A man in his 20s is facing charges in connection with a human trafficking investigation conducted in Montreal and Toronto.

The investigation began in December, Toronto police said in a statement Wednesday.

Police allege that a 19-year-old woman met a man in Montreal, and was recruited into the sex trade. The woman said two other people, a man and a woman, were involved at the time.

The 19-year-old was transported between Toronto and Montreal for the purposes of prostitution, police said. She was also beaten and sexually assaulted several times.

Officers said she was physically restrained, and not allowed to seek medical attention for her injuries. Her identification and money were taken, police said.

Police said two Toronto residents were charged with trafficking-related offences in January.

Albert Markareh, 29, faces eight charges, while Iman Ben Youssef, 21, faces five.

Last week, police acted on a warrant to enter a residence where they believed the remaining suspect was living. As they executed the warrant, police said they found a "large quantity" of narcotics in the home.

The third person, 28-year-old Lawrence Mikaelian, was arrested on Thursday, Sept. 24. He has been charged with 13 offences, including trafficking, assault and possession of illegal substances.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Police said they believe there may be more victims. They asked anyone with more information to contact them at 416-808-7474, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
