This is one of those books that will keep you up all night when you should be sleeping but you won't mind a bit. The characters are all larger than life and the setting is so vividly described you feel like you're there (and coming from a girl in the tropics that's saying something).
We feel Solina's trepidation and grief when she first sets foot in Alaska and we learn all about the friends of her deceased brother along with her. Some are friendly, some are stand-offish and one or two are instantly likeable, but they all seem to be hiding something.
The Norse mythology scattered throughout the story, especially towards the last half of the book, is fascinating and beautifully depicted. The mix of modern day life and the mythology of the past works particularly well and it all came across as very believable.
My only complaint about the book is that it left me wanting more. Come on book two!
This is a great read and I heartily recommend it to anyone who likes a good adventure story with a taste of romance and magic.

Sometimes you just need to get out of reality for a while and read a good paranormal fantasy. It is not my most favourite genre, but I really enjoyed this fun mythological/paranormal fantasy Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel.
Solina travels to Alaska following the death of her brother, to organise his belongings and his apartment. While she is there she spends time with her late brothers best friend Val and his friends, and their employer Thorin. It soon becomes apparent that whomever killed her brother is now after her. She has dreams of wolf-like creatures and discovers that her brother was killed by being torn to shreds by a wolf. Soon she is on a quest to discover who she really is and who she can trust, and is running for her life.
First of all I had to comment on the cover. I love it! I'm not sure why it grabbed me so much when I saw it, but it suits the book perfectly and is absolutely gorgeous!
I really enjoyed this book. It was well written, REALLY well written. The book grabbed me from the start!
I loved all the characters and it was great to watch them and their relationship with Solina develop. I loved Skyla, I found her to be one of my favourite characters. And I enjoyed Solina's character. Even though she did a few things that annoyed me.
I am not a big fan of love triangles in books. They make me cringe. A lot. But Laurel is clever here, she makes it a love triangle without having any of the characters actually commit. So its not a love triangle exactly.... Its hard to explain, It just works. I love the tension between the characters, especially Solina and Thorin. I was hoping that a bit more would happen between them, but she is obviously saving that for subsequent books!
I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half. I was actually expecting it to be a werewolf story, but it most certainly isn't. It is so much more than that. Once the truth came out and Solina discovered who she was, it started to get a bit too mythological for my liking. Its just not stuff I'm particularly interested in and a lot of the characters and mythology was over my head. However it wasn't all about that and still had an awesome story line, so I still enjoyed reading till the end!
Speaking of the end! Loved the ending! I will absolutely read the next one as I want to know what happens!!
Would I recommend it?
Yup! For fans of paranormal fantasy. It was a fabulous story, a great escape from reality for a while and was really well written. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thanks to the author Karissa Laurel for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I received a copy of this book from Red Adept Publishing, LLC via NG in return for an honest review.
I really liked this book! Norse mythology and suspense enthusiasts, you'll get a real kick out of this book!
let's dive into the plot!
How did I go from a simple girl who works as a baker to being hunted all in a matter of days?
Solina Mundy is as normal as they get. She wakes up, bakes, craves for parent approval and loves her twin brother Mani with all her heart. He's always been there for her.
He's always protected her.
He's always loved her. Until the day Solina has a portentous dream of wolves and death,
She is then notified that Mani has died of a horrendously at the claws of animals.
determined to uncover what happened, Solina goes on a trip to Alaska.
There she meets two men who may have all the answers she craves- Aleksander Thorin and Val Wotan. The more Solina uncovers, the more trouble nip at her heels until the moment she has become the number one target. A wolf seeks to devour her life essence. All the sudden, her life is irrevocably changed to the dawn of Norse Gods and goddesses, Valkyries, grief, bitterness, murders, love and...Powers. Solina's life was never as it seemed.
This book was really cool.
honestly, i really enjoyed that! It had a part of norse mythology that i didn't know about so imagine my utter excitement when i researched and saw that this author was spot on in her concepts and mythology! Way to go Laurel, I can see you did extensive research in this area and it paid off brilliantly!
The writing was brilliant too, it's what made the entirety of the experience in this book so wonderful. The writing just sucked you into the story, it engaged you and you felt invested too.
Okay, the characters- I really liked them!
Solina-
"Solina either has her hands stuffed in a batch of dough or her nose stuck in a book,
Solina is a great character! I doesn't hurt that she sounds like she could be my twin from her sarcasm to her hobbies! She definitely has depth and guts, she knows what she has to do and even though she's scared she won't let that stop her from reaching her goal. She is loyal to a fault and she is determined and won't take anyone's crap.
Most of all though, I loved her sarcasm and wit:-
"Birds are portentous of many things," Kalani answered.
"Death," Inyoni said.
"The arrival of a deity," Kalani said.
"(or) the sighting of a tasty horde of gnats," (solina) said.
I kept seeing Rapunzel and Flin Ryder when they were like:
"Something brought you here, call it what you will, fate. destiny."
"A horse."
She's a funny character!
the rest of the characters also had depth and many layers! I'm really looking forward to knowing more about them in the next installment.
Okay now Romance.
I would say that there actually isn't much of one. Like no swoon, oh my goodness romance...not yet at least, but it's coming up for sure! this book was the character getting to know the guys which i respect immensely, there was no insta-love in here.
We have two guys Val Wotan and Aleksander Thorin.
I will admit partiality to Thorin...it's not my fault, the viking looking kind of guy (romanticized-version of course) is just darn attractive!
so there is the potential for a romance but not one exactly.
I also wouldn't totally call this a love triangle, it is in a way and it isn't- i know that makes no sense but you'll have to read it to understand.
other than that, that ending! yowzzaaa! must.have.the.next.book!

Fantastic urban fantasy

Four months after her twin brother's murder, Solina Mundy leaves her quiet North Carolina home to clean out his apartment in Alaska. Though the police have designated the case as unsolved, she soon begins to suspect that his friends know more than they're letting on. What's more, she's been getting strange nightmares--visions of a wolf devouring her brother that seem to have come true. She soon discovers that there's more to Mani's world than he told her--legacies of gods and monsters from Norse legends come to life--and that she herself has a greater part in it than she could have imagined.
Okay, who doesn't love a good story of ancient mythology come to life in the modern world? I'm a sucker for this kind of thing, and Karissa Laurel's MIDNIGHT BURNING really hit the spot. The story follows the classic fantasy hero's journey... ordinary character gets jerked out of her banal life by unthinkable circumstances, discovers that she has supernatural abilities, and finds herself at the center of huge, world-ending conflict... But does so with unique flair.
Pause for disclosures. *clears throat* Karissa and I share a publisher, Red Adept Publishing. We're also buddies. However, neither Karissa nor Red Adept asked me to write this review, and all this gushing represents my honest opinion of the book.
Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, flair. MIDNIGHT BURNING is full of it. Solina herself is a mild-mannered character, a shy girl thrust into circumstances she's completely unprepared for, but the supporting cast is as full of color and energy as a laser show. There's Skyla, a tough-as-nails ex-Marine with the spirit of a modern day Valkyrie who was Mani's close friend and who refuses to rest until she and Solina uncover the truth behind his death. There's Val Wotan, Mani's coworker and buddy whose easy charm and swoon-worthy looks spell irresistible trouble. And then there's Aleksander Thorin, Mani's boss, who's more the strong-and-silent type, but who exudes a mysterious, magnetic kind of allure. As their surnames suggest, Val and Thorin turn out to be closely connected to their legendary Norse namesakes. Very closely connected.
I couldn't blame Solina for stumbling into that love triangle--who wouldn't have trouble picking between the unreliable but oh-so-charming playboy and the standoffish but oh-so-magnetic billionaire?--and for once, I seriously didn't know who Mr. Right was supposed to be.
But the romance part was only a small part of a much more complex story, full of rich worldbuilding that takes Norse myths of old and expands them into the modern world. And detective-story-like mystery-solving as Solina and Skyla seek the truth behind Mani's death. And fantasy adventure as Solina explores her newfound superpowers... and finds herself the target of villains who literally want to end the world. Talk about stakes!
As the story progresses, Solina grows and develops as a character, and I loved watching her emerge from her brother's shadow to become a kickass heroine in her own right. Between the plot and the world and the characters, I was completely hooked and found myself reading every chance I got (I was seriously pulling out my Kindle to sneak an extra page or two every time I had even five minutes to myself).
By the time I reached the end, I was bummed it was over. Fair warning: this book ends on a cliffhanger. The good news: The sequel, ARCTIC DAWN, is now out! Plus, rumor has it that Karissa's working on a prequel novella that will tell Mani's story...

This is one of those books that you just don't want to put down. The story is perfectly paced and moves at breakneck speed. The characters are complex and interesting, especially the protagonist Solina, who manages to be fallible and vulnerable but also a total badass. She doesn't fit into to the easy character tropes that most protagonists do. There is romance of a sort but nothing that resolves in this book. I love that so much emphasis is placed on the relationships between the female characters rather than the romance with the males, something that too few books do. In that way the book manages to do homage to the urban fantasy/paranormal romance genre but also continually subvert it with unexpected twists, excellent characterization, and spot-on writing. I love that it ends on a cliffhanger and can't wait for the next one! I will definitely be picking it up!

This was a wild ride into Norse mythology and some great characterisation. Solina, the main character evolves wonderfully throughout the novel as she learns her new powers, strength and weaknesses. However. It leaves us poor readers on the edge...dying for the next volume in this saga. Roll on July when we readers will hopefully be as entranced by the new book as much as this

Really must stop buying books that are part of a series not yet finished...lol. I am not a very patient type.
That said, I will absolutely buy the next book. I found this well written, even if the lead seemed able to swallow a complete turn around of her personal world view, in just under two weeks. This is fiction, after all. I rolled with it, because I enjoyed the plot.
Recommended for anyone who can let themselves enjoy a good story.

I started this novel with trepidation- will this debut fantasy challenge our imaginations or our credulity? The more I read, the more I wanted to read. Karissa Laurel creates a mythology within our own and Gods walk and fight alongside man. Her protagonist isn't static, her strength and our interest in her future grows throughout the novel. The author's ability to develop classic themes without falling into predictability promises for a (hopefully) exciting sequel.
