Starting Monday it will illegal to idle your car for more than five minutes during a one-hour period in Vermont.On the WPTZ App? Violators will receive a $10 ticket for the first offense, $50 for the second and $100 for the third.There are exceptions. Police, fire and other emergency vehicles do not have to adhere to the rule. Also, commercial buses, like those run by the Chittenden County Transportation Authority, can idle for as long as they want when passengers are on board.Drivers can also idle their cars for an extended amount of time in the winter to adequately defrost their windshields. Contractors can also keep their cars running if they are providing power.Idling for more than three minutes has already been rendered illegal in Burlington.
