In Eric Gelinas the Devils already have one of the best, young offensive defensemen in hockey.
But what if the Devils could add another young blue liner with the surname Gelinas to an already deep pool of defense prospects?
Well, Lou Lamoriello has that opportunity should he want it.
Over the last 10 days or so I've had the pleasure of covering the Memorial Cup in its entirety. While I was there several undrafted/unsigned players stood out for various reasons, and one guy that intrigued me was Val d'Or defenseman Guillaume Gelinas (note: they're not related).
Gelinas is a 20-year-old who just finished his overage season in the QMJHL. Combine regular season totals with playoff numbers and you have a guy who scored 34 goals and recorded 126 in 91 games.
He's a little undersized for a defenseman at 5'10 and less than 190lbs, but he's feisty, will battle against much bigger opponents and has shown ability to move the puck and put up points that you simply can't ignore.
Gelinas may never make the NHL, but he has plenty of talent, and has earned himself a shot somewhere with his incredible overage season.
I think it'd be incredibly fun to one day see Guillaume Gelinas feeding Eric Gelinas one-timers on the power play, so let's hope it can somehow come to fruition.
One way or the other, I think he's going to get a contract somewhere.
