SoCal water district makes you a short-shower playlist — What songs should be added?
How long do you spend in the shower? With California's drought, there's a big push to end those long, luxurious showers, and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is encouraging you to limit your showers with their new Water Lover's Station on Pandora.
They say you should be looking to have five-minute showers, but the station includes songs that are significantly shorter, like Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle," which means you'll be speeding through that shower in under 3 minutes. They also note that Prince's "Purple Rain" is on the list (due to rain theming), but hopefully they're rocking the 4-minute radio edit, not the 8 minute and 41 second album version.
They're hitting the nail on the head, with many of the songs being about rain or water — TLC's "Waterfalls," Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" and the even more perfect Boyz II Men's "Water Runs Dry" (get it?) all make a splash — though they throw in a few extras that aren't quite so water-logged.
MWD spokeswoman Sherita Coffelt tells KPCC that there are currently about a hundred songs on the list, so that should be enough showers to last you until almost winter.
It's also an attempt to reach a diverse audience, with a Spanish-language version on the service Uforia in development set to come out later this summer.
Submit your fast-shower songs
When it comes to shower music, what songs do you think should be on such a list? Some guidelines:
- No songs over 5 and a half minutes — sorry about your favorite art-rock songs that take up an entire album with no breaks
- Themed songs are great — if you can get a mention of water, heat, drought, snow, California or some other sort of reference in there, all the better
- They have to be something that you either like or think would help you have the energy to get through that shower even faster (For reference, go listen to KPCC reporter Sanden Totten taking a "Navy shower")
