (the most albums/singles I have by one artist is around 20, and I could stand the slower performance on that small list more than a list of 1000 albums). This is also generally my preferred way to browse music.

2. A paused file automatically resumes playing as soon as a jack is plugged into the line out port. I ever want a song I've paused to resume playing until I'm ready.

3. Somewhat related to the point above, I'd also prefer it if there was at least an option to stop the DX50 from playing files automatically after pressing the 'Previous Track' button.

4. A way to force the DX50 to scan the Card, OTG etc. I've experienced a very annoying glitch where the scan stops prematurely, and hasn't actually completed the scan. The only way to force a scan is by restarting, or connecting it to a computer while turned on. Adding this as an option would just be helpful.

5. Playlists/Favourites Playlist. The Cowon J3 didn't have great playlist support, but it did have a 'Favourites' section. This was particularly helpful when I wanted to just add my favourite tracks and listen to them in situations I couldn't safely change track. This is supposedly coming soon.

6. Battery charge indicator percentage. The lack of this feature has annoyed me on phones since the days of Symbian. A percentage is a much better visualisation of the level of charge. Shown in a photo previously released by iBasso.

7. An actual fix for the apostrophe problem. Some have reported that the apostrophe problem has been fixed, mine however has not been. I imagine that there may be several apostrophes in the codeset (for the life of me I can't remember what the standards for typefaces are, UTC or something. If anyone knows and could correct me I'd be grateful), and only one was fixed. Or, more likely, botched release.

8. The Gapless options should really be explained more. 'Close' clearly means 'Off', whereas the '5 sec' and '10 sec' options clearly activate it, but with seemingly no difference. Would be nice if iBasso (or anyone who knows, for that matter) could clarify this, as well as change 'Close' to 'Off'.

9. It would be nice to have some indication that something is actually happening on the 'Scanning Media' screen. Yesterday, after updating my DX50 to the latest firmware, I let it scan for 40 minutes and it had only reached 'Daft Punk'. How do I know it wasn't doing anything?:

10. After deleting the 'LOST.DIR' folder that the DX50 persists in creating, it scanned down to R in 8 minutes. One final scan completed it. Therefore, having a progress bar (or anything that indicates it is actually doing something) would be very beneficial for times where it can be doubtful. Not necessary for iBasso to include it, but would be reassuring. They could also try to fix the 'LOST.DIR' problem, since it does appear to be causing problems both with scanning and installing firmware.

11. Fix the Coaxial output to work with files above 24bit 48Khz.

12. Fix the slow playing 192Khz file problem (I don't actually have any 192Khz files to test this with, but others have mentioned it, so I thought I should include it, for the sake of being thorough).

And now for really nit-picky things:

13. A font with consistent kerning. I'll admit, this is pretty OCD, but looking at fonts where letters are unevenly spaced grinds my gears. Especially the amount that the DX50 does. Look at 'Internal storage' and 'SD Card' in the directory option. 'Internal' looks to be written as 'Intemal', and there is a large space between the 'c' and 'a' in 'card'.

14. Slightly less annoying to me than this is the fact that different letters have different thicknesses. Look at 'Now Playing' for an example. The 'w' is so thin on the right side it actually looks anemic. Interestingly, the left side of the 'w' looks normal', so I can only assume that a re-sizing error is the problem.

15. The font thickness problem also exists on the 'Home' page (where you can see the song playing). 'My Music' looks bolded after 'My M', with the capitalised Ms also suffering from anemia. 'Settings' is also noticeably thicker.

Added after editing:

16. A feature that automatically scans files added through USB, so that you no longer need to perform a manual scan (and also a way to turn this feature off).

17. Better error handling. The apostrophe problem was only discovered by experimentation with tags and filenames. It would be helpful if iBasso could add an error system that not only handles errors in a better way (i.e. not causing so many resets, frozen screens etc), but gives the user a notification or error screen/pop-up that tells them what has happened and why (if it's a technical problem like Windows' old BSODs, it would still give iBasso something to work with. All we have now is a rough idea how these errors are caused). If there had been a pop-up saying something like: 'Error: Could not play file due to invalid characters', that would be much more helpful than not playing the file AND not telling the user why.

Anyone got any other bugs to fix or features to add? I'm sure I will come up with some more, but for now I'll call this the 'abridged list of grievances'.

The three font issues are so minor in the scheme of things that I wouldn't care a lot if they didn't ever get fixed - on the proviso that the first 12 I mentioned were fixed/added.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I had a glitch earlier today. I connected the DX50 to the computer, and was trying to delete the thumbs.db file that Windows automatically creates. I deleted it, and then the player became non-responsive to actions done on the computer (such as opening folders). I disconnected the DX50, turned it off and it turned on again automatically, repeating this every time I turned it off. Only a battery pull fixed it. This leads me to believe that it thinks it was still connected via USB, or handling a charging/power error incorrectly (hence why it turned itself on without me turning it on).

Number 17 could be an issue though, considering how buggy the firmware is at the moment.

OK the dx50 GUI is basically functional but it has some weird things going on and I'm trying to figure out what could be improved here, things we can suggest/encourage iBasso to implement.

1) Able to drill down from Artist to Album list.

2) Tracks in All Music, Artist, Album, and Genre sections are listed by File name instead of Title (from tags). I don't get this. Library should be all tag based outside of the Directory section.

3) Need some way super scroll through long lists of tracks, like 'grabbing the sidebar' along the right or lefthand edges of the screen

4) Text that is too long for one line should scroll .. i have DAPs from 10 years ago that do this

5) EQ - more than 6 steps up and down, ability to set custom EQ bands (ex. Rio Karma)

6) Long press on item starts that playing. Ex: choosing an Artist, Genre, Album, etc... instead of having to click through and start the first song in the list. Or long press on an item opens a context menu with "Play now / Enque next / Rate this / Delete / etc."

7) Search function - text search for tracks as shown in dx50 promo screens. Select characters with a basic onscreen keyboard.

8) Now Playing screen
  - Make EQ activate and cycle through profiles by touching the left top corner (where the indicator appears now when the EQ is actived through Settings).
  - There has space for 3rd virtual button between MyMusic and Settings. Suggest making this a customizable function from a list of options in Settings

9) Bookmarking, automatic and manual

10) Able to delete or rate tracks. I like to download new music in bursts and then sort out what i want to keep later.

11) copy tracks & folders to/from OTG device (or is this already possible?)

12) re-arrange tracks in playlist. Long hold on item to select for drag n drop?

13) better use of album art - larger display in Now Playing, behind the text, or touch the album art to show full screen.

14) Optional feature for crossfading tracks (ex. Rio Karma)

Also, the current option to set 5 or 10 second gap seems completely pointless, is there any use case? just make zero gap the default and get rid of this section in Settings

Is there anyone who has already sent these suggestions/bug lists to iBasso?

Is there anyone who has already sent these suggestions/bug lists to iBasso?

I've sent them some but I focused on issues I identified were important to me. However, I am pretty sure they are aware of most of the more critical ones. See my post above that contains their reply about fixing the bugs first then turn attention to enhancements. Even so nothing to stop others from reporting their wish lists. The more they get the more likely they will try to fix them.

Sure I just sent mine and let's see what their response will be.

A quick response from iBasso:

Q: Does DX50 read any image files (e.g. .jpg/.jpeg/.png) located in the
same directory as the songs. so that the album arts can be displayed?
a) If yes, what are the formats supported and how should I name the
file? (e.g. folder.jpg/cover.png/front.jpeg)
b) If no, how can I make DX50 display the album art in the "now playing"
screen and "album" list?

A:The DX50 can display album artwork that is included in the ID3.
It cant work as what you mentioned. But we will consider this feature on the future updates.

Q:
Here are the problems, with the newest firmware v1.1.5:

1) DX50 still cannot play songs with ' (apostrophes).
2) DX50 cannot display Korean characters - the Korean characters are
displayed as squares (i.e. 口口口)
3) The songs in an album are arranged not according to their track
numbers, but their song titles.
a) For example, if there are three songs - 1. CDE, 2. ABC and 3.BCD,
DX50 will play the album in the sequence of 2. ABC, 3. BCD and 1. CDE.
b) Even if the files are named as 1. CDE, 2. ABC and 3. BCD, DX50 will
not follow the sequence of 1, 2 and then 3.

A: The bugs that you mentioned will be fixed on the new firmware that we will release today or tomorrow, except the Korean support.  The Korean will be added in the following firmware.
